Hi Ap - never run it myself but have seen many a world record defeated at Berlin!

  • Options

Dannir - very interesting about the murmurs. I just assumed that my left ventricle had  grown and the valve had to somehow adapt to catch up with it. No doubt a daft, convenient load of made-up nonsense. However I'm sticking with my 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' approach because I feel so healthy and well.

Heather and Sweety2  - I'll miss that peeing on the Champs thing but there's no excuse for it without a race number.

Andydavis - I'll look at that stuff tomorrow when I'm more awake.

Evening all been following the thread but feel a bit outside of the loop as i cant run. Ive buggered up my posterior tibialis tendon so will be cutting it fine to start my programme. Still determined to run though as Paris holds special memories for me and i dont want to let down the charity.

Great report on Amsterdam Orbutt- might consider that one myself if i can get off the couch!

moominrun you asked me ages ago about cross training-since this is currently all i can do im doing spin classes twice a week, swimming and pilates. i usually follow the first marathon training programme which is three runs a week to pace and two cross training sessions which generally works well. Hope that helps

good luck everyone with your training and races. Keep up the good work!

Thebigone - good luck with the injury. My report was on the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington DC. Someone else must have inspired you for Amsterdam. I'd recommend MCM though.

Thebigone.. Sorry to hear of your injury image Its a frustrating one, I had a small tear in my posterior tibial tendon some years ago ...long story short fortunately it healed without having to have an op. Are you having any physio?

After many trips to the doctors I was referred to a sports injury specialist who did an MRI and in turn got me the physio I needed but the real turning point was when he then sent me to a podiatrist who specialised in sports injury which resulted in running over pressure plates. I now wear carbon fiber orthotics in my trainers and haven't had any probs since. Hope you get off the injury bench soon.

    Morning

Orbutt sorry about that- obvs getting lost the the thread but remember that one as well and thought that sounded good too. Long way to go though and i imagine it cost a lot? Im still paying off new york last year

HeatherS thanks for that, i am seeing a physio, hes good and thinks he can work with it. Ive had some bad experiences with pods but do have orthotics after a very long process. really interested in your pressure plate experiience. Physio thinks its wear and tear ( im quite old) but says it will be ok. Im off to spin now, speak soon!

Hello all, lovely to read so many posts when I've been away for a while.

Many congrats to Emmy, here begins a marathon of an entirely different sort. My daughter just turned 21 and there I was, up at 3 am, just like when she was a tiny baby. Only this time I was parked outside the nightclub on taxi duty!!

ive just entered my first ultra. 50km. I have 12 weeks to go. Please does anyone have any words of wisdom? It's only another 8km, right? I have a horrible feeling that my naivety may be my downfall...

Any advice would be much appreciated. Weather will be very hot, race starts at 3 am because of this. Thanks!!

Charlie4 - I've only done the one 50k and it was trail, hot and I was sloooooow! What race is it?

Hello, Hello HELLOOOOOO everyone!!  Complete apologies for being a lurker the past few months but life's got pretty busy.  Anyway, it's TOPS TIME!!

Do you want a Paris forum (BCRC) running top?  Here's your chance, ask around on here and you'll get photos etc of previous years and also many tales of how much amusement and chatter they get on any course, and especially at paris.  So, the important stuff:

    - Get your order into me via PM by Monday the 9th of Nov.

    - Details to PM me: Email address, Postal address (for delivery in Dec/Jan), Top or Vest, Mens or Womens fit, Size, Writing on the back or not.  I'm sorry but I don't have time to answer questions on fits etc, please ask on the forum and lots of people can answer as we've had the same tops for the last 3 years (but different colours)

    - Cost approx £10 including P&P for one top, based on last years costs.  Payments are made after the order is entered and cost confirmed.

    - Links to pics of vests and tops:

    - Sizing: http://www.awdis.co.uk/ go to the JC code and there's sizing tables.

annnnnndd what do these tops look like, what's the colour, what do they say?!?!?  This year it's kelly green with white writing.

Hi Heroine, I'm running in Australia ( home for me!) and race is mid summer. Approx 38-40 deg C during the day!

Hello Thread!  and what a busy thread, too!

Signed up before it closed, so I'm in for Paris next year, and thought I should introduce myself..
I'll be in the Grey pen; number 62364.

Grey pen is probably a bit ambitious for me, but I think it's doable if I avoid injury and train sensibly.

I've run a few marathons before, but haven't done much running in the past couple of years, so pretty much starting from scratch.

Plan for the next few weeks is just to run 3 - 4 times a week, building up to about 5 miles or so.

If it goes well, I can start a proper beginners training schedule in December.
Hal Higdon's Novice 1 looks about right - it starts off quite gently, which I think I'll need.

Hello Mister Mike and welcome ...you made a great choice and were a friendly bunch in here ????

  • Options

Sorry Mister Mike should've been a smiley face and not question marks image ...honestly!!!

Hi to the new people, and sorry to hear about the injuries. But Paris is still a long way off, so fingers crossed you've got plenty of time to get fixed and on the start line.

Charlie4 - training for a 50k isn't so different to training for a marathon, you don't need to go any longer than 30k or so in training. But I'd recommend getting some back to back runs in - maybe 25-30k on Saturday and 15-20 on Sunday. Just to get used to running on tired legs. Also experiment with real food as well as gels, which get very sickly on longer runs - try dried fruit, muesli bars, flapjacks, cheese, grapes, whatever works for you.

The main issue for you is going to be heat, although I guess you'll be acclimatised. If you don't already use electrolytes, try out the different options available - tablets in the water bottle or salt pills etc. Check out what liquids are supplied by the organisers, and if you'll have to carry any of your own as well. I'm guessing you probably wear a hat already, but a scarf or buff is useful to soak in water and keep your neck cool.

Sounds like fun - let us know how your training goes image.

    Bonjour everyone.

Marie-Laure here, fresh from my first marathon in Amsterdam two weeks ago and terribly excited about Paris! I only wish I had more races lined up to get me out more. First one is next year, Tunbridge wells half. anyone going or able to recommend something earlier?

Emmy:I was already in awe of your running achievements.Running over 100 marathons is remarkable, doing it in just 3 years is incredible,Wow!

I ran my 1st 20 miler of this schedule. It was tough for the last 5 miles,I'll put that down to not eating enough in the run up to it,still managed to keep a constant pace of 9 min miles.

I've got 1 more to do in 2 weeks time before I taper.Any suggestions of what pace I should aim for in my final 20 miler?Ive been following a 3:30 runners world program.I don't intend to run that pace in cancun.Probably aim for a 3:45 due to being on holiday in the days leading up to the race

It seems that slightly "unique" hearts are quite common amongst us runners .... I've had all the tests under the sun and have quite an irregular heart beat - take a modest dose of beta blockers to calm it slightly and have been offered ablation to try and esentially burn the rogue cells that are misfiring and causing the irregularities or so they say. My running hasn't been affected as far as I can tell but my heart rate range has changed due to the beta blockers - max is now around 160 and resting around 40-45. Definitely worth getting all the tests done, as they should beable to offer the best solution unique to your case. Many people have irregularities and they don't even notice. Me being a skinny bugger means you can feel every skipped beat etc which can be a little annoying at times but have learnt to largely ignore it. Not easy sometimes tho'!

Hello Mister Mike and bonjour Miss-Laure. Welcome to the thread image

Jokeybhoy - ready for an Emmy fact that will blow your mind? She ran Amsterdam a few weeks ago. She may have even done more this weekend.

With baby Emmy in her belly !!!!

    Beyond legendary!!!!

Charlie, you crazy fool. Not you as well?!  These ultras appear to be contagious...did you sign up for this before, or after you joined this thread?

Welcome aboard, Mister Mike.  Sounds like a sensible plan.  You'll also get loads of feedback from the folk here should you want to tap into the knowledge bank!

Miss Laure - I'm not use with race recommendations in that part of the country.  Saxon Shore seem to have a lot of races for early 2016 that will be fairly local, depending on what you're after.

Jokey - Which mara are you signed up for, again?  Sounds like the training's going nicely, well dug in with that 20 miler.  Similar pace again for the next one?  I think I was doing most of my LSRs at 8:45 pace with sub 3h30 in mind.

Had a great run yesterday at the Weston-Super-Mare half marathon (my home town). Relatively small field with around 700 (very friendly) runners. Was nice to run a more lo-key event without all the corporate stuff! Weather conditions were perfect, with little wind and fog out and back along the toll road...

    and

...I got a PB with 1:22:44, so am super happy and counting down the last 3 weeks to Philadelphia Marathon now, before the long road to Paris!

Hope everyone had a good running weekend.

UrbaneFoxLondon - Fantastic time, well done! I've just realised that the Philadelphia Marathon will be on the day I'm visiting to go watch an Eagles game. I can watch the race for a bit before going to the game.

Are the Eagles the main football team in Philly or are they on par with the phillies? I like collecting local team caps...

Ohh whaaat!? You're going to see the Eagles Eggy? How much were the tickets? I was really up for seeing the Patriots at Miami over Xmas but the very cheapest ticket is 340 dollars!!! GB got a bit of a pasting last night didn't they, bad luck!!

Poor result for us last night, but we have an easier run of fixtures from here on in. It's all about hitting peak for in Jan/Feb.

I've got tickets for the Saints @ Redskins and the Bucs @ Eagles. I was $98 for the Eagles game and $152 for the Redskins. I've got good seats for the Redskins, but I'm up in the top tier for the Eagles game. I've also got tickets to a couple of NHL games and an NBA game. You can easily spot the single bloke trip planning in action!

Last time I was over I caught the Texans/Jets at the Metlife. I really love watching the NFL games live.
