Hello all, a bit of background; Have been running for a couple of years and enjoy it. Initially started with the intention of doing tri, but enjoyed running and kept focussed on that for a while. Have done half marathons and looking to do a marathon in the near future - I'm in the shape for it.
I was also thinking of bringing in the other events with a view to picking up the Tri. One concern I have though is that I tend to mid-foot strike whilst running, which when I started played havoc with my calves. (I switched to my own b*stardised blend of POSE, Chi and so on after doing a bit of reading, and settled into a style).
Is my running style going to clash with the muscles used on the bike? If I am using my calves more intensively than in another style of running, am I going to suffer an inordinate amount?
Thanks,
WorriedEngineer.

The Ironman champ runs with Newton shoes and they are forefoot striking.
You'll suffer anyway - I cant see that your running style comes into it....
Now get down to the tri shop and start spending....
you develop the muscles according to the discipline and provided you do sufficient biking, running and importantly bike to run transition then you will be fine
there are quite a lot of top triathletes around - plus a few from the forum - who are forefoot strikers......
I'm embracing the wonders of anonymity. That said, I think I read something about a Nantwich event? That's practically my doorstep. (I may well be out by a matter of years - newbie digging up old threads )
Thanks for the replies guys!
Pose and chi recommend a high cadence from what I've heard - say 80-90. this should help your riding cadence which will probably be 80/90.
The real difficulty is transferring that cadence to the swimming but with practice you can get there.
Well you're already an expert at sandbagging ....
I should have added a smiley after my earlier post - I dont think swim kick of 80 is relevent to anything
You'll be selling me tartan paint next.
I think I have a complex of some sort. As soon as I start to get comfortable with the terminology of one sport, I must move on and become a beginner again!
Ooooh my picture has arrived!
I've just discovered kittenkat's thread. I best start reading if I want to finish it all and enter a tri (I might be entering as a veteran if I read it all!!) So many things to know...
...here we go...
Am I correct in guessing that the people who've put full stops after the "M" in their username, have done so after the M-dot in the Ironman logo?
And what's the deal with pirates... It's a tri club?
M., IM or Iron is the usual way to massage our ego and to let everyone know how great we are, unless you're M...eldy who is an even bigger show off.
The pirates aren't a real tri club. www.pirateshipoffools.co.uk will give you the background.
I just like the yellow. It's nice and bright and happy. I might venture to Nantwich tri to go pirate spotting. (I don't think i'll be entering anything by then!)
Clearly my ego needs a little massaging... it's a little different from having Iron or M. in it....
POSE?? Chi??
wtf??
get yourself over to the pre-race p*ss up the night before Nantwich
we are all camping on the field and carb loading with cheap booze
Cheap booze Farnie? If I'm saving money on sissie B&B and giving up my en-suite and plasma TV I want expensive booze!!!!
you'll not get any from me......
cheapo boozio...
I'll pass you over a glass of Pims then.
Pre-race piss up? This sounds like my style...
I'm from Newcastle (u-Lyme), Monique, though most of my time now is spent in Leeds (at uni). I think my computer is against this whole triathlon lark - it's slowly falling on its sword since I mentioned it.
oooh Leeds I like Leeds
I was at Uni (doing engineering too) at Huds, so it was a nice easy train trip over to shop shop shop!!!
Swim felt surprisingly good. Did 80 lengths, broken into 8x10 lengths, which I don't think was bad for a first session. Pretty tired now though. Maths says 80 lengths is about 1.2 miles. This can't be right? Can it?! I'm sure I've gone wrong somewhere... That's a long way.
Well that's it then. I'm going to do it.
I have no money (being a student), but I have a gym membership for a pool, and I've already got myself sorted running-wise. Bike is needed, then I can start!
I just can't face the shame of my unassuming username! It kinda pales into insignificance against such testosticle filled monikers as Ultra-IronWolf.
Hello! I'm very glad of this. I thought I was making a stupid mistake due to exercise addled brain. Glad to know I'm not an order of magnitude out! Will break it down into larger blocks next time, and add a bit of distance.
This triathlon thing is catching. It's probably my most googled word now!
