Speedo Q&A 2: Improving your Open Water times

Hi Sean

I'm doing my first open water swim tomorrow in Liverpool Albert Dock under BLDSA rules (So no wetsuit).  I'm a little concerned about cramps as i tend to start suffering when i'm tired especially in my calves. 

Any pre race tips that could help??

Hi Kleptomania,

THe best way to get over the fear is just to jump in and give it a go. Practice makes perfect!

You will feel more comfortable when you stick to this technique- the most important thing is to make sure you are swimming straight and reaching the end destination as efficiently as possible instead of battling it out in the middle of the pack.

Stretching beforehand may help you with those cramps. If this is a persistent problem you may wish to seek professional advice.
