The womens race showed that the marathon is perhaps the least predictable event in the Olympic athletics programme. I expect the medallists will be African and Oriental. Any one from Europe or of European ancestry is unlikely to figure at the end.

Not worth predicting, they will have nothing to do with the medals and they are not in the same leage as the Japanese, Italians, Spaniards, East Africans, Marroceans and South Africans.

Not so sure about Tergat, though he has been training very hard back in Kenya. Julio Rey (doping history!!!!) is a very aggressive runner, Jose Rios, Gharib the world champ, Gert Thys, the Japanese have a very strong team, maybe the Brasilians Lima or Silva can handle the conditions well.

I like Gharib for championship pedigree, but it's too open to call anyone a genuine favourite. Tergat for sentimental reasons having lost so many great championship races to Haile would make a great champ, but as we were reminded last Sunday, no one deserves the Olympic title, it has to be won.

Agree with Dodge - O'Dowd, Brown and Robinson to push the pace at the front to try and blow the Africans off the back of the lead group.

Isn't it possible that Brown might be able to stick with the front guys? I've not seen him run for a long time, but I do remember him sticking with them in FLM once. A long while ago agreed, but who knows!

Jon Brown hasn't done much since Sidney due to injury but he was 4th there. It said in the paper yesterday that he's good with heat and hills and the weather in Athens does seem to be a little cooler so let's hope for the best.
