House of the Rising Plod

Morning All

Feeling a fraud again today as didn't actually plod. Legs were very sore so I just did some very light weights at the gym instead of my planned speed session.

Plodding to work tomorrow though (7 Miles) so the rest will probably do me good.

It's a lovely day for a plod though.

    Morning all.

Did my first personal training session. Found that I can actually jog at 8.5 km/hr easily, without running out of breath. The trainer was impressed with my cardiovascular fitness, but said he wanted to concentrate on my stomach, thighs and bum a bit more. That was when he brought out the gym balls and gave me heavier weights than usual. I never thought I would feel this much like lead after 30 mins exercise, but by the time he finished with my thighs and hips, walking became a bit of a problem.

I guess it's all for me own good, so I'm going back for some more punishment Fri, Sat and Sun. I'm going to get my dream body and the journey starts here!!!

Thank you for starting the thread floosie!

I played badminton last night, but I am going to leave work early and go for a run tonight, before going to the pub to watch Wales.

    Struggling to keep awake though...........

    Morning all,

Had first plod for a week last night - was great, although it felt fairly foreign to begin with. Did a 3 miler (ish) and took the opportunity to do a bit of exploring while I was out, which involved going up a h*ll (baby steps) past the Terry's factory (mmm, nice smell), through Rowntree's park (are you getting the chocolate link here!) which was part of the 5k race route I did the other day (do you know that even though we did 2 laps in the race I was so concentrating on just getting round that I couldn't figure out the route we'd taken!). Then did the rest of my usual route to finish. Felt great and didn't even think about stopping. Did have annoying numb left foot and blister on right foot (AGAIN!) but ankle felt ok (not great but ok).

Well done TG on your personal training session, I did a really good session in the gym a couple fo days before last weeks race and could barely walk for a day let alone race.

Maybe you can guys can help me with something. I don't plod much becasue I have a very bad back but I'm ok to plod so long as it doesn't hurt. Would different shoes help? Mine are a basic reebok model but I've only done about 150 miles in them(I did start this thread on the gear forum but no-one responded so I thought I'd try out on this line)

Morning puff. I was advised to go to a specialist running shop to get a proper pair of running shoes, definately helped. you can tell me to mind my own but do you swim? I foundthis helped my back when i put it out - which is rather frequent given my job.

I used to swim but now the nearest pool is about 10 miles in the wrong direction. Gutted about that as that was my favorite sport. Running was what i took up as a substitute (and it tends to be cheaper). Reckon I'm going to check out some new shoes on Saturday (New Balance are coming to a store nearby so maybe I can bag some freebies too)

Puff, have you tried pilates or yoga? A friend of mine has a bad back and nothing helped until she took up yoga. I also agree with Yllana, get proper running shoes from a specialist shop. Also make sure you change your shoes regularly.

Better provide my plodding update - did 5 miles at the gym while watching Holby City last night, always find that is a great distraction from the pain/boredom of a treadmill! Slightly sore knees today but I am ignoring them as I am joining a running club tonight - scary!

    Morning.

Puff - Maybe try one of those running shops that do a footscan to check you don't need any special type of shoes ?

First plod scheduled in for tonight since the 10k last Sunday.
Also saw the physio this morning re. my knee. Had been feeling better and he agreed that it seemed a lot better and should hopefully be cleared up in the next couple of weeks with the stretches etc so good news :)

Oh, and picked up the Marathon News the other day and the FLM application form is now sitting there staring at me as I try to decide whether I dare apply (although I know I probably wouldn't get a place anyway!)

10k is one thing, 26 miles is quite another !

I'm impressed you're all brave enough to join running clubs - let us all know if you think it improves your performance?

I don't think it's for me as i run because i can fit it in when i like without having to commit to trying to leave work on-time (which stresses me out) but i'd still be interested to know how the club thing goes for other plodders.

nessy, i work funny hours to - good old NHS. I plucked up the courage because i want to run further now, have sight set on 1/2 marathon next spring so i am really looking for guidance. Also because its nice to have some company occasionally. why not call your local one, doesn't mean you have to go every week. and you could meet someone who you can run with out of club times?

MarM how was the 10K. I'm looking to do one in late october/Novemeber, but since it will be my first i want to chose wisely any ideas?

I am hoping to pick up some training tips and advice as I don't really have a clue what I am doing! Also the club does track sessions with interval training which apparently is really good for you but I know I will never do that on my own.

Nessy, I asked on the forum for recommendations of local clubs - why don't you try that then you can find one that is friendly and unscary!

Morning all. Plodless day for me - have to work late. Also woke with awfully painful neck this morning - must have been lying squonky in bed.

Going to running club for second time tomorrow night so will probably have to plod up some hills, as there are very few flat bits in the local town.

TG - great pic. You are looking fab.

Pink - Terry's? Rowntree? Are you down the A1 in York, then?

  • Options
Puff - definately get your running style checked out either at a podiatrist or a specialist running shop. It's worth the time and the extra few quid it may cost you for a session with a podiatrist.

MarkM - get that application form filled in and sent off!

There is also a web site nessy that can potentially hook you up with people in your area. I can't remember what its called hough. something monkey i think. There is also the women running clubs, they are up and down the country - actually mainkly in the north. Try looking through a search engine.

    Still wracking my brains!!!

Jill, yep live just 5 min walk from the river by Millenium Bridge, has been a great place to start plodding as its so pretty - don't think I would have got this far if I'd been plodding the streets. Great place to plod definitely recommend it if you're ever in town.

Am moving to Brighton at the end of next month so will need to suss out a new route. Obviously theres the sea front so thats a good place to start, and the South Downs not far. Will check out the Jog Shop as they organise a load of events (inc 'Jog shop jog' which is a terrifying 1/2 or full marathon with tonnes of hills - guess thats about 5 years away!!). Hopefully they'll know some good routes and have a running club which might be worth a go. Don't really know if I'm up for being pushed to plod faster/further as I think I might end up saying 'screw you' and give up as the only reason that I've got this far is because I want to do it for me which means I'm far less likely to bail out.

Would be interested to know what people think of the running clubs - keep us posted.

Pink, a friend of mine is a member of a running club in Brighton, I think it is the one affiliated to the Jog Shop and seems to be really good and very sociable. I have been out drinking with some of the members and they are great fun!

Pink - there's a branch of the Womens Running Network in Brighton. Organiser is Alix Mercer-Rees, phone no. 01273 779520.

It's something like £12 per year and then £2 subs per week, I think, and it's a recognised affiliated group (nearly wrote grope then - oops)

Pink - after a shaky start with my club (turning up for the first time on the night they had a 5 mile handicap on was not a good move on my part) things have improved. I go out with them on a Sunday morning and you can do an hour or an hour and a half. They are a jolly bunch and very supportive and chatty. They don't push you if you're not up to it and always cheer me in when I bring up the rear! Having said that, I haven't been out with them for a couple of weeks because I've been going out early to beat the heat!

Thanks puff - it was the women running network i ws thinking of!

    Doh!!

Only knew about it cos I looked at being a local organiser for my area. Hubby reckoned it was too much like hard work for me though (translation - less chance of him getting a cooked tea)

Thanks all about club advice - still not sure if it's for me but it might be a way round the safety issue when the nights draw in.

Yllana - think you were thinking of www.badlytrainedmonkey.com - i just found it on an other thread and am off to look around now...

Thanks guys, will get in touch with the running clubs when I move, it'll be a good way to meet new people. I reckon I'll give it a go, like you say you don't need to go every week. Am down for a visit next week so might pop into the job shop while I'm there. Will check out badlytrainedmonkey too just cos its got a silly name!!

Yllana - Reebok Brighton 10k in November might be a good first one (if anywhere near you) as apparantly it is completely flat !

Sunday was my 2nd 10k. Did the London one a couple of months back after training for about 12 weeks and only doing a max. of 4 miles - finished in 1 hour.
This Sunday was the Tunbridge Wells 10k and it was v. tough as it was very hilly with the last 2k uphill all the way. Finished in 1.04 though so happy :)

If you can run for half hour, then I think you should be able to complete a 10k. The last person on Sunday came in about 1.32, so there are people even slower than me at these races
