Road, all that stuff about getting covered in crap and whacked in the face by branches is what I'd hate about mtbs. Much prefer getting some miles in on a hot day, smooth tarmac and cafe stops.
Pops "smooth tarmac and cafe stops." maybe in a few years it'll appeal but for the mo there's still a few years left of the ruff stuff. I'll do the L-Brighton and stuff but not roads usually.
Andrew, I am ex-BMX'er (probably explains the resistance to roads and racers), used to race in its hey-day (1983). Great sport and would love to be able to do the tricks that Hoffman et al can do these days. Last stunt I did at age 28 was trying to ride down 4 flights of stairs on a BMX and face planting the wall, with my nuts ending up in the stem. Excellent sport. At 34, I'll take tricks with some bounce thanks.
in a cafe the other day wearing my mtb spd shoes which i had worn for a road ride in peaks. Got funny looks from a load of mtb ers who couldn't undestand why i was wearing the gear but wasn't dirty. Curiousity got the boeeter of em in the end and one of em was pushed forward to ask- lol
so Andrea when asked, Did you come clean and admit to being partial to a bit of roadie, or did you just say you had finished a rip-roaring section of singletrack (to save face) and got so dirrrrty that you had to get cleaned up?
Alpine desecents - not much fun at all. At best, bloody scary and painfull on the fingers with all that braking on narrow twisty roads which are usually very gravelly from the lasst downpour (unless you're on Le tour day and the road's been swept!).
I thought the idea was that you didn´t brake...? To scary for me, after I come down a pass you could fry an egg on my rims and I usually need another set of brake blocks!
Oh crikey, I brake, I brake lots. In fact my paws are welded to the brakes and I´m bolt upright in the saddle for ultimate wind resistance, usually with clothes flapping as well for that parachute effect. Mr B claims not to brake, but he´s usually too far ahead for me to see, and anyway, I don´t want to watch, ´specially when he starts overtaking those lorries and tourist coaches...
i tried to buy a TiPhoon but they didn't have one in my size (and i'm 6 foot 1 so hardly unusual) anywhere in the world - i think they don't exist and they just made the bike up to look big and clever

Cleats are OK on the road, and maybe for a bit of XC, but not for bumps and jumps. They are good but I'd still be nervous about them on downhill.
Plus the hardcore roadie SPD shoes with curled up toes (where you sound like a horse when you are walking) look a bit naff, dont they?

I went to this place which was so scenic and surreal taking out the same places you ski on a bike.
