morning... dont know quite whats bugging me just now. mind is a bit rattled with everything going on I think and cant seem to focus on training. Am still training at night and cycling but morning runs are becoming fewer. Quite annoyed with myself but am hopefully going to get back properly asap. Just have too much up in the air just now.... lacking a focus as well race wise.
well done elspeth on weekend and kirsty on long run.
IanJ, racing shoes sounds rather serious . I've never had road racing shoes but my new Asics feel like I'm walking on two giant marshmallows and yesterday my knee starting playing up when I did my first long run with them which is a bit worrying. But if it was me I wouldn't do anything more than a short training jog in your racers and just save them for the races?
Is everyone else racing in special shoes?
Great to hear about people cycling the Campsies, lovely area and my family lived there for several generations so get a bit emotional when I see them. Grandpa and grandma both born there (very long time ago!)
thanks BM, what with flat buying, ghana preparations, niece's upcoming christening this weekend (and nephews 2nd birthday the weekend I go away!) as well as work courses, normal day to day stuff and training I just dont feel there are enough hours in the day...
a few things to sort today and should feel a bit better by then (I hope!!)
Morning all, rest day for me today, well apart from a little tennis later.
12 miles yesterday in a steady 1:44. Was like autumn with us yesterday. No idea where this summer has gone.
Some good running by everyone as usual. Well done Ian on the new PB. Imagine what you're time will be with the new racers on
Tri, with all that you are doing just now it's now wonder that early morning runs are suffering. I wouldn't be so hard on yourself. I'm sure you'll get back into it when things calm down.
Hill Races in August for anyone that's interested...
Crackin' weather this weekend, lovely parkrun while it was still coolish. Bumped into Kirsty after - too much training can be bad for you too - could you consider it a good recovery run? Also can vouch for the Tramadol effect, Mrs Mac is a nurse and will only go to them as a last resort - but very effective when required.
Hope everyone (and their dog) is coping with the heat and pollen. We went to Troon beach for a couple of hours on Sunday and it was glorious for paddling - lovely wee breeze to cool off and help you burn without noticing. Junior was slathered in factor 50, sun hat, long sleeves and bermuda shorts, but silly daddy was not...
Haven't trained very well for a couple of weeks, but raced on Thursday - 5m around the Milngavie/Mugdock reservoirs. Quite happy with my 36 minutes, which is a new PB. Only my second 5m race, so not really a momentous PB, but who cares, 3 minutes quicker than last year.
Hope the pollen and pollution situation improves for all sufferers, but I do enjoy the sun being out.
Morning everyone - nice to have the beautiful day at the weekend and come to work with it clouded over, rather than the other way round, for once. Still looks good out there though. I spent some of yesterday lying in the Botanical Gardens. Nice, except for all the people. Beautiful place, though.
BM: I was interested to find out it was there. I'm not very good at going and looking at sites and working out what was there, though. Have a feeling I'd be staring at the field, scratching my head!
Joe - yep, it is possibly a bit too serious for me. But my Nikes also feel like marshmallows (they were recommended for cushioning which as it turns out isn't what I need at all) and I think I've just gone to the other extreme. At least I don't feel like I'm going to fall off these. The other ones are so big and clompy that I worry about running on anything remotely uneven in them. Oh well, we'll find out. They were only 45 quid (hurray for sales!), they're a pleasing colour and they look nice, if nothing else. And they do that thing where you can roll from your heel to your toe quite easily. Maybe something in-between might have been a smart move, though (next month's pay cheque, perhaps).
Tri - Hope it all starts to seem less overwhelming soon.
Thanks, Longbow. 12 in 1:44! I wish I could do that. Are you preparing for something in particular?
And - in the "answering your own question" section today... Putting in for the Garscube Gallop, the Bella Belter and the Helensburgh Half would be silliness, wouldn't it? (thursday, friday and sunday)
Have good days, people. I hope they bring dancing, sunshine and loveliness.
I'm marshalling at the Gallop and then running the Belter and Helensburgh. Had initially considered doing the full Tour of Clydesdale, but I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be allowed... and a bit mental with Helensburgh on Sunday - at least there would be no training runs that week.
Re your racing shoes; I've got a pair of Adizero Tempos for everything up to 10ks and Adidas Sequence for anything further, and a pair of trail shoes and some for decorating/gardening. I still lag behind Mrs Mac in the footwear stakes.
My reason for the reduced cushioning was down to Barefoot Ted and the Born to Run effect. i.e. I jumped on that bandwagon.
I read Chi Running too and decided that I could be a mid/fore-foot striking runner instead of a heel striker in my (too expensive!!) Gel Nimbus luxury soles. Have to say I'm fitter and faster since making the change and my old knee pain has disappeared - which was the main reason for buying the ultra cushioned Nimbus shoes in the first place.
Also, I can buy both my long and short distance Adi shoes for the price of a single pair of Asics...
Maybe see you at the Gallop, the Belter, or on the line at Helensburgh.
Good racing Ally and Ian and some good long runs / cycles this weekend by the sounds of everyone's news .
57.5 and Joe - Campsies and round about were my regular training ground before I moved over to the Southside. Used to do the Lennoxtown - Fintry circuit at least once a week in the summer, great bit of climbing . Slightly more of a drag getting over there on the bike now.....easier to cycle out to Ayrshire from where I live, less traffic to contend with. Yesterday was 40mins stop start at traffic lights, avoiding speeding cars, followed by a decent 3hrs hours of riding on open roads, then the same 40min 'intervals' on the way back, with a slow crawl up Byres Rd trying not to run any pedestrians over . Worth all the hassle for the views sometimes though .
Got a lump on my calf where something bit me , and a very strange sunburn line on my right leg only .
Back from a lovely walk at pollok park (saw you tigerspaw but was busy chatting with my friend!) I've walked about 8 miles in total.
Well done IJ - you looked pretty fresh when i saw u at pollok park yesterday, are u doing loch ness?
On the races front - im hoping to do most of the tour of clydeside - was maybe going to do helensburgh but 5 races in one week is a bit much!
On the trainers front I wear what you wear Ally Mac. Racers are tempos, regulars are sequences or nike spans, got nike pegasus trails and got nike spikes for cross country. IJ did you go to a specialist running shop? I got my gait done just a few weeks ago at sweatshop.
Kirsty - Pollok Park was mobbed today - loads of people up by the cow fields taking photos of all the new baby Coos . I never spot anyone when I run .......probably need new glasses . The only reason I saw FFB last winter was cos there was no one else in the park and she ran right up to me and went 'Hellllloooooooooo' . Probably just as well you didnt stop me.....legs are so heavy just now I wouldnt have got going again .
A ever tonnes to read back on Musselburgh 10k done in 58.28. Lovely scenic route but how bizzare was it trying to jog on the spot and look respectful while a hearse and the family cars pulled out of a drive in front of me and some other runners. Felt really bad for them. Today I am shocked to discover GSI have added yet more events to the Edinburgh Marathon Running Festival. Bike stuff. FFS after last years shambles they want to slow down and get the basics right rather than expanding !!! I'll not be there.
Gillian - well done on your 10k at Mussleburgh. That will be why you weren't at parkrun on Saturday. Shocking that Edinburgh are adding more stuff to the weekend. As you say they need to get the basics right.I am still tempted to enter though !!!!!
I hadn't realised this was on. Intrigued at the prospect of racing Dawsholm Park which I used to train around a lot but some of the descents are quite tricky in ordinary trainers. What shoes do people use for it?
Well done Gillian at Musselburgh . Gawd, cycle stuff on marathon day as well, sounds like a receipe for disaster .
Spotted on Scottish Athletics yesterday a possible new marathon in Shetland on 24th September . Brilliant!!! However, investigated it further, and found they are saying the full marathon will only go ahead if they get 30 or more entrants. Fair enough, but e.g. for me, say, to get to Shetland for a long weekend, you are talking in the region of £1000, sooooooo, I would want to know it was actually going to happen before I committed to booking hotels, ferry / aeroplane etc ......Hope it works out for them and they can get people interested, but it only went on SA this weekend from what I can figure....2 months notice not really enough if you want big numbers to somewhere so remote.
Might be one for your Orkney runners to consider Elspeth . Also a Half on the same day.
Gillian - Did Edinburgh last year and this year. Enjoyed the run but was such a shambles at the end though but I washappy cos I took half hour of my time from last year.
TP - Are they considering marathon this year TP - rather short notice I would say but yes I would be interested! Will have to go and look. Was thinking about Langdale one that weekend but Shetland marginally nearer.
Still no sun up here though marginally warmer and less windy than at the weekend.
Gillian, well done on your 10k.
I had forgotten how painful 10ks are the day after or maybe I just don't do enough fast running! Legs distinctly below par today but did a short run after work anyhow.
This is the extent of my info on the Gallop - I've not run it...
The race will start near the Ilay Road Entrance to the Park and will follow a course through the park partly on tarmac and partly on dirt trails of 1 small loop of just over 1k and 2 large loops of just under 2k. Take care on the steps on a downhill section of the large loops.
Parking: Is available in Dawsholm Road. Parking is not available on Ilay Road.
There are no toilets or other facilities at this venue.
Runners must be aware of and show consideration for members of the public using the park and should keep to the left allowing room on the right for overtaking.
Not sure where the steps feature on the course, but I'm advised that decent road shoes would be okay. I'd wear my traillies if I was running, but just because I need the excuse.
busy on here today well done on everyones races (Gillian, Elspeth and anyone else!) Nice to see a lot of impromptu forum meetings as well
well, after all my stressing this morning, actually feeling much better tonight. sorted a lot today.
sister will be sorting my malaria script tomorrow (im at work, shes off on mat leave so is availale ), she also posted my visa special delivery so fingers xd it comes back in time a few financial things sorted today as well and should be finalised tomorrow.
as I was feeling better, and got away from work sharp I was at the gym way too early so left my bag and went for a run!!!!! Not far just a couple of miles but then felt suddenly compelled to do some treadmill intervals... managed 5. Glad I did it, its definitely made me feel better. Might even run tomorrow morning now. Especially as the weather is nice at the moment. Will see how I feel but hoping Im up for it.
Gillian:Well done - forgot to mention that, I think.
No run for me this morning as our washing machine' gave up the ghost' yesterday. New one arrives later. Walked Geordie though and he seemed to enjoy the longer walk
Nice day again, warm and sunny. Great.
Tri: hope you're feeling better. Sounds 'a bit menta'l for you at moment.
contemplating heading out.. after my short run/intervals yesterday (followed by 2 classes) and getting a few things sorted seems to have settled me a little.
ally, I know the bit with the steps, there is a sort of gully down the side which you can stay in if you're running it on your own but that might not work in a race field. Might come along with my camera
Dozens of cyclists on the commute this morning. Seems that the weather is now reliable enough for the "marginals" to get their bikes out - either that or it was just that I was able to ride with my head up today for a change.
Tri chick - good to see things are coming together now for you .
Birkmyre - good luck with the new washing machine.
Elspeth - yes it was definitely this year they were talking about . I would have needed to know about it 6 months ago though in order to plan . Not one for me this year, travel from here far too expensive, and its the same day as the RAW which I've already paid to enter, but I really hope they can make something of it.
Rest day today I think.......give my sunburn a rest .
