Message to the newer people - someone quiered doing a half ironman in preparation...
As it's so near the beginning of the season there isn't much chance for a half ironman prep so I'm doing The Gauntlet half iron in Hever (Kent/Sussex border ish) - 22nd September. There are generous time limits and I figured it would be good to practice doing all three disciplines together for a longish day. I won't have quite got the bike or run miles behind me but I'm sure I'll at least finish and learn a bit about long course racing.
Anyway I don't want to be lonely so if anyone fancies it check it out!
Can I request people start posting very negative comments about this for e next few weeks and someone needs to really putting me off entering my bank details when entries go online! Please lots of negative comments or I might end up entering !!!
When events are announced next year we can look to see if there is a half Ironman warm up event 4-5 weeks out (event 3 weeks should be ok if you dont race it full out)
Failing that we could organise our own? maybe SA will arrange another DIY HIM?
We could also look to plan our own training camp either overseas for some early season sun or weekend at lake district/youth hostel if we want something cheap and closer to home?
I was the one who piped up with the question about the ideal half, Oceanside would be good time wise, but not so much for the bank balance, plus not really prep enough for dem hills. A pirate weekend away up the Lake District training might be nice, or down in Wales. Anywhere that is not gonna bust the bank .....goes back to lurking.....
i was thinking of organising a pirate training camp in Lanza in March....
just need flights and a cheap hotel (£200 ish).
Ive done 2 camps there in the last 2 years so can rip the bike routes off. Swim on the IM lanza course or 30 mins every morning 30 min run along the prom in the evening.
we just need to sort out bike groups etc and off we go

Thought you'd retired Dave?
I have..... Now hoping I get a job so I can't go !
but it's a fun bike course, having driven it last year sort of fancy riding it
( nb I'm spending the weekend in a small hamlet in a pub with its own brewery ! I might enter VLM before Sunday night at this rate)
My money is on MdS
We have an impending house move, which means no play money for me.
Medic Girl - when is Swashbuckler? I reckon you could do that and this without issue as the swash is in May.
Or Marshman, so long as it doesn't move again.
Cat5, you need to do this race.

Awesome ideas! A weekend hitting lakeland hills was on my to do list. This weekend I'll stick to the chilterns.
Why in earth I entered a half this season I dont know! On the plus side I can get round this one and then aim for a pb next season
A half this year will be good experience and if you learn some hard lessons youll have time to put them right, really work on any weaknesses.

thoughts..?
OC I like your thinking!!
OC that was my thinking also, could stay at Club O.
I prob cant commit until a lot nearer the time depending on work.
We have done training camps in Snowdonia before the YHA has a lake beside it there is some awesome biking and Snowdon is right behind for running up
As soon as I saw talk of a training camp I thought Lanza and Club O.
I'd be up for a training week in Lanza
