Sounds like they tried to re-create the original and do a "fake" version rather than a cover version. One comment on youtube called it the best cover version ever and another said it was heresy to even attempt to cover this. I agree with comment about it being heresy. Ironically the covers album was called Sacrilege, as no established bands including Pil and the Fall would have a go at a cover. The only people who would try were dance remixers like The Orb who totally changed the tracks to make something new. The Loop version proves they all had a point back then. Fail and not a good cover.
SR - Heresy is a big word for a pops song. With the exception of the Ghost Rider cover they were all covers that I first heard when I was about 16 and didn't hear the original until a few years later so the covers are the versions that are in my head. Loop have just done it in that late 80s dreampop style, which I have a bit of a fondness for.
Talk of sacriledge brings to mind the Kraftwerk remix album from about 1992, which caused similar uproar amongst the beardy fraternity. I didn't rate it myself. But ido quite like balanescu quartet's version of The Model.
When Messeur's Rice and Lloyd-Webber were writing this, they were surely doing so to merely hold water until Laibach could come along and truly do it justice
Nice one Josey. Not forgetting how they turned Life is Life into a brilliant track too. I love Laibach. Not sure if Tanz mit Laibach is counted as a cover of Tanz mit Mussolini by DAF. some people see to think it is.
Wilson Pickett "Hey Jude" - for me, the best cover of them all. Stunning performance by one of the best vocalists ever.
Rod Stewart "Reason to Believe" and "Handbags and Gladrags" - easy to forget now just how good a lot of his early '70's stuff was (solo albums and with the Faces)
Tom Jones "Detroit City" - soulful rendition of the original song, which I think is much better than the C&W original
Bob Dylan "House of the Rising Sun", "Copper Kettle" and "Moonshiner" - obviously much better known for his originals (and others' covers of his own songs) but these are great covers
Rolling Stones "It's All Over Now" - definitive
Tim Rose "Morning Dew" - ditto
Nick Cave "By The Time I Get to Phoenix" and "Sleeping Anneleah" (the whole album is excellent)

You can't beat the original version of Mother Sky but will check out the Loops anyway.

Summertime blues by The Flying Lizards
Satisfaction (can't get me no) by Devo
Madness's cover of Iron Shirt (better than Max Romeo)
And their cover of Israelites (Desmond Dekker)
and their cover of Labi Siffre IMO

PhilPub - thank you for that Katzenjammer video. I'd heard of them but wasn't aware of their music. Must investigate further.
Oh, and, The Bunch's cover of Nadine ( Chuck Berry by miles)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=
let's try that again

Daz the Slug. Are you Beavis or Butthead?
Muttley - No worries, they're a good giggle live as well.
Sussex Runner - heh heh!
let's try one in the "opposite direction"
cover of a Metallica song:

Enimen cover " Brain Damage"
Guessing that you guys are so blown away by Jeff that you are too in awe to reply.

SR - I'm a bit of an Eminem fan, but that version really is better!
meanwhile, I am a BIG Black Sabbath fan, but this is the definitive version of Supernaut:

Nice one Daz. Thought I was the thread slayer for a minute. Maybe i still am.
Showing my age with these, but here goes:
ooh! Rod Stewart!
how about this cover of Ol' Man River:

Low - Last Night I Dreamt Somebody Loved Me (The Smiths)
Mainly because I prefer Alan Sparhawk's (and Mimi Parker's) voice to Morrissey's but also because Low are just awesome!

On a similar vibe,
Cowboy Junkies - I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry (Hank Williams)

Cowboy Junkies - Sweet Jane (Lou Reed)

Even the all time greats such as Bowie and Boyle have never managed it (White Light/White Heat and Perfect Day)
I'd have to throw in Hayseed Dixie's version of I Don't Feel Like Dancing. Their Ace of Spades is fantastic but I still prefer the original.
