I've done the opposite - entered Roth in a burst of enthusiasm that without illness and car crashes I would do far more training than last year and actually get a time that I could be proud of. However, I didn't factor in that I'm easily distracted, inherently lazy, got ill again, and had a few unexpected jobs turn up that put a spanner in the works.... so I have contrived to have done even less, averaging 5 hours per week as opposed to last years 6 hours. I'm still stronger than last year, but I want it less, and I have no idea what will happen on the day without that driving motivation as a substitute for fitness. In a way I feel like I have really let myself down, and can't quite work out why I'm still planning on doing it. I need to figure it out before the day.
unfortunately when the bandwagon gets the newbie pirates on board for the first year they forget to say how shit you are going to feel for 12 months after it !
Is the Europe Channel the canal we'll be swimming in? Cos Roth have just posted that it is 20.3 degrees - if it gets much hotter there'll be no wetsuit!!
I'll be stuffed if they ban them - does anyone know the rules - are they optional over a certain temp or banned. There's no way i can do it without...
I think it's called the Main-Donal* canal. It's masshoosive! I'd be surprised it if got really warm. I think the WTC rules about wetsuits are that they are banned if water is above 25degrees but I'm guessing that Roth would be governed by some German tri rules....
.....Good news for you! the website says
Wetsuits
Since water temperatures of the Europakanal* at the Challenge always are about 21 ° Celsius, wetsuits are compulsory for each participant according to DTU regulations.
*so it seem main-donal and europa are the same thing
you will need that suit, its a canal like you have never seen, especially when they don't put the buoys out til about 7pm the night before cos they still have supertankers traversing the route up to the day before, I suggest using the appropriate time to do the practise swim in the mornings cos its used as a busy shipping lane other times and you can't swim in it.
Speaking of wetsuits, I may have to invest in a new one - the seams have started to go on mine (probably because I'm so muscly ), which is annoying as I haven't budgeted for one
Have found a smidgen of mojo this weekend - did longest swim since last years IM on Sat, and yesterday (after dropping a knife blade first onto my foot - ouch, luckily not much bleeding, it kind of glanced off rather than sticking in comedy styleee) I managed an 81 mile bike and thirty minute run. TImes not looking amazing - unlikely to PB, but may be able to have a fun day out at Roth after all, we shall see.
Also glad only doing the run done a 15 miler on Sat, not fab but its miles in the bank, did a very hard spinning class this morning and can still feel it in my legs, thankfully I only have to take the 'new to running' group out tonight.

Is that why we sign up for another - to get mask the shittiness! LOL!
Not sure what to say there Dtichy, except you will know what is best for yourself, if that makes sense...?
Do what I do RC, don't try very hard on the day, and you can be back out there training in a week!
Ah - of course, Meldy. I was forgetting for a moment there...

The canal connects the Main river with the Donau, or Danube to you. One of Europe's busiest and longest shipping lanes.

Now must do an 18 miler this weekend.
