When I was at school antidisestablishmentarianism was the longest word in the dictionary. It isnt anymore because people are employed to make up longer ones, however if it still was the longest word you wouldn't be able to use it in scrabble coz you wouldn't have enough letters and the board isn't big enough.

Much smaller words however are often used to great effect
