So I don't really need my Grim marathon any more, or need to bust a gut trying to qualify prior to May 4th. Grim will let me shift to another event.
My next event not yet affected is C2C; typically less than 20 people run that, but I could do without 140 non-stop miles at the end of August given London is now beginning of October. Barcelona is mid October or next March, think I need to go for March!
I think I'm just going to wait and see what happens. Things have changed so fast over the last week, who knows where we'll be in one month, let alone three months from now.
I am playing the wait and see game, although it feels unlikely as things stand today it can change. I do have to contact BA and try and change/refund my IM tickets so will let you all know how I get on (I also have travel insurance).
There is due to be a marathon at Bedford aerodrome this coming weekend … should I or shouldn't I, Will it or wont it? its almost a day to day thing at the moment. My office is closed and we have to work from home until mid April at the earliest.
Debra many congrats, another great result. McH good luck on getting home
SS - I am also a complete wuss when it comes to warm weather gear when running. I am usually the last one to let go of the tights and inner layers!
On Instragram Comrades are posting that its business as usual, and substitutions have opened. In the comments/replies they are getting ALOT of abuse about just making money before they cancel etc etc.
Personally I think if Comrades cancel they should just transfer everyone from this year along with their qualifications if they want to.
I'm about to go out for a 20+ mile run, but I'm not really sure why. NDW100 is the main A race and as a small event in August I can but hope it goes ahead but who knows
Snail: enjoy your 20+ mile run and good luck for Exmoor Ultra.
Totally agree that if Comrades is cancelled they should transfer everyone to next year.
On the plus side for me, if Comrades IS cancelled, I'll run Viking 100 after all (assuming I'm not in bed with coronavirus at the time, or convalescing, and that the same applies to Traviss & Rachel)
I see the FCO has this morning advised against all but essential travel to SA. Surely another nail in Comrades2020's coffin? If that stands until my booked flight departure on 2 June then at least my travel insurance covers most of my financial damage.
Substitutions ‘should have’ opened 4 hours ago, link is not working to start the process - exactly as I said - a waste of admin time. Not sure why they’ve not been even acknowledged the situation with an update, but I guess it’s just a matter of time. Has it ever been postponed before Terry, only cancelled the one year during the war I believe?
I'm afraid I'm in the "comrades will be cancelled" column too. Although things might be fine by mid-June, I don't see they will be certain enough by early May when the decision will likely be made.
If the strategy starts to work for spreading the infection curve out as far as possible I can see all the events that have been pushed back into October etc having to be shifted again. I too think Comrades is a lost cause, they should call it now and put us out of our misery. We are going to be in lock-down until Christmas.
I don't have any specialist knowledge so this is purely wild speculation, but I can't see a lock-down holding until Christmas, or even for more than a couple of months. So many firms will start to go out of business and so many people will be losing their jobs and running out of money, and starting to worry how they will afford food, that people will demand, and western governments will have to relax the restrictions. At the moment most European governments are scared of turning into northern Italy, but in a few weeks there could well be something else they will be even more scared of (like a break down in social order if government measures start to lose public support). The virus seems to be too contagious to eradicate, so once health systems have geared up to handle the massive new number of cases, I suspect governments will start to reduce the restrictions. If coronavirus deaths can be held at the level of seasonal flu, or a severe heat wave, that may come to be seen as 'manageable'. But "frivolous" things, like running races, may well be among the last things to be permitted again. So like Dannirr I'm now in the Comrades will be cancelled column.
As an asthmatic I'm also in the I'm terrified what happens if I get it column.
The problem is that we can only gear up to a point Stan. Control of movement is a hope that we can stem the rise of cases to a level where we can continue to cope. The lock down isn't so draconian that you will be prevented from working throughout the lock. Right now the majority of people haven't had the bug, but that balance will reverse as time goes by and those who have recovered from it will become part of a population who can move freely driving and assisting things back to normality. There must be tons of scenarios being run trying to second guess how this thing will evolve. Hope you can avoid it, or if you do get it that the symptoms will be minimal. I think the control measures on the yet-to-be-infected will be in place for a long haul. Comrades is lost.
My running club has cancelled club runs, further to government recommendations on social distancing. However, those recommendations say you can go for a walk so I see no reason not to keep running. I'm glad I like running alone as well as with others. 100 Marathon Club has just announced that they won't count any marathons run worldwide from now in their totals. Waiting to hear from parkrun HQ...

I’ll wait and see, like everyone else, but in my mind 2020 Comrades is gone and I’m going to stop worrying about things I can’t control.
I might have a better chance running Hardrock with only 146 runners...
Take care everyone, and look after your vulnerable friends/relatives.

I see substitutions have now opened, with the same delay as the President for his speech!
That statement doesn't shut Comrades down? The ban expires on April 15th? You would expect them to say something though wouldn't you!
