Well done, everyone - so many great results and good to see so many of you achieve your targets.

Well, I stood at the start line thinking that, having recovered from a cartilage tear last August and losing nearly 3 weeks' training (resulting in a less than average 35 miles per week overall) at the most crucial period, I should be just happy to be fit and running, rather than shooting for a sub-3:15 or 3:30, each of which would've been a huge PB.

Started well and reached 15 miles feeling great and well on for a sub-3:30. Between 15 and 16, my calf suddenly decided to twinge and from that point on, I suffered severe cramp all the way to the finish and had to stop each mile to stretch. It was a case of every part of me had the energy to keep knocking out sub 8 m/m, but the right calf was having none of it! Despite having to stop on numerous occasions, I managed to hold 9 m/m and was still on for a PB until I reached the Embankment when just keeping going was a challenge in itself.

Reached the Mall and my calf decided it wasn't going anywhere. The first aid guys rushed to my aid, and a couple of guys who'd been encouraging me as I was hobbling beside them stopped and offered to carry me to the finish! I declined their kind offer though and somehow managed an improvised sprint to the line in 3:42:43.

So, to sum up, I'm frustrated that injury hindered me from getting my PB but I take comfort from the fact that I had bags of energy left at the end. In fact, I've never ended a marathon feeling so fresh and I know there's loads more to come.

Humph, it was great to see you in the pub afterwards and I'm thrilled that you've achieved a PB despite the cold. On reflection, I'm thinking that Halstead may not be such a good idea, but I was on my third glass of wine when I decided it was. Apart from tightness in the aforementioned calf, I feel fine today, with few aches and pains. I'll see how I feel towards the end of the week, and then decide...

Jules, well done - still a fantastic time. Here's hoping that we can both qualify for the Championship start next year!

Didn`t get 3:15 but my dodgy knee held together and I managed 3:22:58. What a great day, perfect weather and great support. Can`t wait til next year. Well done everybody.

    Hi all

Feel great today and have had my planned sports massage which should do the trick ! The marathon simply exceeded all my expectations ! I was confident that the training had gone okay but a little apprehensive that going for a 12 minute plus improvement was ambitious but then hell it was to be my last marathon after all !!

At the expo I was a little disappointed to find myself in pen 3 which was quickly rectified without hassle (thanks help desk at the expo) and got myself into pen 2 on blue start. The Saturday consisted of several goes on the carousel with my four year old, London Eye, Aquarium etc etc...

On the day the rain suited me down to the ground especially when compared to last year and the temps in London on Saturday which were much too hot for my liking! I positioned myself near to the 7 m/m pacer and thought I'd see how it went over the first few miles. I had grabbed a lucozade split time band (took 3 actually. Got rid of the sub 3:00 one as being a little too ambitious and also the sub 3:20 as not being testing enough, settled on sub 3:10 in the end) and set off aiming for sub 7:14 m/miles. Over the next thirteen miles my worst mile was 7:26 and I completed half way in 1:33:13 and felt well on track.

Intended to maintain the same pace and keep slowly building the buffer I had given myself. Last year I was dead on my feet over the last five miles or so, this year I was like Tigger bounding along and when I saw the family at mile 25 I was flying ! My worst mile split over the second half was 7:22 and I finished with a final 1.2 miles of 8:26 - 3:06:51 which as I still can't access the official site is as near as I can tell you. A PB by 20 mins 32 seconds and with five loo breaks tantalising close to the magic 3 hour mark !! Did I say this was to be my last –Mmmmmm we’ll see.....

5:21 in the end - way outside my goal when I satrted this thread, but I didn't know then that an injury was going to haunt me.

I surprised myself yesterday by how well I survived and kept going - hopefully in the coming year I'll be able to train well and get somewhere near to 3:15 in FLM07 :o)

Well done all, some splendid efforts. Commiserations to those of you who just missed out, take heart and keep trying {o:

I thought the loos (number of cubicles) on the green start were totally inadequate. I was stuck in the queue from 8:15 to 9:30 and had to get changed in the rain so as to get my bag on the trailer. A lot of the guys in the queue with me were furious - there are going to be a lot of FLM bound complaints.

I had a good day, half way in 93 mins, finished in 3:08.04. Still hanging on to my GFA status for dear life!

    Hi all
what a brilliant weekend and an unbelievable race.started from red start pen 2 and was chatting to some bloke called Steve from Reading i think, anyway we made a pact to run it together and try to stay with the 7m/m guy.First 3 miles with the pacer 1n 21mins so we pushed ahead to give us a bit of a cushion.Lurker then joined us for a short time(would have been nice if you Lurked around us til the finish)reached 6m in 40.44 then as we passed the Cutty Sark the RW pacer came flying past with about 20 people hanging onto his tail.We decided to leave him and continue with our own steady pace, and sure enough soon after we passed him then he`d put on another spurt and that was how the race continued.reached 13m marker in 1;27;35 and then my right ankle started to hurt. The pain didnt subside but the crowds were amazing, having my name printed on my vest was the best thing i could have done cos all the encouragement kept me going along with my running partner.17 miles in 1;54;23 and we`re both feeling the pace but keep talking to each otherand taking turns to go in front,my ankle hurts like hell and i can feel a blister that feels like an egg under my foot.We keep the pace going and we`ve steadily passed people the whole race when we reach 20 miles in 2;14;55 we knew a sub 3 was on the cards if we could hold it together. Now everything hurts but its only a 10k left, dig in,stay focussed and try to relax,a couple of 7 min miles and we pass 22m in 2;29;00,theres no way i`m letting this go now the next 2 miles are 6;52`s going through 24m in 2;42;45 i`m really fading and the legs are packing up as the next mile takes 7;22 the slowest mile of the marathon.800 metres to go and i give it one final push,i lose Steve but am just focussing on getting to the end then just like when i was finishing the Liverpool half with about 400m to go i hear my wife and daughter shouting me and i`m flying past people to the finish.I look round for Steve but can`t see him then look at my watch,2;58;36

i hung around for ages to thank Steve for the support but didnt see him.Collected my medal, got the photo taken then my body seized up and i felt really faint but a lovely young medic girl sat me down and sorted me out

great weekend and the Reds beat Chelski

    just perfick

OK, add 15 seconds to my time as well.

Brilliantly paced there Jakesy, and nicely tactical with a running partner. I find it ironic that at London it is so hard to achieve, simply because there are too many people to focus on.

    Hi folks

Got back today from London, finish time was ....... 3hrs 23mins

Bit disappointed that I didn't get under 3hrs 15mins but the wheels fell of at 22miles and the last 4 miles felt like 40 miles. Legs hurt a bit and I'm walking down the stairs slightly sideways but not bad, looks like I might lose the nail on my right foots little toe as it feels bruised today.

Met up with my running club afterwards and we went for a pint and a meal at the Sherlock Holmes pub, had fish n chips was great after all that pasta. They told me its a good result for a 1st so not feeling so bad, now looking for the second one to enter and have been told Abingdon is a good one for a sub 3:15 attempt as its flat and only a marathon (no combined half).

Well done everyone. Thanks for the reports as well - it's interesting reading everyone's experiences, and it's helped me to remember moments I had forgotten.

2:58:46 for me, and I'm still on cloud 9.

The night before, I dreamt that I had overslept, waking up in my hotel room to see start on the TV.

If this is another dream, I'm going to be really hacked off when I wake up.

    Splits:
    KM10: 0:42:27
    KM20: 1:24:51
    HALF: 1:29:25
    KM30: 2:07:02
    KM40: 2:49:27
    FINISH: 2:58:46

I felt comfortable until about 15 miles, worked until 20 miles, and words fail me to describe the last 6.2. I do however remember:

    i) Repeating the mantra "maintain the pace until the next mile marker, and THEN you can slow down"
ii) Like NL, I wore two pacebands - the 3:00 and the 3:10 (either of which I would have been pleased with) - symbolically discarding the 3:10 band at 24 miles helped refocus my frazzled mind
iii) There must have been a fault in the space-time continuum around Birdcage Walk which seemed to go on forever
iv) Being surrounded by a friendly wall of noise

The whole day passed so quickly (toilet queues at the start excepted), so I'm delighted to have a chance to experience it all over again next year.

Apologies for my online absence last week. We were on holiday in a part of the country where television is viewed with suspicion, chicken pox is rife (little 'un still suffering) and internet is where fish are caught.

Jakesy & Njord - fantastic achievement!

Here are my splits, just for a laugh ;-)

    KM10: 0:48:31

It all feels very easy indeed, but I know that, with the most crucial weeks of training lost, there's little chance of me sticking to 3:24 pace.

    KM20: 1:38:48

Sensibly, decide to put the breaks on a tad, but it's frustrating to be overtaken by so many runners when I've got to much energy.

    HALF: 1:44:18

    Still feeling great.

    KM30: 2:32:29

Calf starts to twinge just before the 15 mile mark - gets steadily worse and by 16 miles it's really painful. Stop to stretch between 16 and 17 for over a minute, at which point the first of the 8 m/m pacers passes. Gingerly start running again and almost immediately the second of the 8 m/m pacers 'sprints' past.

    KM40: 3:29:32

Oh dear, having to stop at least a couple of times every mile now, apart from 20-21 when I pull a 7:57 out of the bag, so I obviously avoided 'The Wall'.

    FINISH: 3:42:43

    OUCH!

As I'm feeling relatively pain-free now, I'm trying to think what caused the cramp. I suspect that it could do with the fact that I wore performance trainers - NB 901's - a shoe that I've only ever worn up to half-marathon distance before.

Jools, I'm also thinking of going for Cardiff, though if FLM lower the womens' GFA to sub 3:30 and I miss out on sub 3:15, it'll be too late to use the GFA for next year's FLM. Hmmm...

Are they thinking of changing the standard, then? And if so, what are they planning to change the Elite standard to - i.e. am I going to have to take maybe 22 mins off my time rather than 7???

Have entered Cardiff anyway, because I feel sure, given the disrupted build up I had, that I've got the potential to take some more time off my marathon time (quite apart from the fact it's slow relative to my half and 10 mile PBs). And, when I get back from holiday (off for 3 weeks in 4 weeks!) I'm joining a club, hoping that having someone to push me in speedwork sessions will help. Don't think I'm tough enough on myself and hate wearing hrm.
  • Options
    SusieBeeSusieBee ✭✭✭
There's a big debate on another thread about the relative unfairness of the women's GFA qualifying standard compared to that of the men, though the criteria is hardly the same - ie 18-39 year old men: sub-3, as opposed to 18-49 year old women: sub-3:45.

I'm sure there's loads more to come there then, Jools. I've done very little in the way of speed work too, but will work on lowering my 5k and 10k PBs during the coming weeks - currently 20:05 and 42:28.
  • Options
Does anyone know if FLM thinking of changing the women's GFA time? Saw another thread about how it seems to be unfair that women 'only' need to do 3:45 but men have to do 3:00. I was aiming for sub 3:30 on Sunday and am absolutely delighted to have done 3:23:58 so am gunning for sub 3:15 in Chicago in October to hopefully get a championship place for FLM 07.

Congrats to many and commiserations to others, some cracking running out there and supreme efforts. My 5th mara but first FLM and the longed-for GFA time finally in the can with room to spare - got through half in 1.31 but faded towards the end. I know there a quicker time in there somewhere - so see some of you (metaphorically) next year. Enjoy your running.

Just looked at your split times and compared them with mine and we were near each other for nearly 30k, when you went slightly ahead, then the wheels fell off my wagon.

Gives me a good idea where in the race it happened, just need to do the work to minimize the effect of the long distance on my muscles.

Brilliant times here. It brings a lump to my throat knowing that I was in this group and that some of you folks were in the area around me. I felt your presence!. Next year I will make more of an effort to do 3 things:-

    1. train harder
    2. write more in the thread
    3. meet the folks in the pub afterwards!
