I know there is a fare amount heading out to Lanza as its the 25th Anniversary race but it was the pirate championship race in 2013, seem to remember that there was some discussion about Sweden but its hard to get into
As Schmunks said, it wasn't the champ race in 2013. There's always been resistance to Lanza being the champ race, until now.
Last I heard there had been a move to make it Mallorca but that there was a stronger urge to make Lanza the 2016 race. I thought it was all but decided it was Lanza.
When we did it in 2013 the practice swims we did in the sea two days before were the first OW swims that year for many of us. I'm not sure how a novice overcomes that issue. Aside from getting very cold! I think we just bit the bullet and recognised that most of us had swum OW in previous events. Again, not much help for the novice pirate.
Mallorca is September, I think, with a cheeky half in May.
Thinking about the novice issue some more, an observation might be that there is a big pirate following at Outlaw for novices. These days, lots of folk seem to start with Outlaw and work up from there.
I guess if Lanza was chosen, people would be signing up before Summer is out this year and so have the option to play/learn in OW this year and then have a couple of refresher swims either in chillier water in UK 2016 or at Lanza as Mouse mentioned.
Historically it was an IM event. There's been three breaks from that; Challenge Roth, Outlaw and Challenge Henley. I don't think it has to be an IM event anymore, but those events tend to prove the most popular. There tends to be a drive towards it being abroad. The weather in the UK is considered too unreliable.
Mallorca would give us a decent break after this year and it would give us all of next summer to train through the delightful english weather It would also give those who want to do Lanza a chance to do both
I am going for a marathon in spring 2016 so late in tghe year might be doable for me.. when is Mallorca. . after having a winter off cycling this year i might just repeat the experience next year
Lanza is during the May half term, which helps those with kids to think about , is on the sat so people can fly back for work on Monday and is doing a massive medal for the 25th anniversary.
I am taking a break from Long distance in 2016, after 12 consecutive years my body is telling me it needs a rest. Don't know if ill be out to support but I would like to think so.
My views. Don't make allowances for what people not posting or not even part of the pirates now may want to do. It should be arranged to suit those who are here day in day out and making the effort to arrange things. How many times have we done something to suit the silent minority you never hear from. For me Henley 2013 should silence any arguments that can but put forward about abroad or Ironman being to expensive.
Contenders in my mind, Lanza, Wales, Mallorca. The first two being the best IM distance races both for supporting an competing.
Top of my IM bucket list is Western Australia, is it to early to sow the seed for 2017?
Im sure Kanga would love a group of us to go over there, its only the flight that's going to cost a bit more, now its on the table people have plenty of time to save up
Barlos, that's what I've got my eye for this year!! Marshalled there 2010, it looks amazing, the swim is round this ridiculously long pier. Let's go!!!

SA - Lanza wasn't the Champs in 2013; it was Challenge Henley
Certainly prefer Lanza to Wales as it offers more of a chance to extend the trip for a holiday

When's Mallorca? That sounds more tempting.

Does it have to be an IM event? Could it be a Challenge event?

Having done Lanza I would vote for Mallorca ...

September 24/25 this year I think
dammit, does this mean I have to do Mallorca two years running then

Which was how it was sold to me
Mallorca is also a saturday FF, but can't compete on the massive medal front
So is it between the two
lanza or Mallorca

2015 you mean? I see entries are still open
What Barlos said in regards the silent majority and seeing as he took a sebaticle over Christmas that must mean it's my decision
2017 is my 50th so that's my choice too
