I guess Carrie will always be shock/surprise, and Leon when he reveals the pin, but the one that really surprised me and made me cheer out loud was The Departed.
I quite like the end of the Sound of Music, where they escape over the mountains and then it turns out they're in Bavaria and they get captured by the Nazis.
One of those films that you could see happening in real life, couple disturbed by local yobs and then things get worse and worse.
The ending is cruel, as it looks like it'll be some kind of happy one, but instead there's a horrible twist right at the end, and a slow soul destroying one!

dig it out Screamy, it's a real good film, uncomfortable, but you could see it happening.
Wolf Creek is somewhere in the same ball park, set in the Oz outback, links in with fears some have about travelling in such a wilderness. Similar feel of unease at the end too.
My Little Eye has a similarly pessimistic close as Eden Lake. Similarly Funny Games has a few harsh twists. The Mist is another good downbeat ending. To be honest I quite like a film that leaves you feeling bloody miserable.
Having said that, I watched "Frozen" on Sunday night with Shirley Henderson. To be honest I was relieved when she was put out of her misery at the end.

I didn't spot the twist at the end of "The Village" and favourite is probably "The Usual Suspects"...
If you haven't watched "Oldboy" and can cope with subtitles and a bit of gore, then that has an interesting twist...
I loved Das Boot!

'Burn After Reading'. Beware the CIA.
Of course there's the 'Shawshank Redemtion'. Can't be topped that one.
🙂
There's a low key Bruce Willis film called 'Unbreakable' which has a very natty twist at the end. Directed by M. Night Shyamalan
That Se7en one with Brad Pitt....it was awful though
I agree with you GFB. Way too much hype, I was underwhelmed.
I had read the Shawshank Redemption before I saw the film but it was done brilliantly.
The ending of "The Woman in Black" was a bit of a surprise too. Talk about ingratitude!
I suppose one of the most daring, though, is still Psycho where the main character (up to that point) gets killed off halfway through.
Jacob's Ladder
and no, I didn't see it coming
1956 Grand National
My favourite film ending of all time.
Closely followed by Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

The Sixth Sense with Bruce Willis
Not the ending but The Crying Game and then The Ipcress File are the two that spring to mind.
Doesn't beat the 1913 Derby for drama...
There was more blood in '13 I suppose.
I liked the ending of Alvin and the Chipmunks when they are devoured by bloodhounds.
same with me...I had to watch it over again straight away to try and resuss it out
Titanic...no...wait??
Snakes on a Plane... never saw that one coming.
Not sure if anyone's ever seen Eden Lake.

Not seen that, sounds interesting.
That would be a surprise as he would have forgotten to enter in the first pace and subsequently failed to blag an entry from Dave Bedford

Eden Lake is proper grim.
Debbie Does Dallas.
didn't see that coming.
I do too.
