Brilliant! To everyone at Brackla Harriers and anyone else who had a hand in the organising or planning or putting far too many ice cubes in the second water hazard...thanks very much. What a fantastic way to spend a Sunday morning! You do Bridgend proud!
Cracking race, and thanks. Next year though you need beaters to flush out people who hide in the bushes at the top of the dune rather than start at the bottom !
Yes, thanks to everyone on hand today, it was my first race and felt like a rabbit in headlights at times because I didn't know what was going on but all the marshalls helped and the other runners were really supportive.
Obviously I don't want to be a spoilsport and all's fair once the gun goes but what is the official line on people going around the funnel at the top of the dune on the right hand side ? For future reference more than any other reason.
I actually reckon the race should start half a mile fom the dune. Someone told me it is only 5.7k anyway, and that would sort the bottleneck problem.
I pegged it up the dine only to see people popping out of the bushes and others on the way down who could not have (in an month of Sundays) made it up the dune faster than me.
My Dad was at the top waiting to take a picture of me climbing the summit and he commented on how many people had run up 10 mins before race start and stayed there. He jokingly said I should have done it - but I dont think it would have helped my time a great deal - and besides I was in no rush and to be quite honest thankful for a breather in the the queue once I'd climbed the dune
We have this discussion every time, I'm always very reluctant to advocate changing something (this race) that really works well, the queue is just part of the whole event and is an incentive to get up there fast as possible (but legally)
if people were waiting at the top to start racing that is pretty sad,i'm suprised about that , real club runners wouldn't dream of cheating , possibily young fun runners might. i have an idea for the cheats maybe the marshal can stand at the top of the dune with a gun and pick off the people cheating, it would be like some zombie movie
another another good idea maybe put a fire <!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:View>Normal</w:View> <w:Zoom>0</w:Zoom> <woNotOptimizeForBrowser/> </w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]--> <!-- /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:""; margin:0cm; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman";} @page Section1 {size:612.0pt 792.0pt; margin:72.0pt 90.0pt 72.0pt 90.0pt; mso-header-margin:36.0pt; mso-footer-margin:36.0pt; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {pageection1;} --> extinguisher at the top of the dune to put out runners quads
That's not on, one change I would like is judges on the downslope of the dune black flagging anyone caught not sprinting flat out down the dune - why do the race at all if you don't get the best bit right ?

defeats the object if they waited at the top of the dipper - like having a pie without the crust!
You're so right there Phil - just what is the point of that? They are kidding no one and making a mockery of the thing - name and shame I say - having said that, I suppose that not rushing up the dune knowing that there will be a wait at the top may be construed by some as a bit of cheating!
I was not happy at having to miss this, this year - so keep that dune nice and sandy and the river nice and wet, and I'll be there next year!
I see, so you really do have to beat the log-jam next year to stand a chance of a decent time. Will have to pop round there sometime and try it out, in a few weeks obviously.

I saw two in club kit popping out of the bushes when I got up there.

Is the area not known for "dogging"?
Alas missed this race as had some cycle racing to do.
i'll defo be suggesting we tape off the side funnel next time - it's not fair to those who waited in the queue

re: starting further back - the problem is that the lane further back is underwater, so you'd be standing around with wet feet ............
...........on the other hand - that'll be fun!!!

You know the times to the top of the dipper, which point are they to ?
I see, so you really do have to beat the log-jam next year to stand a chance of a decent time. Will have to pop round there sometime and try it out, in a few weeks obviously.
It was quite funny to watch the top 2 guys battling it out at the top of the dipper - you could see the pain in their faces!
take it easy and rest that leg alex!
Thanks Phil.
