Seriously I have often thought about this but never done it and the thought you pick your own route has intrigued me. I think along the beach is the answer BUT I believe a lot depends on tides.
There must be an optimum route combining the ideal amounts of beach, dune, footpath and road. There are probably places where its better to do a longer section of good ground rather than wallow in soft sand.
I've done this a few times, and basically it is like most races, where you follow whoever is in front of you. There is a well-established route, with little real opportunity for deviation. I seem to recall a bit where you reach a bunch of houses and can go around them to the left or right and then you meet up again the other side of them. Just hope it is low tide, like last year, as high tide makes it a bit interesting in places. Having said which, I'm pretty sure I'll do it again this year, as it's a great event.
Done this a few times and to be honest have just about managed to follow the people in front...absolutely no ability, energy or inclination to work out my own route AT ALL
am quite interested in doing this run but am a bit intimidated by the finding your own route bit. if it is possible just to follow other people though i may give it a shot
Don't worry RR. There are several hundred people doing it, and even some marshals in places where it has to venture onto back roads (near Boulmer) as I recall. As lots of it is on beach and coastal paths, you have a good view ahead of you a lot of the time. The reality is rather different to the "find your own route" advertising, and it really is a great event.
It's an excellent run, one of the most scenic too. There's also a 10K on 17th July (Coquet Challenge) starting at Amble Marina runing past Warkworth Castle to a track alongside sand dunes and back. Anyone in the area on holiday might like to do both? See www.coquetchallenge.com A holiday maker 'just decided' to enter the recent Les Allcorn at Alnwick last week and ended up winning it. I think he was from Norfolk Gazzelles.

I remember the whippets at the North Walbottle Miners Welfare.
Anyone who doesn't want to know about the tide on the day of the race should look away now............................. We have arranged for the tide to be out. The event is filling up steadily, so don't dither too long.
I've never heard Coxlodge called a bustling hamlet, but it makes it sound good. Anne - well done for arranging for the tide to be out. As I recall, you managed this last year too. can you arrange for another warm sunny day, too ?
Sending off my entry tonight, just getting the envelopes together. Part of the club's league season. Ian - I think it is always a sunny day, certainly has been the last 2 years when I have run.

If the tide is out, nice wet sand ; if it is out soft sand or sometimes no sand at all. I did 1997 with water up to my shorts.
As the marshal said to me "Keep the sea on the left, you can't get lost"

I don't know what's worse corrugated sand or ankle deep puddles.
Does that mean we won't have to queue at that bloody bridge again?
Congratulations, I hadn't realsed that electricity had reached Alnwick

Sorry, I don't know what it will be like in July so this is no real use at all.
