Traditionally, The North started at Watford. However some claim that if you draw a line from The Wash to the Severn Estuary, that's the north/south divide. Others say that it's a line drawn from the Humber Estuary to the Mersey Estuary. What do you all think?

This all supposes that anyone cares what happens in the Birmingham / Midlands area.
I'm originally from Lincolnshire and now live in Nottingham. I've always considered the East Midlands to be part of the north of England.
Well I can work out whether you're a northerner or southerner in a few simple questions:
What is the ideal accompaniment for fish'n'chips?
When do you eat "dinner"- (around midday, or in the evening)?
How much is a reasonable price to pay for a pint?
But is there then an east west divide too? as according to the BBC regional news I am in the east. (although that doesn't necessarily mean I am a wise man!)
When i was a teenager growing up on the south coast the north started at watford. Now I am a (supposed) grown up living in Yorkshire for the last 20 years the north starts at Sheffield.
The south stops as soon as people stop being stupid enough to pay 30 quid for a 10k.
and the North was always said to start at Watford Gap which is a bit north of Watford.
From talking to people in my travels around the UK, the north is anywhere further north than where you at that time. And the same goes for the south.
For me, the North is anywhere north of the Midlands, the south is anywhere south of the Midlands, and the Midlands are a no man's land where the righteous dare not venture
anywhere south of the border is south.
The A5 historically holds the line of the north/south divide.
Wigan Pier
But they still pay more than that for a half marathon. Great North Run?
mmm north is the highlands. Everything below Carlise is the deep South. The Edinburgh to Glasgow strip is juuuust right.
Mothers from Yorkshire, dads from London so I guess I'm a midlander
Mind you, its grim up north where men are men and so are some of the women.
🙂
North is where you start to get a head on your pint
Depends on how they pronounce the word 'bath'.
But The Border is the border
I've always assumed that when the road signs on the A1 stop directing me to 'The North' that I've arrived.
North of Tibshelf services on the M1 is the North.
South of Trowell services on the M1 is the South.
Anywhere inbetween is the place to be.
We pronounce the word 'bath' with 2 'f's.
Well I call my mother Mam, so I must be a northerner.
I heard a story that the crowd at a Dover v Crawley football match were chanting "Go home you Northern b******s".
Everywhere is North.
If you put a full skip outside your house and it's empty in the morning, you're in the north. If you put an empty skip outside your house and it's full in the morning, you're in the south.
In my wife's eyes, it's Truro.
I'll be interested to see how that works SJ! For the record:
I reckon the divide's round-about the Nottingham/Derby area.
Anything north of Salisbury
