Coro - Quality....very funny and very true.

MtR - Why did you go and have to spoil it all by reminding me I've still got to get a job in the end! Sorry to hear about you additional troubles by the way -hope it sorts itself out quickly

WTGY - I'm currently a UNIX systems administrator for Barclays but not for long!!  Hate IT now but will probably end up with some sort of contractor position after my career break as it's pretty much all I can do that brings in a sensible wage.

CJ - beat me to it!!
Unplanned  meet up with CJ meant I did 6 of his 10 miles. Will probably go out and do a few more slow ones later.
(I've got the day off by the way - using up my holiday before I get chucked out)

MtR - Impressive on two counts, one because you are a CE and also because you seem to be doing something that does some good in the world. I'm not sure I can claim the second one!

MtR - keep plugging away.  We can all train hard when we're flying.  It's the people who doggedly get their heads down and beat the blues and niggles get my admiration.

Marigold - good news on the job front!  Although are you good at managing your time?  I have 6 weeks off every summer and sometimes find it harder to structure my time than when I only have one set slot in the day in which to train, in which case I just get it done. When I have all day I tend to waste time on here (as does the OH pottering in the house!!).

WTGY - I am a teacher in a special school working with pupils with severe Autism.  I want to be a writer - currently 6000 words into a book about my Dad's life in the Desert Rats in WW2.

In my spare time I do things like this...

    2.5 w/u then

0.88m, break, 0.94, break, 1.00, break, 0.94, break.  Was meant to be 4 x 1500m but mathematical issues made the first one about 100m short, so I added it on to the 3rd one.

Average pace for each interval brought to you by Garmin were..

    5:25, 5:22, 5:19, 5:18.

And it was hard - can only think I've run as hard this year during the last 400m of the Poole 10k and the last 15 miles of the Paris Marathonimage

WTGY - My job title is Satellite Operations Support Group Manager – I manage a group which develops software/systems used for the monitoring and control of geostationary satellites + provide real-time support to the team who operates our constellation of 11 (as of last Monday night) satellites.

    Afternoon all.

Sorry to hear things still aren't right MtR.  Still 8 weeks to go til Abingdon.

Marigold - sounds like you'll be able to add in rest as well as good training for FLM 09

More mathematical issues here.  Meant to be 6 x 1k at 3:45 but managed to calculate 1k as 0.6 miles rather than 0.62, so about 30 metres short on each.  Oops!  Also had Garmin on current pace not average pace so could not see whether I was running at 6m/m or not.  Turned out to be around 6:10 pace overall, so disappointed not to have run the session set, even though BR says it was still a good workout and part of squeezing the toothpaste.

CJ - that's assuming Mr Hargreaves doesn't turn up and beat the lead car again this year (he was 5 minutes ahead of it at one stage last year apparently!) image I know that one of the guys who I beat there last year went sub 2:45 at London, so would assume he'll most likely be back there again. When I said use it as a pacing exercise, I meant that I would most likely still aim inside 2:45, but instead of going for an even pace the whole way I would do a chunk of it at Abo PMP. Nice run btw!

wtgy - I'm a c++ programmer. Allegedly. I seem to spend more time documenting stuff and doing the testers' jobs than actually coding. Like Marigold I'm no longer exactly enamoured with IT, but it pays a good wage and is pretty flexible, so it's hard to find something as good....

    Nice work Hilly & BR.

Interesting replies, I don't expect too many 'trades' with the level of posting on here it warrants a desk job!
I suspected marigold was in IT - 2 games consoles gave it away, I pretty much knew the others but interested to hear coro's true job title, whats the standard reply to that one then?

I work at a design / marketing agency, extract from clients what they need, tell the designers what to do and sort out the print. I used to think designers were hard work and highly strung, a few have been this lot are all 'facilitators' though (if anyone has done any management type training on personalities they will know what I mean!)

WTGY - 2 consoles??   make that 5 - xbox360/PS3/Wii/DS/PSP although I can't remember the last time I turned one of them on other than to play a BlueRay on my PS3. I must be growing up!

Coro - Is it your fault when my garmin loses it's signalimage

Did anyone else watch the women's 5k final - included a few 80-90 sec laps! Won in 15:41 (WR is 14:11). Another race which was a jog (with the odd fast lap) and then a 500m rep. Only bettered by our women's 4x100 team dropping the baton.

No, much less taxing than binary programming wtgy. The flexibility, tbh, is the only reason I'm still here. Because of that it means I can get my runs in without impinging on family time. When I'm a bit older and have more time available I'll hopefully do something more fun image

    you too brian?

coffee grinder? all I can think of is the nescafe ad - more appropriate to estate agents?

    JoolskaJoolska ✭✭✭

Yes, I grind coffee, but focusing on coffee for families in difficult situations: families who might be loosing their coffee, families who are splitting up and can't agree who should have the coffee...   Downsides are very unpredictable hours (and a caffeine addiction?).

Way too much good training going on here for me to comment on individually, so I'm very lazily not even going to try.

Sorry to hear that Matt is in the wars again.  Plenty of time until Abo; well, that's what I have to believe, as my first 20 miler will happen this weekend.  Eek!

best talk about training, 10.5 miles done this afternoon hills as well.
mon to friday 140 on the bike 47 on foot, hoping to sneak out at some point over the weekend. Most comfortable run was probably todays, which is a bit bizarre

Thanks Njord, I wondered what the coffee thing was about, given I knew what Jools does! I'm an actuary by the way - probably sounds boring but I enjoy it. I think it's the only job where I can use my maths degree and get to meet "normal" people!

Another really nice day today - I could get used to this time off thing. Watched some Olympics, went to the tennis club to use the treadmill (8M easy), then watched some of the National Junior Championships which were taking place. A bit of swimming, a bit more Olympics, then 9 holes of golf with my brother in the sunshine.

    Hail Hail

And not even a sniff of a beer?  Not really a day off in my book!

Some unbelievable training going on (and some damned decent race results too).  This is surely now the sub 2.30 thread!

Managed to ease my calf back into it gently after the fall with a 65M bike over the same route as Sunday but without a 5M loop at the end.  Took it v easy and still managed the same ave speed as Sunday despite stronger wind.  Purely cos it was dry and sunny, and I knew the roads so could hit the downhill sections a bit faster - top speed 56kph!!  One and only time I'm faster than Padams!!!!

Right off down the trendy West End of Glasgow for a night on the sauce.

If this is the sub-2.30 thread I'm outta here - that's a time I will never achieve!

14 miles for me this evening including the local 5k race.  Multi-terrain and a wee bit undulating.  Ended up with 19.59 (although watch said 19.59.83 so I have a sneaking suspicion I'll end up with a round 20.00).  Slightly disappointed, as splits were 4.03, 3.55, 4.05, 3.58 and 3.57, so I took it a bit easy on 1 and 3 and should have broken the 20 barrier properly.  Did manage to beat one of the ladies from my club (a sadly rare occurence) but only because she's been out with an injury.  She will beat me on countless occasions once the cross-country season starts...

Good effort Jools in the middle of a medium long run.

RB - I think a handful of people on here might aspire to sub 2:30 but to me it's a thread of people training hard to reach a goal, which may be sub 3 for some and 2:25 for others.  I've seen sub 2:45 and sub 2:30 threads and they're a bit dull as they're so exclusive by their nature.  This one has a great spread of runners from many backgrounds.

A sub 2:30 would be open to 4 British women, 3 of whom ran in Bejing the other dayimage

2nd run done - 6.5 mile loop.  Ran with rucksack containing 8lbs of weights to enable me to run with Hilly whilst keeping HR above 65%.  Anyone got any other ideas how we can both get something out of an easy run which for me would be around 7:15 pace and for her around 8:15 pace (which is what we did)?  Weights uncomfortable on my back.  Maybe some strides, but are these of much use on a recovery run?

    Nice one jools

RB - nice pedalling. watch that sauce - it'll all end in a fat head.

MTR - tough luck again fella, that driving doesn't agree with you - it does the same to my foot too. The sooner the school hols finish the better for you.

MT - 8 bricks in 8 days indeed, feel a bit weary for it now though. But the bigger cake is the bigger pisture, so its all good in the hood.
I always buy Bosch washing machines - you've sports kit and babies kit now , so you need a good one. The fella in the loacl shop where I bought a spare part for Henry the Hoover last week , said he advises Siemens before Bosch nowadays cos of a 5 year parts guarantee, so you could ask about that before you buy. But IMO Bosch it is.

BR Do your 7:15 mile and then bang out 60 secs of PJs whilst you wait for Hilly, either a complete minute of one exercise, or 3 x 20 sec of 3 different ones. Push-ups, squat thrusts, burpees, sit-ups, squats etc

I want to ba a train driver when I grow up, until then I remain an engineer (Hardware and Software).

I Couldnt face toeing Sundays start line with the most recent swim being the panicky one, so I was back in the lido tonight* for another go and I was much more focussed and it was much better. I need to learn to imbrace my inner swimmer.

    * didnt get there til nearly 9pm too, been MTBing in the New Forest with the nippers. Wondered why I felt so goosed but then 8 bricks in 8 days dawned on me. Still felt the need to go to the lido even though I was tired (I needed to put the demons to the sword more than I needed to sit on the couch).

I've just had all this week off work and last Friday and bagged 90 min to 2 hrs every day without any commuting to boost the hours up.

No sports tomorrow though, apart from taking the nippers to footie.

    Nice training going on.

For me, following the 5K the previous night, a 7 mile recovery yesterday lunchtime turned into a little burn-up as I refused to let a skinny young upstart drop me.  We started in a group of 8 or so, at a conversational 8 m/m, but talk stopped around half-way as the pace quickened, people were progressively dropped and we finished close to 6 m/m).  Silly, and ill-advised, but a lot of fun   Ran home from work yesterday evening (12 miles progressive, averaging around 7:20) and did the same run again tonight.

Weekend: a couple of recovery runs tomorrow either side of a 65 mile bike ride (which will be a fair bit slower than Cycling Bhoy).  16 miles planned for Sunday (no long run as it's a cutback week).

BR: you could take some knitting and/or the Guardian with you; or how about this?  Seriously though, doesn't a recovery run at 8:15 would still have pretty much the same benefit as one at 7:15's?
