So i have pulled a muscle in my back from my run on Sunday, it still hasnt healed up, it is nothing major but i am going to miss a 5km easy run tonight and probably my sprint reps tomorrow. Hopefully i will be ok for thursday to get these runs in on Thursday and Friday, rest Saturday and 16km on Sunday.

I will try to get a pic of the road signs for you all, when i walk past one at work image

Good luck with that back jj.

Today I noticed that there's a change in the placing of timing mats (I think) compared to last year.  Last year, we got split times at 10K, 10m, 13.1m, & 20m but this year, the booklet says they're at 10K, 13.1m, & 30K.    I only noticed because I was working out my predicted times at the timing mats (well, what else is there to do during the taper?

There is, of course, the change in the route at the finish (slightly less uphill)... and the race village move.  Anything else notable changed?

  • Options

North Ender disappointing if there is no mat at 20 miles, I had a storming 38:18 final 10k split in 2013.

Anyone else on beetroot juice ? almost done my 1st litre

    30k is not so different...

NorthEnder: an uphill finish? I thought this marathon was pancake flat - the cheating lying so and sos!

  • Options

I guess the move to 30k is because timers didn't like being out in the desolate waste lands , it was a welcome sight seeing people at 20 miles

  • Options
Awc heh heh. Why are we drinking beetroot juice?
  • Options

Beetroot juice improves oxygen uptake, lowers blood pressure makes your pee pink , and tastes disgusting so it must be good, various trials show it is so good it should be banned

  • Options
Hmmm not sure my BP should be any lower. Nurses already ask me if I'm dead whenever they take it!! I bet it tastes disGUSting.

NE-What's this uphill finish you speaking of? Not what I signed up for!!image

Was thinking of having some beetroot juice last night but opted for red wine instead-much better for you surely?image

Some wise words there Orapidrun! That should be a great confidence booster for you!

JJ - take it easy, don't try to push too much at this stage and pics would be appreciated!

I don't fancy the betroot juice myself. I am currently on the Maca powder/Matcha green tea powder and flaxseed powder all thrown into my Nutribullet morning smoothies as the paranoia of trying to stay healthy starts to kick in!!

The red wine seems like a much better option Tom!

PS - I looked at the weather yesterday, couldn't help myself!

I've been lurking on here for a while but posting in the Gingermagic thread. Just thought i'd pipe up to add my goal as I'm running Manchester too. I'm committed to it now!

I know it looks ambitious given my PB but i have only done one prior marathon (London 2014) where i injured my knee about 14.5 miles in, at which point i was on target for sub 4, so jogged/walked to the finish.

Sub 3:30 is definitely achievable (I ran 1:34 through the wind at Wokingham HM in Feb) but manflu ruined my peak mileage weeks so i'm a bit short on long runs and maybe undercooked endurance wise. Only one way to see!

Good luck to all running and commiserations for those who've had to pull out through injury. That sucks but its probably a more sensible move than putting yourself on the injury bench for longer through running.

Welcome RichN. Running 1:34 at windy Wokingham would indicate that sub 3:30 is well within reach if the endurance holds out.image

That picture makes it all very real JJ - I have to say though that I'm feeling a lot more relaxed 2nd time round. Last autumn was my first marathon and I was so nervous and worried at this stage. Much more enjoyable this time not having to worry so much.

I've got 7 miles laster with 8x100m and then 8 miles tomorrow which includes 3x1,600m intervals. And that's the last big session before race day!

    Hi All

Not posted on these threads for an absolute age. Avid reading though if I may say. I'm really looking forward to Manchester, it will be my second marathon and I'm also aiming big.

I did Paris last year had a massive hypo (I'm a type I diabetic) and the time simply drained away in the last 10k I finished in 4:26.

At Manchester I'm aiming for sub 3:30, seems far fetched but in the last 6 weeks I've recorded the following PBs - 5k 20:19, 10k 41:37, HM 93:22, 30k 2:24:02.

To all you specialists out there (now I've sorted the diabetes issues, as much as one possibly can) do you think my time is a realistic goal afterall we are talking about taking virtually an hour off my 2015 marathon time???

Welcome Iain-Your HM/30k times indicate that sub 3:30 is well within reach particularly now you have the diabetes issues sorted. No need to think about what happened in 2015-won't have any impact on what happens next Sunday!

Thanks Tom, my marathon finishing time is the only goal I missed last year, so here's to a fab Manchester Marathon.

I'm sure we are all going to have a great time, as Paris had so many runners last year I'm looking forward to having some space to run from the gun this time round.

Are there going to be staggered starts depending on which pen you start in?

RichN/Iain-I'm probably not the best person for giving out advice having never run a marathon before so hopefully some more experienced folk will back me up with my positive thoughts on your targets.

Iain: I ran (a very hilly) Bristol + Bath Marathon in October in 3:30 off the back of a 1:36 HM PB (I also ran a HM 6 weeks before the marathon and did it in 1:38). If you look at something like McMillan Race Predictor a 1:33 HM would indicate that 3:30 is well within reach. If you've done the long runs then I don't see why not.

There will be staggered starts depending on what time you put on your application form

Rich: I would think similar to Iain as 1:34 HM has you in great shape for a 3:30 marathon if you've got the long run miles in the bank. The pacing is no issue its just a question of endurance.

Thanks AWC, in my training I've done 6, 20 miles runs since 1st Jan (one of them was a 22 miler, did that one in an average of 7:59/miles), so I think I've got plenty of long run miles in the bank.

    Roll on Manchester!!!

Hi, thanks for the best wishes. Gutted to be missing out as it really is a great marathon. Thanks for suggesting Edinburgh but it's sold out so maybe look towards autumn and maybe loch Ness.

Keep sane during the taper, lots of water intake and enjoy, the hard work is done.

Linking forward to hearing all about your pbs.

Blimey Iain if you ran 22 miles at 7:59/mi then you are nailed on for at least 3:30. My target is 3:10ish (7:15/mi) and my 22/23 mile runs are all around the 8:10/mi mark. I ran that 3:30 marathon off the back of 8:50/mi long runs. Your long runs should be c10-15% slower than target race pace so I'd be very surprised if you didn't go sub 3:30 - at least you can set of confidently at 8:00/mi and push on later in the race if things feel good

My target is slightly conservative, as its my first marathon I want to just get around without any drama!! I think I may be able to pull it in a bit faster on the day, but if i get around in under 3:30 I will be delighted and live to die another day.

Just a word of warning, be careful what you eat from the goody bag afterwards, when you are deliriously tired and hungry
