I think the "out of control dogs" thing has been done to death now (on earlier thread). Why not leave this thread as one where people who have dogs can give advice to someone seeking advice about getting one?
Ironwolf: my dogs called Oz too! well Ozwald if he's naughty, ozzels, ozwas on a good day! the other's called charlie or charlie chan or channy or chanman or 'cc' collectively they are the biddy boyz! or pickles or pickle pockels, spickles...
I was bitten quite badly(read savaged) as a youngster, but I still love dogs to bits. Unfortunately, I have been shot by a 'fellow human being'(previous employment had certain risks), but this doesn't mean I should be scared by every person I meet!! Says it all really.
Hounds were built for covering distances(apart from dachshound of course!), and are relatively obedient. Quite impressed by a neighbours' Dalmation whilst out running, but they can be a bit 'dizzy'. Otherwise, Lurchers/Greyhounds are great if you break them into the distance work gently.
I wouldn't recommend a bassett hound for running!!!!!! unless its got a scateboard, but then it would probably get it ears caught in the wheels. A Saint Bernard, then if you get tired you can have a swig of whatever's in its barrel or ride it home!!
Old neighbour had a wee (Cavalier)King Charles Spaniel, after about 2 miles I had to stick him inside my jacket and carry him (the dog that is!!). Cute as hell, but not a real dog......he used to look at his reflection in the puddles...
Suppose you could use a King Charles as cross training... run a mile and then run the other 7 with it on my back in a rucksack with it's head pocking out!!
He hadn't yet had the snip, so you wouldn't want him on your back!!! Because he was so cute, he would attract the females for a cuddle, and that's a benefit for me!!
Dalmations bred as guard dogs in olden times, to protect the Mail post etc. They are also supposed to have a natural affinity with horses, so horses trust them at close quarters. Very long lopping strides.
I believe dalmations were something to do with keeping the horses in check. Also used to clear the roads of people when they had horse drawn fire engines.
The only problem with Dalmations is keeping them clean...Fens have now adopted the thick-black-mudpack consistancy. How about a pure black Dalmation, that'd do me.
Soop - our Oz is named after the Jimmy Nail character in the TV series Auf Wiedersehen Pet, because as a pup he was large and gangly. But the resemblance stops there, he's beautiful now. My pic shows him at 12 weeks old (on the left), he's now 19 months and fully grown, 66cms at the shoulder. Kids here of course always think he's named after Ozzy Osbourne!
IUTBF - thanks, we think so. White Shepherds are not as common as German Shepherds, and in fact since official recognition internationally as a separate breed are called Berger Blanc Suisse, or Swiss White Shpeherds. Most German Shepherd owners look down on them, because they are softer in temperament, personally I think that's a bonus.
Hips - Shani has had two knee ops; she now has nylon tendons in her both knees and a plastic meniscus in the right! Both caused by footballer-type injuries - pivoting too quickly and ripping the tendon.
Just a minor point, Mak as a labrador-cross has fairly coarse straight hair. Meanwhile Spice as a Springer has fluffy hair.
Result is Mak dries of quickly and needs a brief brushing to get the worst mud off. But Spice needs a shower, shampoo and brushing, and still seems muddy.
It is sad, but Mak has his own web page! Mak's page
Mak's friend - you can see Oz and Shani as they really look by logging on to www.ogmaxdorfumgebung.privat.t-online.de, and clicking on Unser Hunde. You will find them under their 'real' names, Oz is Boy-Bilbo of White Flame. Shani is Arabella White Lady von Schloss Felsberg.
Actually its quite strange but quite a large number of my running friends have dogs, and they all seem to be well adjusted (the dog that is), don't eat people and seem to think that we are all part of an extened family when we go out together. I suppose its part of a pack hunting instinct.
I think so too. Guess you just have to be a dog person and understand the pack mentality. When our two play together, non-doggy folks think they are having a real fight!
my mums got 2 bordercollies and she goes cycling with them for about 10 miles a couple of times a week and they love it!
they get left in the house during the day coz my mum and dad both work, but my mum just leaves a fue chews and some toys for them to play with and leaves them in the kitchen ( whare theres nothing they can destroy) and there fine. when they get let out in the afternoon they run up and down the fence chasing the farmer as he goes by on his wee quad bike into the field.
they are full of energy, but only when there outside. theyre perfectly quiet and behaved indoors.
iv grown up with lots of bordercollies and i thinik there exallent pets, but you have to keep them ocupied with diffrent activities. my mum does agility and flyball with them aswell as taking them for daily hour or more walks, and the cycling.
now iv got a st bernard and i go jogging with her everyday. shes great, but i only go for 30min coz i just started. shes only 10 months just now aswell and i wouldnt like to do much more than that with her coz shes such a big dog i dont want to put extra strain on her joints. but she could rome all day at a slow plod when we go walks into the mountains with her. she can go for longer than i can!

I can understand why standard races don't take dogs - they do tend to run in circles and pull across in front of you when you least expect it!
Have fun!
