    Get well Moof

Welcome back to mara world, Birch. Been talking to a few people lately who had close-but-no-cigar races in the spring and want to convert to target times in the autumn. Consensus seems to be that Abingdon and Amsterdam are the fastest with likelihood of cool weather - anyone know better?

Nce race PMJ, if you are that fast while feeling out of it that can only get better

I went to parkrun for the first time this year, need to get back to hurting rather than suffering. Didn't have a watch but the field was bigger than usual which probably helped. I came in 4th in what I guessed was about 19.30 but it turned out to be 19.03 for a 9sec PB - not in Lorenzo or PMJs class yet but  quite promising.  Would need to be quite a bit faster to convert 78% WAVA to 80% though.

    Good luck racers tomorrow

Slokey- there is a sprint tri just up the road at Newbury in September. I've thought of giving it a go in previous years but never put enough time into the swimming to give it a decent shot.

I Keep thinkin about trying one this year but tbh the sub 3 is my main goal by a country mile and I really want to put in a full on effort in training for Abingdon to make my for my VLM misery.

But in saying that, I've trained for four marathons and only made the start line in two and one of those I was carrying a foot pf niggle. So maybe multi sport training is the way forward.

    Nice parkrunning Poacher.

Some great Parkrunning from Poacher and PMJ, and great to read you are through another 20miler Birch. Nice start to the weekeng.

Looking forward to Ant's report. No doubt the sop suds are under way for another photo for Minni.

Corrinne Abraham?? I wouldn't fancy that swim!

It's a small world. I recognised that name, and it checked back to one of the athletes my physio treats. Then I confirmed it on her blog:

"It has been a couple of months since I started working with the Drummond Clinic (or should I say they are working with me!?) Alex - the founder and clinic manager was a familiar face from the athletics track and would often lead a stretching session following our speed sets. I also remember him offering some feedback on technique and my right foot placement during a Wednesday evening session… Jump forward seven months, one certain race in Texas and I find myself in need of some advice regarding one sore back."

So last time I was there it was all about running form and my right leg placement. Bizarre.  Do they not deal with left legs?

Anyway, it is a small world.

The Bundesliga was pretty exciting, I'm now looking forward to the boxing.

You MARA peeps, admit that you are training, and trained for a shit hot marathon perfomance. OK. Now, if you can survive being washed for a short interval and that you have a bike, it is quite a dollop of fun just to turn up and bosh out a short tri-haflon.
Nobody else has the spheroids, but I'll tell you.
-It's more inclusive and "fun" than an eyeballs out 10k.
-Some twat decided that Tri races should start when the owls have not gone to bed.
-lakes are colder than swimming pools. An hour is enough for hypothermia.
-the run is never long enough to catch up the shit load of time that you've lost.

Blisters- I'm not sure if that convinces me to have a go or turns me off having to jump in a freezing cold lake as the sun just pops up.

I appear  to be less than lucid due to liquid interference. "Sprint" tri-haflon is a barrel of laughs. Complete , not compete. H-I-M is also fun, depending upon temperature. Otherwise we are into silly zone.

Fortunately the local sprint tri is in an outdoor swimming pool. Looks like I've convinced myself but I've also had (at least) a couple of Sherberts.

I'll bet you that the proper race bit is barely 5k of running.

    Like TR told me:
Survive the swim. Ride the bike like you stole it. You know how to run. Think your transitions. Enjoy.

The way I see it is this:

I swim because I sail. I can fall in and keep afloat or get ashore, no points for doing so quickly. Therefore I would never do a tri.

I used to be OK on a bike, did a bit of time trialling in my day, but things have moved on so much since then in terms of kit that it has become prohibitively expensive. I work for a hitech company and we sponsor Lotus F1 and Felt Racing, need I say more?

I reckon it should be reworked like this:

    First you run a marathon.
At the end of the marathon, you take any bike that is racked and cycle back to the start.
Just like in biathlon (this nice ski and shoot and not the nasty duathlon version) there are then penalties and for every minute over 3 hours you do in the first leg, you swim a km.

Hope the bike ride goes well SJ - I've got the prospect of about 6-7 hours in the saddle next weekend so any hints and tips to avoid discomfort gratefully received.

    Hope you're feeling better Moof.

I see Poacher sneaked a nice little PB in there. Are you trying to reinvent yourself as a shorter distance specialist?

Plenty of good advice from Blisters. I presume that the "liquid interference" was energy drink?!

12 mile "no pressure" run yesterday morning, followed by 20 miles on the bike today. Hoping to bike it down to the coast tomorrow so that should be another 50 or so.The sun's out down here - result. image

Good luck to all those racing today.

Managed a Parkrun of 18.19 yesterday which was the same time as last outing. Had a violent warm up as I got lost on the way which consisted of a 300msprint to the start.

Nice PB Poacher 18.xx beckons imminently

    Good luck to all racers.

Best of luck to racers and well done to parkrunners yesterday.

I'm no sun seeker (and reserve the right to complain if the temperature exceeds 25 degrees), but it has been gorgeous to have 2 runs in beautiful sunshine.  More time in the office required, sadly, but at least I've had a pleasant start to the day!

    My first 'race' today.

Entered Newbury 10k with little research thinking it might be a good 10k test. Turned out to be a multiterrain course with a bit of uphill in the first 3km before levelling out.

By the 3k point, knowing this was not going to be fast, I had a PMJ earworm looping round ("it is useful practice to get into head to head race situations where position is more important than time").

I tacked on to the back of a small group, and we traded places for the next 4km. A vet60 went cruising by (dead impressed), and some fell out of our group. By the 9km mark we were down to 4 runners duking it out for that all important 13th place, and we were back on tarmac. You could physically sense the excitment of the crowd - this is what they had come out to see. The buzz of the tv helicopter no doubt tracking us added to the occasssion.

Two guys push ahead. I was along side another guy, and the games began as I was nudged out so that had to run over speedbumps (I heard the ooo's of the crowd) . PMJ warned me about the tactics of the experienced guys, so I took control and recaught the two ahead. Now it was a question of risk - who will go first. One guy tried and failed, and started blowing. The 200m to go board was my queue as I powered ahead. The crowd were on their feet. Had the also-ran gone too early? The Finish line is in sight, but the guy who blew up is suddenly on my shoulder - the crowd are screaming. 50m to go - we need more power captain. The heart rate is maxing out, 4.30min/m pace now. Who is going to be 13th? Wow I made it.

I am honoured to have provided the Newbury public with one of the finest sporting moment they will ever have seen.

But in all seriousness, the racing bit added a lot of fun to this, and I am more competitive than I thought. Finishtime was 38:39. Enjoyed it much more than the last 10k.

Excellent report AR - a tale to regale your grandchildren with.

Violent warm up for Menna.... Full contact parkrunning could catch on.

    Interesting system PMJ!

Lorenzo, can't really offer any advice as a novice myself but it all seems to be about position and set up for me. This morning's ride went fairly smoothly apart from having to stop 13(!) times for tractors. I have a low level cold and couldn't get warm today so a touch slower than last week - 85miles in 5hrs, all very relaxed.  6 slices of malt loaf, 2 slices of fruit loaf with jam, flapjack, 2 ginger stem biscuits, 750ml of Hi5. Then home for lunch....

Nice AR - Great time there and report!

    Menn another astonishingly quick parkrun.

Poacher - Great time too. Have you done many 5k's?

7th day now of no smoking now and I have to admit the past few days have been really tough. I keep telling myself about how bad it is etc but the addiction plays nasty tricks on the mind. Anyway need to stay strong and focused.

Set off on my run today and I think I may have saved someone from potentially drowning. I was literally 100m into my Sunday morning run along the cycle path where I live and noticed a man, unconscious & face down next to the edge of the wall within a few metres drop into the ocean. It was a particularly high tide this morning and this guy was a few inches away from his end, drowning is a very silent and quick death. He is a homeless chap and must have had a bad night. I was running past and decided I had to turn back and try and move him as he was too close and tell you what, trying to move an unconscious man is not easy! I did and moved him away from the edge of the wall and left him near a bench. I was meant to be covering 8 miles this morning but could only do 10k because of time constraints. 43 mins later and as I am just about to finish my run I notice our man is still unconscious exactly where I left him. One hour later and a walk down to the beach with my son to play some footie and he's gone. Apparently another homeless chap came and bought him some food and took him away somewhere a bit safer. So glad I stopped as I would had felt awful had something bad happened to that man. Anyway thought I'd share that with you all as it ranks as my weirdest running moment.

Nice parkruns from PMJ and poacher. good work fellas

Should we alert the international media to come over to Newbury AR and leave trivialities such as Afghanistan and the global terrorist threat for the inside pagesimage sounds like you raced well

Enjoy comrades Bikeit. Sounds like an awful long way!

Was a pleasure to play host Speedy for the weekend. I'll leave her to fill you all in as per forum eetiquette.

I pootled round the half early doors in 81.46. Having not really been putting in enough miles due to a million other commitments recent weeks I'll prob take that. Still keen to try to crack the 80 mins in summer though

AR- nice racing, I look forward to seeing your heroics in the Newbury weekly news. That's a decent time on that course as its definitely long. I managed 15th last year 39.13.

Lovely picnic Slokey, did you have a flask of tea with it. Decent milage as well.

Well done on the half marathon time Frazer.

Keep up the good work with the fags and the homeless, GM.

Anyone else on here got Kinvara 3's? Ran in them for the first time today and got matching blisters on my feet caused by the the inside bottom of the lacing section. Perhaps I should have bought the rides instead.....

Evening all. The train was too cramped to get the laptop out so I've only just read back now. Plus I was too busy troughing down the food that Fraser and Paula had provided me with. The hunger kicked in all of a sudden around 4pm!

A good day in the office for me. Target was sub 3.05, pace band was for 3.04 to play it safe. Result was 3.01.50. Full report will follow when I have the energy to type it but suffice to say I'm happy!
