I know! Plus with the economy starting on an upswing, even better! <very occasionally I get homesick, until I think of the bookshops in London I'd be deprived of!!>
It'll be fun to see get more of the atmosphere when I go on the 29th.
We didn't have any relatives across the wall, but I know of a lady whose niece was a teacher there and she wasn't allowed to write to her aunt in case she was corrupted by Western thought and passed it on to her pupils. Also, people in some areas of E GErmany couldn't access W German TV, so it was a cultural shocker when reunification occured, etc.
they were defintiely not in the best place -Unc and Aunt did manage to visit a few times and since the wall came down nephews have visited although it still sounds as if they struggle economically despite unification
I know! I am antique enough to remember the semi-final between Germany and Poland in 1974, in Frankfurt, where the pitch was totally muddy, to the extent that the ball could barely roll, and people were ankle-deep in water, it should have been posponed...lots of excellent players, Beckenbauer & co, Gadocha for the Polish team, etc.

Unc Hans was a POW here and his family ended up stuck behind the wall
