Good point Benz. I've run Race for Life for the past 4 years and cos I hate asking for money from people I always end up sending a cheque off from me! I couldn't guarantee to raise such sums and then sub it from my own pocket.

well race for life is an event
Most people give a pound otr two, and it doesnt matter how much you raise
Same for GNR, so i dont brgrudge raising the dosh, cos i know it will be appreciated however much

I've done a Charity Trek in the past and raised 5,000pounds with a friend. We learnt alot from that experience - honestly, you really can raise almost 1,000 with one big popular event eg a Beer Festival with band. Roping in a few friends(I don't have that many, and certainly no rich ones!!)to help organise isn't that impossible if you promise them free beers on the night! Whatever, one big event is so much easier than asking for sponsorship and gets you alot closer to target. I'm doing this 'cos I'd decided pre ballot that I was doing London THIS YEAR come what may, its my 40th, and my way of celebrating life and putting something back. I know it will be hard work to fundraise as well, but I'd advise strike while iron is hot and get in before anyone else in the area does! My sponsor form is now booked in at my gym for display from January as I am first to ask! GO FOR IT!

Anyone that does not get in might like to think about BERLIN: I live there and can really reccomend the race.33.000 runners and a good flat coure.The day before has a breakfast run with about 10,000 runners taking part.Berlin is easy to get to only an hour and half from London Stansted and if you fly Buzz or Air Berlin really cheap.Anyone thinking about it should let me know and I could help with hotels.

Berlin 2003 is on the 28th September.If you get your entry in early places are guarenteed, also it is a first come first served basis and you can also register on line.This year all places were gone at the end of July.If you dont fancy running you can skate the course but there are only 8,000 places fot that ( starts about 30 mins before the runners and no we dont catch the tail enders )This year saw over 25,000 runners finish and the atmosphere although not matching London is still really good.
Twinkletoes.... the beer is reasonably priced and compared to british beer tastes good as well ( OUCH!!!!!)

Tks Stephen! I don't like British beer anyway - Heineken Export is my preferred tipple and has eased many a cramped hamstring in the past!

AAAAGGGH, I am getting so fustrated!!!

Been following all these threads, people saying "YES I've got in" or "NOOOOO", and I'm still waiting. Be glad to know either way so I can book a different marathon if I receive a fleece in the post, maybe the Connemarathon.

Post turned up this morn, lot's of envelopes but none from FLM. Just have to be patient and wait.

I'm definately not in . . . and celebrated (ahem) by staying in bed and refusing to go out for run, even though I gave in and went out at lunchtime when it stopped piddling it down. I've consoled myself by entering the London half instead (running round Silverstone looks fun, tho. I'd rather do it on a motorbike!) and I'm determined to run Berlin.

Stephen--what sorts of folks skate Berlin? Are they all speed skaters, or just ordinary rec skaters?

Congrats to all that are in! And good luck to those who haven't heard yet! Anyway, now that its' real - wonder if anyone can advise me re training as I guess had better get on with it now that its' real!! I've looked at RW plans on this site - the Intermediate seems too high a start point for me, and I can't fit in 6 runs p/wk, but the "get you round" beginner programme too low a level. Anyone know of a decent programme inbetween these two? Say 4/5 sessions p/wk or so. Did my first half marathon in October 1:58:40 and my pb 10k is 53:12, so I'm not fast but lots of stamina to keep plodding on!! Love to hear from anyone in the know!!

Yep - there's a really good training guide on the NY marathon site at http://www.nycmarathon.org. It's under 'Athletes & Training' and gives a number of programs - they're all pretty good - realistic, that is - I followed the intermediate one and shaved half an hour off my time. Alex Popplewell (see the NY marathon thread on URWFRC) raves about Hal Higdon but I think that the website one takes some beating. I've got to find a different training route as I'm bored with the one I did for NY - but Shrewsbury, where I live, is small town and it's hard to find a way to run round it without repeating same old ground. A nice problem to have, I suppose!!
