Tortuga - I agree with what Melday has already said. It helps to focus on an "A" race, making that your number one priority, anything done in the months before hand is just building blocks including the VLM if you do Ironman UK.
I did VLM and the Outlaw in 2010, and believe that I focussed too much on long runs uptil April, and missed out on too many long rides and that as a result my pb aspirations for the Outlaw went up in smoke - there were other factors ofcourse.
BUT
You aren't me ( lucky for you ) - if you think you can do it, and strike the correct balance then go for it.
I have plenty of club mates that run 3-3.30 marathons then go on a few months later ( or one this year, had less than a month from VLM to IM Lanzarote ) to do sub 12 Ironman races. It can be done.
Tortuga - the fastest marathon runners tend to target one or maybe two races a year so they're not spreading themselves too thin. But that's because they're pushing themselves harder when training/racing and taking longer to fully recover. I don't think most average marathon runners would ruin their chances of a PB by doing more than two big events a year. More likely that the cumulative training effect would actually make them fitter than they'd have been otherwise!
If you're doing London in April I can't imagine you wouldn't be okay for an IM from August onwards. Plus as you'll have done all the marathon training by April you'll probably feel a bit of a confidence boost from knowing you should at least have the run bit nailed.
Well, that's how I'm convincing myself I'll be able to do it anyway...
NR - Here she is, she's acutally ligther than my cousins new posh road race bike so I'm hoping she will be just fine. Tubs make riding round our roads rather fun!
I did my first two sprint tri's on an old bike with down tube shifters, Just concentrate when changing the gears as I have had my fingers nearly in the spokes a few times.

I put in for a VLM ballot place so will do both if i get a place.

Morning all
Tortuga, you're already on the list for IM in 2013, so there's no backing out now. Changing your name isn't going to work, Amir!
Lewis! You're back! I'm with oii - bike pics please.
