You need to get on a quick course Jools as you'd run much quicker again!

AWC: forgot how steep some of the hills are around riverside way. Great long run, you'd completed it before I was even awake

Good way to end a big week John!

Happy Birthday Tom, hope you've had a good day!

Cracking long runs from others :)

Got out after the rugby for 40minutes, knee now manageable with stretching and rolling. Still need to get the real issue sorted which seems to be an enlarged VMO just above the knee

Thanks NE - hope you managed to get out and the mess wasn't too bad!

Nice LR John and very solid mileage.

Thanks Westy - I did! Hope the LT went OK.

Stupendous 20 miler there Tom and Happy Birthday!

Always good to make the LRs hilly Jooligan.

Amazing 24 miler Spoons. Hope the Achilles twinge is not serious.

That's a pretty fast 13 miler SQ. I would be tempted to trust the plan with respect to the taper. You could always add in some cross training if you are getting restless!

Yikes HA :-( Life really is getting in the way for some of us. Hope you haven't caught it.

Hope you can get that knee sorted Scott.

Found a slot this afternoon to do the 20 miler. Average pace was OK at 7:45. Not a huge fan of the 20 mile + runs tbh. They take forever and leave you a bit wiped out for the rest of the day. Still, that's two of them done, only four left and two of those will be in races. 80 miles for the week.

Probably tucked up in bed now but hope you had a Happy birthday Tom.

Fingers crossed for you HA, sorry the rest of the family have been through it.  I pride myself on being the only household member to evade novoro virus when it swept through our house a couple of years ago....pride before a fall and all that.

Loads of great training runs up there so I'll restrict myself to the races. Great 10k course PB John.  Love that you knew the park run wasn't sensible SQ but still rolled the dice and got a pair of sixes, as HA says, now be sensible.  Well done too Jools and Joe on the impressive PRs.

Wasn't going to pick out any training runs but couldn't let Spoons run pass, not for the first time you keep taking it up to another level.  Along with the other great stuff being posted really inspiring.

With half an eye on the Super Bowl I got my LR in yesterday morning instead of the usual midnight Sunday.  Being sensible in view of a grumbling calf I ditched the 12@mp.  Much like SQ, I thought a park run would be a good idea, with a 6m before and a 6m after bolted on.  On a semi trail (lovely ex airfield where I remember watching Harriers as a kid) course, I was pleased with pace and progress through the field until someone came past with about 3/4m to go, pushing me into fifth.  I rationalised afterwards that in the previous 72hrs I had put 44 miles into my legs so shouldn't have been surprised at lack of response.  No reaction to the calf so thats worth a 1st place in itself.

Lets see if I can make it to Justin Timberlake, dance, dance dance.

Hmmm. Zero miles this weekend. Enough said!

I think you mean a rest weekend NE...

Tough going, HA, hope you made it through the night. Thanks again for the advice - I really will follow it this time. Hope you get back out there soon.

Good long run, Ramjet. I find that mentally a 20M takes all day when it is in the middle of the day. But when it is done at Tom o'clock it seems to fly by. Probably something to do with being hald asleep for the first third.

Big raft of running there Macca, I'd expect nothing less. Impressive parkrun speed on what must have been tired legs.

Enjoyable recovery with spoons this morning, 5M at 8:20s. That really was an impressive session you ran yesterday - amazed you weren't more fatigued this morning.

Hamstring improving, although still noticeable. 'Looking forward' to tomorrow's sports massage.

Belated Happy Birthday to Tom - hope you had a nice day after your long run.

Bad luck on the lack of miles I guess the sleepover was a bit eventful then.

Nice LRs by JohnOz, Jools and ramjet.

Your genes are not so shitty westy.

Bloody dog spoons, hope your achilles is okay.  Excellent end to the week.

sq - sounds like good advice from HA regarding the recovery week.

HA I hope you aren't going down with that bug.

    Good parkrun+ Macca.

18 miles for me yesterday.  The route along the river Aare was rougher than I was expecting, I had to concentrate the whole way not to fall over one of a million tree roots.  Also lots of weaving around Sunday afternoon strollers with their kids and hounds at the end as I was approaching the city.

Tired by around half way already but I guess that was due to the run in the late afternoon with strides - at least I didn't rush off like an idiot and fade towards the end for once.  Running with a rucksack also helps to slow me down - was glad I had the extra layers with me post-run and I needed the water I had with me as there was none on route (didnt fancy jumping into the river open-mouthed - it currently being 5.2 degrees)

    Great parkun Jools.

Sounds like a really positive long run AWC. I remember we met at Bramley 20 a couple of years back. Really good race, that one.

Happy birthday Tom! Hope you had a great day mate. Very impressive LR as usual.

Likewise Spoons, going to be a breakthrough year this year for you for sure.

SQ - what are you targeting at Wokingham? I think you'll definitely go sub 80.

Hope you avoided the bug HA. How's the new job going?

I really enjoy the longer one's Ramjet, but I don't think I would as much if I didn't do them in the morning. Well done for getting it done.

Macca - did you make it to the end of the superbowl? I shocked myself by lasting the duration, I actually thought as I went to bed at 4 that Tom is probably heading out for a run right now. Going to pay for it at work today I think.

Hazel - great work on both the tractor racing LT and the 18 miler; looks like things are coming along rather nicely.

I predicted on Friday night it would be a weekend of 2nd places and that's how it turned out. Low key 10km in Greenwich park, some guy just flew off the front from the off and I solo TT'd for the duration of the race with him gradually pulling away to beat me by a minute. lead.

Legs felt pretty wooden and there were plenty of hills to sap the energy from the legs. Ended up with 37:06, which isn't too bad, but probably a fair way off of where I'd expect to be. Got what I wanted from the weekend though, two hardish training runs. Jumped on the turbo trainer for a 3.5 hour ride in the afternoon watching the rugby and various other bits.

    Hi all,

Pleased you got what you wanted from the weekend Joe - great work on the turbo too. I'm considering digging mine out from the shed at the moment, but it will take some negotiating with the OH before I am allowed to set it up in the new house.

Hazel - your runs sounds great, there is nothing like a good new and interesting route.

HA - I hope you survived the night.

Scott - Glad your knee is manageable with rolling and stretching. I'm on a similar regime with mine.

Westy - Well done to the daughter, sounds brutal.

Ramjet - I ran Wrexham half last year, I assume it's the same people? I enjoyed it - best of luck.

John - I would think a pacer would know better than to be blasting music? So annoying.

    Happy birthday Tom!

Great Parkrunning Joe, Jools and SQ! Hope the hamstring is ok now SQ

My knee is still problematic, but I managed near 30 minutes on Saturday. Then Sunday I stood on top of a hill handing out medals and water at the finish of a local trail race - 9 miles and brutal from the look of the finishers.. So so cold. I started running laps around the water table to try keep warm. My finger tips are still tender..

It's time for me to admit I won't be running Wokingham, or VLM. I discovered last week I'm pregnant with twins. We had our 12 week scan and they're looking good and healthy. Quite a surprise to find the two of them. Very happy though. I'm now just focusing on getting a few runs in and the knee better before I have to stop due to gravity. I'll defer London for next year, it has the potential to make a nice comeback race.. we'll see though.. heh.

Congrats JCG! Exciting news, much better than having to train for a marathon. Maybe a comeback WR next year for pushing a double buggy in fancy dress!? :p

Great news, JCG, congratulations! Hope it all goes well for you.

Cracking long run, Hazel. I quite like the idea of an A to B route.

Solid work in the 10k, Joe. Impressive as you were essentially running it solo. Mind you, I'm more impressed by 3.5 hours on the turbo and then staying awake until 4am... Don't know how you do it. Wokingham target is definitely sub 80. This will be a huge milestone for me and I still think it will be touch and go. What is your target and will you be tapering for it?

Great news JCG. Our twins are 6 now and it's been great. Tough at times but if it's your first you don't know any different. I've got a double running pram you can have if you like. It's a bit beaten up and faded but still in good working order. I used it heaps when our kids were young.

Good long runs Ramjet, Macca and Hazel. I find I really quite enjoy the long runs even though the MLRs are often a slog. Just a psychological thing.

    Solid 10k Joe.

Guts still feel a bit dodgy and a decent headache but it seems I've got away with it relatively lightly compared to the rest of the household. No running again today.

Great news JCG - I think you’ve early the right to put the turbo anywhere you bloody please:)

Joe - I made it into the 3rd qtr (2am ish) and could see it was going to the wire, great game though. Solid weekends training there.

    Hopefully through the worst HA.

Sounds like a good strength/endurance building LR Hazel, well done.

    Afternoon all.

    Congratulations JCG! Twins-awesome!!

Excellent long runs Ramjet, Macca, Hazel and Spoons-that was something special that one!

Solid 10k Joe but more impressed with how you were able to stay up so late to watch that load of rubbish! Great work on the turbo (whatever that is).

Glad you seem to have avoided the bug HA. How is the calf?

Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone. Had a lovely day basically eating and drinking too much. Wife and son made me a carrot cake to "help me see better in the dark" when running at silly o'clock in the morning.  Unfortunately it didn't help me notice the pothole that I plunged my foot into at 4:45 this morning (bit of a lie in today) causing me to turn my ankle. Think I got lucky as no damage done. Will see how well I can negotiate the ice during the next few days!

SQ-Sub 80 a certainty given half decent conditions.

JCG: congratulations on the twins, that's great news! Lots of fun ahead.

Tom: belated happy birthday. sounds like you had a good day.

SQ: early morning long runs are definitely the way forward. They seem so much shorter than anything later in the day. I was out at 5.45 on Saturday and back by 8.45 for a full day with the family which works well and keep the wife/daughter both happy :)

Joe: yes that's right it was Bramley 2 years ago. I ran 2:32 then so hopefully just duck under 2:30 this time.

Ramjet: nice 20 miler and great mileage week

Macca: glad the calf is ok and not surprised the legs didn't have much more in them with all that mileage

    Congrats JCG, that’s great news.

I’ll be Dusty Bin at Wokingham (number 321) something for the over 40’s

Tom - Belated Birthday wishes! Great long run.

Spoons – Fantastic long run! Excited to see what you run at Worthing HM and then Manchester!

SQ / Jools – Cracking Parkrun PB’s from you both! I might need to pay your Parkrun a visit for a PB attempt!

John – Great 10k and long run the next day! Impressive mileage too!

AWC – Great long run, superb finish too!

Anyway, first race of the year for me at London Winter Run 10k. I'd targetted this as a race in the build up to Bath half. Wasn't sure what to expect as my speed training hadn't gone as well as I'd hoped, but decided to set off at PB pace and see how I felt.
Surprisingly with 17,000 runners I managed to start 4 rows from the front, so no weaving around in the first mile. Anyway managed to finish in 38:36 a 27 second PB with splits of 6:10/6:09/6:27/6:13/6:23/6:08 and 1:06 for the last 0.2m. Happy with that and good to start the year off with a PB.

Hi Phil, I only have the 3rd edition, but am interested in Plan A. Do you have a list of the workouts?

JCG - that's fantastic news! Congratulations.

SQ - the hardest bit was definitely the superbowl, but it was an exciting game so I couldn't let it go without seeing the result. Seem to be able to zone out during the turbo and time seems to go quickly. I think you'll run sub-80, just got to believe it's going to happen, having that self confidence really can make the difference. I probably will taper but have no idea how it's going to go. PB is 1:16 but I don't think I'll be touching that at the moment. Would take a 1:18 right now.

Tom - sounds like a great day to me, I love carrot cake. Be careful with the ice this week, it's looking rather chilly!

Steve - what a great way to kick off the year. Looks like you paced it really well and that's a huge PB over the distance, great work.

    Congratualtions JCG!

Good running everyone (he says having not really read back)

Not much going on with me, the odd crap run but still feeling rubbish with the lurgy and the usual niggles. If I can stop coughing I will probably still run Wokingham for the social but over three weeks now of sore throats and coughing etc makes me wonder when it will go.
