hardest bike course for halves

on another forum someone has asked if the titan tri that we did last saturday was the highest bike ascent of the lot.

i didn't think it was that bad but at looking it had 4674ft of ascent

i checked a few others

Bala  3800
Wimbleball    3080
Immortal   3100

so it seems to have been quite high even though there was only 1344ft for the run

anyone have any others that can throw into the mix

  • looks like the brutal half has 4966 ft over the two laps.......with a name like Brutal .,i would expect a high figure

Ridgeback Max did a tough one recently somewhere I believe

  • Depends if you find climbing hard doesn't it?...i prefer climbing to flat courses as i'm better at the up parts.

  • I used to hate hills but BattieHattie my new training partner this year seems to love them and so we have been seeking them out.......

so I think I am finally getting better at them.image..........which will no doubt be really useful for outlaw and my races in lincolnshire this summerimage

  • cotswolds half has 354 ft elevation.........which is probably how there was so much drafting going on.....no hills to split the groups

  • Wassdale is supposed to be a touch hilly, no idea on numbers though

  • 6854 ft Symes..now that does sound like a few good hills in that......image

Are you calling yourself a grimpeur?image

  • I actually prefer steep sharp climbs to the long smooth ones.i can maintain the power for a short time.........

When you are carrying a bit of weight the flatter courses seem to be more suitable as once you are up to a speed its easier to maintain it

I've got the climbing ability of Quintana, the engine of Voigt, the sprint of Sagan and the good looks of Kittel..........so more of a domestique to be honest.

  • A Day in the Lakes had 4200 ft of ascent on the bike according to Mr Garmin

Another 2000 ft on the fell run...

  • 3873 according to the website......... looks a few tough ones.the fell run sounds hard work.image

  • My Garmin reckons the Hever half was 1393m of climbing which Google says is 4570 ft. That hurt. A lot.

  • If it's climbing you want won't Alp de Huez tri score highly ?

  • Yep, Titan had 1,450m of climbing, more ascent than it felt on the day. Enjoyed it, but them I'm a glutton for punishment and prefer 'harder' races to 'easier'.
  • Little Woody is quite lumpy

as was Eastnor Castle Middle Distance
  • according to mapmy ride the little woody is only  4727 ft......i

  • 'Only', that's still quite a bit. I'll let you know how it feels in August
  • Wasdale has to be the toughest. Going over Hardnott pass 30% and Rynose pass 25% twice each. 7217 ft of climbing. The swim is in the deepest (and coldest) lake in the Lake District and then the run is up Scarfell and Scarfell Pike.

It claims to be the hardest half ironman in the world. Anyone fancy it? I'll go.....but only to support.

Hardknott twice !   Not one to do on a tri bike then - I can't imagine many people descending that on a tri bike let alone climbing it.   Almost tempting to go up just to watch.

  • I've done Hardknott twice in my life and the mention of it brings back memories of pain and suffering. On the route you do both passes from each direction. Rynose East to West is also a nightmare!

  • I'll take that challenge I can climb anything in under 6 monthsimage

  • Might take you up on that KK. Can I use my mates electric bike?

It would have to be Great Dunn Fell. 7.4km averaging 8% and climbing a total of 625m. View at the top is worth it, pubs near the bottom even more worth it!

  • Great Dunn Fell Sportive 3rd May? 63 miles with the finish line at the top of the climb!image

Bet I can chick you guys on any single bike climb that you choose. If you would like to take that challenge then there's a pint or 2 in it. Just climbing, I'm crap at descent.

You couldn't - you could beat me in a running race though.
