Rafi- I think (although it's possible I've mis-read) that the bike now comes out of your 23 baggage allowance so you'll need to budget for another 34 quid each way.
Anyone know if there is a campsite handy for IM France (suitable for motorhomes)?
WW - there aren't any campsites handy at all. we looked into this when we went down in 2008 - the nearest campsite is about 20km out of the city centre and we worked out that to get to the start we'd need to be up at stupid o'clock and have to rely on a taxi turning up at some silly arse hour to get us there. add in all the faff to get back after the race; getting racked the day before, it was too much hassle so we flew and stayed in the Ibis with the rest of the pirates instead.
don't bother thinking of camping for IM France - it's no way practical at all. no reason why you can't take the rest of the holiday camping during the trip, but forget it as far as Nice is concerned.
We drove the other year - I think it cost about £400/£450 to drive. Maybe a bit more. There's a big car park next to the pirate hotel that will do you a deal for the time we're there.
i think at about a £1k i might struggle to get the better half to agree to that.
looks like i will have to stay on these shores as per the original plan.
i think the only one i will be able to swing is maybe Lanza - as she loves it there and could combine with a two week holiday. although i think the heat will kill me
If you're flying scheduled I wouldn't have thought there would be any problems with getting a seat. You might save a few quid though if you book early.
Just checked BA flights for next week (out Thu and back Tue) which is the date of this years IMF and there is still availability (although the prices are a little eye watering).
With flights anyone have any advice of who should/should not be flown with? In terms of frightening baggage costs and damage to bikes. My bike is not made of carbon but it also doesn't have a basket and I'll probably cry if it doesn't make it in one piece! (I'll probably also cry when I realise how much I'll get charged for flying it!)
I can only think of poss 1 or 2 people over the years that we have flown who have had damage to a bike ... baggage handlers are not the most pink & fluffy of workers but at the end of the day a bike in a box or a bag is fairly resilient. I have flown with the best & the worst I think and has all come though good in the end, I am guided by price .... its all the same baggage handlers
In that case: do not fly a bike through Kuwait airport. Lots of expensive/delicate medical equipment has either gone missing there or got broken! Not that Kuwait is much of a mecca for triathlons (I think).
Need to work some magic on the grandparents (it's not in school holidays ) then I may well be joing the list. Outlaw was great but I need a branded IM!
After a sit down chat with the wife, it looks unlikely that I'll be going to France next year, we have a lot of spending going on with house refurbs etc, it would be too tight, so Ive made a decision to do The Outlaw as my first IM distance next year and go for an IM branded race in 2015 and hopefully Mrs JPGB will be entering too.

Ditto GravityGuy
Me too, its all his fault
Can anyone give me approx prices for this? excluding the entry fee - what is everyone budgeting on spending on getting there / accomodation.
the more i think about it the more i like the idea of racing with a bunch of you - rather than on my tod somewhere.
(just dont tell the mrs)
Entry - about 400 quid, hotel 500 quid, flights 100?? So about a grand, plus beer money
That'll be about a monkey for your beer then!!!
Yeh, I'm trying to cut down
Flights might be a bit more. You have to pay for the bike.
Don't get a taxi from the airport - they rip you off. Get the bus to the train station which is next to the pirate hotel.
I'm thinking of driving it bringing the wife and my dog and a tent, probably end up costing more but the fun content will be 10 fold
I think someone has looked into camping - don't think its feasible!
Juat as a guide, quick look at BA flights for next year - £110 each way

Copied from page 6 on the subject of camping:
yep - what that FB bloke says above

Thanks guys, Hotel it is then
So would it be prudent to book flights as soon as you have entered to ensure they dont fill up?

Excellent point.

Its cerainly not a mecca for pirates which is far more important
Somalia is though
There is a Somalia Ironman? You idiot Barlos that's where we should be going
I dont even want to contemplate that one !!!
I can feel a come back coming on...when does entry open...will it sell out straight away?
1. Soon
2. No
Thank u!
