    Welcome back the thread Fishy1

Congrats on a great 10k time Gul, not too far off you PB. I'm sure with better conditions the sub 40 will come.

Well done on the weekend double races RFJ

Crazy man Badbark and a brilliant time considering it was just 8 days after London. Good luck with your build up to the Causeway Ultra.

A decent half marathon time 0052 on a difficult course and running on empty.

Well done on your comeback Park run time Poacher - sub 20 next time?

Did our local County road relays yesterday and we got Bronze in the Vets Men team. Pleased with my time of 18.06, but wished I could of got 17.xx like last year.

RFJ, nice racing on tough courses.

Madbark, you animal. Total runner's mentality all the way...no way you aren't finishing! Now rest man, for the love of shingles!!image

Well, I didn't just run a marathon but did manage to run myself pretty well into the ground last week. Ended up with 57 miles with about 16 of them very quality. Went out today for another subLT and felt tired from the start. Managed 4 and then all of a sudden did not feel well. Short rest and then slow jogged home (quads cramping a bit). Didn't realize just how hot it was when I set out but it reached 80 today w/full sun and big wind into face (felt furnace like!). Anyway, don't know if today was due to heat, not being fully recovered, or likely a combo of both. But think I may elect easy running for the next few days or maybe the rest of the week.

Poacher, glad to hear all is in one piece and speed improving.

Gul, well run race in crappy conditions. Agree that weather can alter time goals quite a bit. Are you thinking of more short stuff (perhaps another 10K as long as you are in the groove?)? Also, I think you asked before what was on the horizon for me and at this point thinking a fall marathon and maybe some shorter stuff sprinkled in during the build to that race.

OO, not sure how you managed to do that a week out from a marathon. Well done!

Fishy, seems you have a pretty good idea of what your body will allow after that injury. That was a really blazing half you ran and too bad your knee is cramping your style to fully train for a full. But The mix of run, bike, swim is probably best in the long run anyway.

Lorenzo - not long to Comrades now!
Bike It - good to hear your son is aiming high! Progressing nicely, if still painful.
Badbark - amazing performance just one week on from London.
RFJ - some great racing this weekend.
KR - congrats to you and your team - oh so close to 17:xx.
VTr - take care now. Sounds like you have similar plans to me.
I totally agree with people's comments about lack of race practice. I haven't even done a parkrun since Feb last year.
Really nice day yesterday in contrast to Sunday. After tidying up the garden shed in the morning, all the family went to the beach in the afternoon and I tried out my new wetsuit (don't worry, no chance of going over to the dark side!). Legs felt worse for wear this morning, so just another few slow miles.
Mrs GD told me she had thought about buying me a Garmin as a birthday surprise, but didn't want to choose the model without asking advice - she had even contemplated posting a message on the forums here! What would people recommend (from the lower end of the price range!)?

Gul, I have a Garmin Forerunner 220 and swear by it. It does pretty much everything I want from a GPS except for mapping (i.e. I can't enter a course and then follow a course via the GPS). I don't use a heart rate monitor and I don't need it to upload wirelessly as soon as I walk in through the front door.

I got mine of sportsshoes.com and they are listing it at £143.95 but there are always codes for 10, 15 or even 20% discount floating round so tops £130.

The cheaper Garmins are also pretty good and my kid brother has a Garmin Forerunner 10 which does pretty much the same but it is a smaller screen and so you don't get so much feedback so can have time and distance but you have to press a button for calories and pace and you can't choose between various paces.

I have a 220 and like it.  After the hell which was the 405 Bezel In The Rain, it is bliss to be back to buttons.  It's pretty intuitive to use and relatively reliable in terms of distance measuring, although it seems to have the odd off day.

    Good week's work, VTr . . .

well done with the relay, KR

Good weekend double, RFJ - not sure how you can run "comfortably hard" a week on from VLM - my legs still pretty "dead", so rest today after 11,6,6 last three days

Your 5 year old's sense of adventure is something we should all aspire to Bikeit!

Sounds like tough and impressive race efforts from Gul and OO in the circumstances

Nice spot of ultra training there BB - do we call that a tempo session?

Not surprised you feeling a bit wasted VTr! Sounds like you've had a very tough week and are running in gruelling conditions. Rest up.

Haha - 405 Bezel in the rain! Been there....

Well done KR! Was that a 5k time? Very nifty.

+1 for the 220.  Not too much information and just enough to see where improvements can be made in the post-run analysis.  I like the cadence feature that has helped me enormously!

I also experienced the 405 Bezel In The Rain... image

Nice speedy running from you KR.  And Poacher's comeback continues!

405 Bezel in the rain/sweat (and we do sweat when we run) was a bit of a design disaster in my eyes. Much prefer the buttons to push.

Course was 3 miles Slokey, although it's at the same place as the Park run so not sure they don't just follow that course and make it 5K?

I still have a 405 and it was raining today and it worked fine (as usual !)  Must have got the only good one by the look of it ,had it about 3 1/2 years and 7200 miles now, would buy another  image

    RFJ- nice racing .

    Badbark-inspirational madness image

VTR-sometimes we need to take it easy and not push too hard , nice weekly miles image

about 6 hrs walking in wellies yesterday in thick mud at a steam rally left me a bit tired so 5 easy today, knee grumbling a bit image

What an odd wind today! I ran a basic square route (north, west, south and east) and head head wind on all 4 legs!

Thanks for the advice, guys. I have Amazon vouchers unfortunately, so will be a bit dearer than sportsshoes.com. Quite interested in buying with HRM, so it's tempting to go for something like the 610, which works out a bit cheaper, or 220 without HRM.
PMJ - that is odd. When did you become a quadruped?image

More good weekend racing; can't believe BB is pounding out another quick mara the weekend after such an impressive VLM! Parkruns, 10ks, HMs... racing season is still very much with us it would seem.

Nothing so meaningful for me, just some easy miles around other family commitments so 9.5 on Sunday and a further 8 yesterday, including 2 as a warm up with the Ms As (aged 5 & 6) escorting me on their scooters. Not sure if that'll become a regular weekend occurrence!

Immediate goals are to avoid getting injured when our league season begins next weekend. If I can manage that, and thereby not have a repeat of last summer's interrupted running & cricketing, then I should be able to continue building towards some quicker times in the autumn. A contract that doesn't involve ~4 hours driving a day would help that; interview tomorrow afternoon for something much closer to home which would start as soon as the current contract ends in mid-June.

PMJ, glad to hear I'm not the only one that happens to!

Gul, I have the 910XT. More watch than I need as I don't swim and rarely bike, but it has been flawless for several years now. I think a new model is out replacing it so the 910 may be cheaper these days.

Leslie - good decision on the easy 5. Watch that knee.

Abbers - that is a long commute. Good luck with the interview.

PMJ - how strange! Thankfully no ill winds for my wet 4.2. Headwind out & tailwind back.

I feel like the last of the Luddites with no garmin or tech. I use a timex watch, so not much help I'm afraid Gul. Whatever you decide, enjoy your running retail therapy

That's impressive PMJ. By my rough vector mathematics you would have met the same crisp packet blowing past you several times. This is odd, because the same wind was blowing here. Like running through treacle. Not helped by a good dose of DOMS from a hard bicycle ride yesterday.

I had a rubbish 10 miler yesterday, never really got going. It was warm and a bit blowy but it was one of those runs where it never feels good. Never mind, managed 7.23 average, so at least maintained MP.

Played golf after work tonight and have intervals tomorrow lunchtime, just some 200s at the track to try and wake these legs up.

They had better wake up, my cycle campaign starts this weekend with a cheeky 30 miler to Windsor and back on the new machine. image

Gul - for what it's worth, I'd suggest Mrs Gul (or is it Mrs Darr) spends the money on something other than a Garmin. What would you actually use it for? Having all that info on your wrist gives every opportunity to fret about running too fast or running too slow. I've found it far more relaxing to take a phone to record total distance and time and only looking at when you're back home, thereby giving you the space to think about other, more important things. Just a thought.

Leslie - what were you doing at the steam rally?!

Double for me today - 4.5 run easy run this morning followed by a very enjoyable 66 mile club run in the evening. The aim was to introduce younger Lorenzito to the adult training group but I took advantage of him wanting to do it to get out there myself. A tad windy, but we finished just before it started raining.

Is anyone tempted by the Night of the 10,000 PBs at the Parliament Hill athletics track on 16 May? http://www.highgateharriers.org.uk

Abbers - hope you get the job closer to home.
Fishy - I've a Timex too at the moment - so it might be just you left soon!
GD - not bad for a rubbish run, if you see what I mean.
Lorenzo - perhaps I'd be better off buying a new phone instead then! I have an ancient one that doesn't even take photos let alone have internet or GPS connectivity!
BTW I presume you meant 6.6 mile and not 66!
6.75 slow miles for me this morning.

Lorenzo- I was just walking round the various exhibits-classic cars, vintage tractors ,steam engines and a real castle oh and all the fairground rides/trampolines with my 7 year old .thousands of people plus heavy machinery and about 24 hrs of rain before  in grass fields equals mud bath though luckily we came with wellies ! Nice double image

GUL-nice easy run ,you do need something to help with pacing at least you can see instantly with a garmin which isn't the case with a phone plus phones are very fragile and don't like getting wet or dropped ..

    Enjoy the bike fun GD

I'd love to go and spectate at the night of the 10000 PBs Lorenzo, or really does sound fantastic. No chance of getting down there though.

As for watches I have a 910 too and it is a great piece of kit. I've found I only really use it for occasionally logging miles though unless I'm racing when it gets a fair bit more scrutiny!

I love my 220. Don't really use the HRM as find the strap uncomfortable, Just love the way it syncs to my phone/strava via bluetooth and can track miles/pace etc.

Ah Gul - your weekly mileage will go down as you will be 'waiting for satellite' before each run.   I used the phone option for a few years before buying a Garmin and found it great as all that info is, literally, to hand.  I use the 310XT simply for the longer battery life for 8+hour events.

I can confirm that running for 2km piggy-backing children is an excellent way to get DOMS.  Even last night's 6miles were painful and slow.

I hope I forget there is a 32km race in my town this weekend so I can not enter it. Then I won't have the quandary of whether to run 4 miles to the start, drive or bike.  Particularly I won't have to worry about pacing too fast (or too slow in my case).  Still just in case I forget to forget the race is on, I made a note it would start Saturday at 6:15

BI- don't forget the race now image

20 miles this morn consisted off 9 easy, 5 hard (7:15 falling off to 7:30)slow down to 8's for a couple  then drag myself home the last few at death march pace ,I guess a raced half then an 18m and trying a hard 20 miler in 9 days was going to be a little too tough for my weedy legs, who would have known ? image

Nice running Leslie. I need to mix the speed more in my LSRs for the next campaign.

Wicked skills on the 66 miles after work Lorenzo. Just 2 SIS GO gels and half a bottle of Lucozade Lite fuel you up for that bad boy?

Just back from an interval session. One mile to and from the track,  8 x 200 with 200 recs. wind was blowing a gale. I hate the wind! best rep was 32 secs, worst was 35.

My Garmin 410 has been a loyal servant for a few years now. Today it told me that that my second rep (32 secs) was 4.00m/m pace. How do those one mile guys do that pace!? I was blowing out of my jaxy after that rep!

3 more sleeps till bike day! image

Leslie - you are clocking up some serious miles.
    GD - fast reps.
Lorenzo - should have stayedin Yorkshire.
Just another 4.5 slow miles this morning as I had to open up the Church early to be set up as a polling station. Might do parkrun this Saturday.
