SG - what's with the joke spelling of thoroughbreds?

Is that a DT story I can't remember?

DT good news on the hands front - beer tonight and maybe a wank tomorrow?;-)

Don't be silly Skinny. DT doesn't need his hands for that; he has a whole arsenal of battery-operated massage devices.

    Skinny!!!!!!! I'm married....I don't wank!

Though do you recall that story you see on American teenage movies about sitting in your hand then having a wank..;-)

And an episode of Inbetweeners when he tried to put laptop down when his mum came in but with his numb arm and he couldn't do it - chuckling recalling it.

Anyhow I don't want to do a Venn diagram of people who wank and people who are married so I'm just going to apologise for my cheap crass comment and move on - I'm really pleased you are feeling a lot better.

Whoops...I posted what I thought was a hilarious piece, gently tickling DT19s ballz, but then posted it, and saw his post, so quickly thought I best edit it..

In the rush, I clearly "made a DT19". Apologies old sun

I also apologise for way too much use of the words posted and post in one sentence.

He's a lawyer, he probably sits in a condominium crammed with wads of cash money, that he uses as a stimulus,  as an aid, and as a device to clean up after.

Erm, that's enough from me...see ya later.

I'm confused now....sg must have amended his post as I posted so I missed the amend.

Anyway, thanks SG. I feel like this whole run of events has ruined my summer 10k attack and Autumn half. I might ust follow skinnys 12 month London mara plan and join it at month 2.

Oh DT, hopefully it's only a temporary setback.  You'll only have lost a couple of weeks with any luck so don't ditch everything yet.  Nose cauterisation sounds horrible.  I have an actual cold and that's annoying enough.  But focus on recovery.

I went over to Stratford parkrun this morning.  Hopes were not high due to the snot. However, in typical McFlooze gung-ho fashion I decided to have a go anyway and aim for 6:15's.  The course is pan flat and consists of three laps around a field mostly on tarmac but with a bit of grass to cross at one end.

Very long pre-amble in which time I could feel my couple of miles warm up draining away (I thought of Lit's scathing comments about parkrun at this point).  Lined up towards the front and we were off.  The path is quite narrow so went our hardish to not get boxed in.  Then settled into target pace.  First mile came in 6:15 so dead on target.  Lost it a bit in second mile.  Head was all a bit full of snot and my legs still felt a bit stiff from the 1500 on Wednesday, 6:38 and strong urge to just stop.  But I was in first lady position and quite far up the field anyway so figured I'd keep going. Managed to pick up the pace a bit for 6:25 or so and then a sprint for the line brought me in in an official time of 19:49.  Yet another comedy 1 second PB.  First lady, 10th overall.  Had to lie on the grass for a bit though which was a mistake since I was really sweaty and got loads of dry grass stuck to me which then itched all the way home.  Quite pleased though and we have a 5k on the WRRL in a couple of weeks which is also flat so hoping to chop a bit off that time.

DT19, all sounds a real irritation, but in this sport, it's very much up and down.

I'm certain you'll be back, and at top form again, just need to ride this spell out.
And that's coming from someone who had a nightmare 2007, managing only 1 race, and more recently, someone who hasn't raced 1 in the last 11months.

It's these spells, that make you realise that you need to appreciate those pbs, those great performances and enjoyable times a bit more when they happen.

Well done, mcf. Sure you'll keep chopping into that over the summer.

Reluctantly I pulled out of Welsh castles this morning. I went on a 5 miler and couldnt manage anything faster than 8.30 mm for a hr of 150.  For context id expect to run 10 miles at 7.20 and end up with that as average hr. Given the forecast at 2pm tomorrow is blue skies and 24c , I had visions of me collapsing At the roadside.

Why have you not raced, SG? The 'glory days'of April seem a long time ago now.

Very sensible not to do the Welsh Castles, DT - no fun at all racing when ill and when it's a relay it's hard to pull out if not feeling well.

Well done for the PB, McF! image I, by contrast, managed to run an actual personal worst over 10k today, finishing 13th in the Great Womens' 10k in 41:28.* However, I am quite pleased with it because in the Alloa half marathon in March I did an okay time but felt absolutely terrible for at least the first four miles and couldn't imagine how I would even finish. Whereas today I was just slow but felt pretty good. So I feel like I'm unfit but hopefully on the road to recovery. Also it was a nice day out and the hottest and sunniest I have ever experienced Scotland, and I got some free sunglasses and had an icecream.

*according to garmin connect, this was almost exactly the same pace as I ran London (6:44 vs 6:45).

DT- the longest of sagas... starting with a very minor rib cage inflammation last spring, accelerating in severity after collapsing on the finish line in a July half marathon, and basically a year of heart tests.

A little bit of cell damage in there, slight leak in a valve, "unusual" readings on ECGs, but along the way a bit more re-assurance in MRIs, Ectos, blood and x rays!

Specialist went from saying there's "no" evidence of the ultra serious HOCM (which kills super fit people instantly), to a more measured "not enough" evidence, and last update was having to haul my (not that well themselves) parents in to have ECGs to see if they had a trace of HOCM, as it's hereditary...

They don't, and I've been given disclaimers from the specialist of , we'll see you in a year, don't do anything extremeimage
I did clarify that it's extreme by my standards...but generally happy for me to continue...
Dizziness, blackouts and palpitations are the watch outs...and I've never had any (well..dizzy on finish lines after smashing half marathons maybe, but that doesn't count!)

In the meantime, I've still put In 7-8months of good mileage, and i'm cautiously optimistic about general fitness levels, as easy runs are coming out sub 7 typically (13miles on a hilly route at 6.47 today), and track reps are faster than they've ever been.
I've had a big thing about how my "breathing" is for the last 10months though...I've probably built it up into a bit of an anxiety thing, or over analysing thing. Even the fastest reps seem ok though, long run ok, but tempos always felt like it was above what it should be.
So mentally, the hurdle to get even a parkrun is there now...

ok that wasn't brief at all...but I hope you can take from that, that April is no time ago, you don't have anything that is a limiting factor, or could be/could have been super serious like the above...so get your head down, and if you have to write off this summer/autumn, you'll always have next year. Either way, in the meantime, get out there and enjoy it, before something properly takes it away from you..

pps - I was stood on a traffic island in the middle of the road on Friday, and some speeding loon clipped it. Clipped the 2metre by 1metre island I was on...at about 70miles per hour.

It doesn't take much thinking to see that was a bit of a let off...

so to conclude, keep your head up, and get out there, make the most of it.

Yeah, was probably silly to think I could run a 10k already, cos I did that midsummer half marathon incredibly slowly last year after London too, and with a couple of extra weeks' recovery. But it was just for fun, so had a nice enough time and the t-shirt is quite good.

Well done on the comedy pb McFlooze. I would love to be in comedy pb shape. I did a fartlek run on Friday night which was a nice excuse to run some local strava segments hard. Well I came 2nd on one with what felt like a monumental 0.4m effort. I thought "so let's have a look at who is fastest on this one". Oh. Me, from about a year ago - 11 seconds faster during a 10 x 700m session.

Well done too Lit on turning up for the 10k. I did 14 miles at easy pace early this morning and was thrilled to see Paula Radcliffe steam past me during it. I feel I deserve an ice cream after then going swimming with the little 'un, setting up the paddling pool for him and the little girl next door in the afternoon and then sorting out the overgrown privet. Nothing like a neatly trimmed bu.. err ... hedge to please one in one's middle age.

DT - what SG says, it's not like you are injured in a way that us stopping you running so I can understand it's frustrating but no need to get despondent.

Well done McFlooze - a PB is a PB.

Lit that's a shit timeimage, even I could have beaten you today.

Well I could have done if I hadn't run the Gallop yesterday. It went okay but forgot to stop my watch and no results posted yet so don't know position or quality of people I finished with so I might have been as shit as you! I was certainly slower. One thing I do know is that I can't run as fast off road as it feels like I am running.

I cut my daughter's grass, our grass and half the privot before my sweaty 3 mile recovery run - hamstrings grumbling a bit but rest day tomorrow so should be okay.

I know! Beating my PW of 41:25 by 3 seconds! I did wonder whether I could muster a tiny sprint finish to get under the 25 seconds, but it turned out I couldn't be arsed. However, you could not have beaten me today as it was a women-only race.

    DT19DT19 ✭✭✭

That does sound messy, SG. Obviously with the medical profession there is a lot of arse covering, understandably. As I have to do so much of that in my work I've learnt to cut through it better with other professions. But take it easy!

I am more frustrated than despondent. I was really looking forward to getting back to some sharper stuff and nailing some pbs over summer. To add to my woe , having watched Wales play today,  it looks set to be a disappointing month. You'd never have guessed less than a year ago we were ranked 9th in the world!

Hard lines, Lit. But you know well enough it'll all come back soon enough.

Made has disappeared again. I hope he isn't gigantic.

Well, I actually think the opposite, i.e. I was quite pleased, and it won't all come back for at least 6 months, but luckily I am patient! I was just wondering about Mace too.

Well done on the PB, McF. Sub 19:30 next time out?

Glad you had a nice day out, lit. Congrats on the pw.

DT, wise decision not to race the castle thing. Hope you're not on the sidelines for too long.

SG, sounds complex. Hopefully once you get over the hurdle of a hard parkrun the anxiety etc will ease.

I also parkran on Saturday morning. However, it was never going to be a PB attempt with 620ft of climbing (with 550ft of that in the first half). Quite novel that you can catch a ferry to the start line and the views at the top were pretty good, not that I could appreciate them as I was trying not to hyperventilate. Ran it as hard as I could and coming down the hill in the third mile as fast as I dared on the gravel track was a lot of fun. Finished in 22:52 and 10th place, which is about right I reckon (3 minutes behind the winner).
