Of course it's good for you, it tastes nice. Don't like it when you get a bit of a sultana with a stem attached or occasionaly in my soreen, a really hard bit. My pre race food of choice.
Shame on you Roadrunner 1961...I devoured a whole malt loaf last evening after reading this thread...2 for £1 in Sainsburys and I had to have one after sitting here at my desk all yesterday afternoon unable to rid my craving for the blasted things.
Just stocked up on the mini ones you can now buy from Boots that are pre buttered! Got a 50 mile (and 1,100 M ascent) ultra on Saturday and this stuff will be fuelling me round.......
This is a revelation to me! I love malt loaf but never considered it's clearly magical training properties. Thanks guys - you've all just made my day! All I have to do now is get a bit of running in to justify buying some
If any of you are in the Yorkshire area (or surrounding) counties & want free Soreen for running; both for signing on, & to eat afterwards (with free tea), how about this race??
Ar now you're talking.....malt loaf. Have a wedge of raw malt loaf everyday. I do a very physical job 5/6 days a week and do shifts so take some in with me as part of my bait. Ive been eating it for years.
I mainly run marathons and always eat a full packet of maltloaf..no butter, straight after the marathon. Its great for recovery.

Hi carb, low fat.
The only problem being, isn't doesn't half taste good with a massive slab of butter on!
Thanks Guys did not realise it was that good for you mmmmmmmmmmmm
Sainsbury's here I come 2 for £1.00.
What are you talking about? You don't slice malt loaf - you just bite big chunks off!
and I'm with Phil - a massive slab of butter on it just makes it lush
I misread the title of this thread as Meatloaf, and now I have "Bat Out of Hell" stuck in my head!
Malt loaf is yummy though. A bit too yummy... I could eat a whole one in a single sitting when I was marathon training!
I've not made it myself, but found a recipe on Delia online
It's probably not the same as the bought ones - for better or worse!
Ultra Ironwolf
Where is "over here"??
No worries Ultra Ironwolf - I am a forum virgin and only my 2nd time on here - find it all very interesting and helpful as well.

Oh and of course the Jelly Babies.
Post LSR recovery always entailed malt loaf, a handful of cashews (preferably salted) and a pint of weak Vimto.
And any hardened Malty knows that you tear your loaf, not slice it, and that the butter should be rock solid out of the fridge.

Sorry, youve missed this years (I've ran it twice), & it's a damned good one!
As for 'the alternatives'??
So far, personally, I've only found that ASDAs is any good, all of the others seem too dry/tasteless.
Soreen is the only good one I've found too. Don't like butter, so just eat chunks of it. A large loaf is about 5 slices, a small one 4.
Quick glance at the ingredients list this morning showed the following:
Raisins - source of fibre and iron
Barley Malt Extract - B vitamins, protein and carbs
Milk powder - calcium
Wheat flour - more carbs
65% carbs (ok, some of it from sugar) and low fat.
And it tastes fab. What's not to love?

Malt Loaf has a GI of 59 which means it is infact medium GI. With 21g of carbohydrate per 30g serving it is also scores as medium GL at 12.
It literally misses out on being classed as Low GI by a whisker. I love it...
I got the info here: http://www.glycemicindex.com/foodSearch.php
Malt Loaf is particularly good toasted. Meat Loaf isn't.
Give it to the dog, it sticks his teeth together and makes me laugh
Isn't Maltloaf, Meatloaf's younger brother?
........I'll get me coat......
