(Takes sharp intake of breath at Car Dodgers Andy Gray impression..) (only joking)

Cinders see how you feel re the 10 miler, but don't do it if you are poorly. Its a shame, 10-mile races are the best, a bit ove rthe 10k, but not a full Half.

er..thanks Water Vole, i could have had a very quick exit if that type of rumour got around. Absolutely i am in no way like Andy Gray...i would have mentioned her bottom. Nope ive done it again! Seriously though, im kidding of course and i think maybe that conversation should end there as i dont want to get into trouble. image

I've decided that I'll be trying out my Run Keeper pro LIVE tonight. Which means anyone can log onto my home page and keep track of my movements (I like to call it the Stalker app)

I'll start my run at around 7.15pm, so feel free to log on. I'm hoping that by posting this it will inspire me  to run well

That looks a neat app Wizzy.  I might have more of a look at it later.

How far are you running tonight?

    Hi everyone!
I've just joined today image after a friend recommended this site.
I've just signed up for a 5k event in six months time as the incentive to get back into running. The beginners training schedule has given me hope in being able to at least jog the course if not even run part of it image
Any advice for this newbie will be gratefully received!

HI Lisa M, welcome to Cardodgers extended family

Well done on taking the plunge, that's a great way to make sure you stay focused and motivated. Only advice I would give is make sure you have some decent running shoes, share your successes (and failures) with others and if you don't know ASK. there are a lot of friendly and knowledgable people on this site, always willing to offer advice.

Cinders, I managed 7.4k last night, was aiming for 10k but it was too damn chilly. The head wind was really tough, it wasn't particularly strong but it was so cold.

Managed to knock my average pace down from 06:24 per km to 06:08 - while doing a slightly longer distance, so I am happy with that. That average pace includes a warm up walk and a cool down walk, so I am confident my average pace is 05:...... something, which means I might just be able to run a 10k in under an hour, which is one of my first goals

Anyway, enough from me, how is everyone else today?

    Hi Wizzy and Cinders
    Thanks for the welcome image
It's great to know that people are there for support and motivation.
Your run last night Wizzy sounds very impressive - and to a newbie like me, inspirational too image
I've visited a specialist running shop - very close by which is fab - and now own decent running shoes!! Yay!! The guy I saw recommended this site too image

Howdy Car Dodger! Hope you're well. According to Wizzy we're all family on this thread - isn't that good to know?! image

I'm a teeny bit jealous of those of you who are getting out tonight. Planning to attend my first parkrun tomorrow morning so tonight's a rest night.  Has anyone been to a parkrun events? I'm a teeny bit scared as have never done any type of group run before but I'm guessing that I can always take my ipod along to keep me company! Went to my first running club meeting this week too so am on a bit of a roll!

Wishing you all successful runs this weekend x

    Hey Nonnie!

I kinda liked the extended family comment as it goes..very warming!image

I really want to do a park run but work mostly stops me image but i will get to one soon enough.

I dont think you have anything to worry about, from what i here they are very welcoming to beginner's.

Just like anywhere you go and meet people you will find all sorts of personalities and guaranty that someone will help you out/feel welcome..the other's? Well how do you normally deal with them? It will be great!image

    Soooo jealous

Afternoon CD, missed you all day ha ha image

Nonnie, best check first in case parkrun don't allow ipods, more and more events are going the way of banning them.

Small run later on the treadie for me image

Welcome Lisa M2 and well done for achieving the first steps to being a runner - good trainers, achievable goal and plenty of enthusiasm! It's hard to give advice as we're all a bit different in terms of what motivates us, but I'll let you into a few of my secret incentives:

    • Recording physical activity on a website such as 'map your run' - great for tracking progress too
    • A great selection of tunes to keep you happy on your run and spur you on.
    • Running with company - you can help each other through those moments you just want to give up!
    • Putting runs into your diary. Yes I actually do this now!
    • Signing up to running newsletters - for me these offer a subtle reminder in your inbox to get back into running if you've had a few days/weeks off.
    • Buying new running gear. If it's expensive, think about this in terms of cost/run and this will help you to get out more. Also part of being a runner is getting into the mindset and looking like one!

5K in six months is definitely achievable. In fact, if you stick with gradually increasing your runs you'll probably find you are running 5k well before then. Good luck and keep us posted!! image

Fetch is also a good site to log miles/races etc.

Oh yes CD, another digging date would be nice image  Have you been digging today?  Good luck with the run later.

I liked it too - very proud of my new running family and what we have so far achieved.

Oh, thanks for the heads up. I've only got a wee shuffle so easy to carry it in pocket. I'm not averse to chatting to strangers but might be good to have the iPod if I'm feeling a bit awkward alone.

I've PM'd you! Actually, does anyone have any advice for setting up a running club? My local one is a twenty minute drive away so not ideal.

I seem to keep getting in the way of the Cinders-CD convo. Sorry guys! Oops I am probably doing it again. Does this make me the annoying little sis? image

Might take a look at Fetch, though already have two years of data on Map My Run so probably best to stick with that.

Nonnie-Im proud of it too! I think we all get along just fine!image

I defo need a new running group too..been looking for a running partner to push each other along but its much harder than i thought although i was told by someone on here that going to your local club is a good way to form a smaller group of people nearer to where you live? Infact that was exactly what he did and now runs in a group of 3!image
