If candy had gone for a 5 hour walk today he would have made it to Heron for a swim - definately more training benefit than sitting in the gutter all that time!
I'm going on record that I'm not starting IM training until the winter and then not specific for IM until after Christmas. Still working on this season's races.
Just had an email from our club Prez, 17 Sep there's a cycling event on the Hockenheim Formula One track: 12-hour marathon 36km time trial or an Everyman group ride.
Might go for the time trial, I've never done one and riding round the race circuit will be different.
walking isn't stressing your aerobic systems, so they dont get damaged and recover stronger. stress-damage-overcompensation is what any kind of physical training is about, be it pumping iron or jogging.
walking simply doesn't achieve any of the benefits you're looking for.
So if I walk an hour a day to and from the station, and also up the stairs at home, to the fridge for beer then for a pee, when I mow the lawn and to the paper shop according to Barlist I can count that as 10 hours training each week. This IM training is easy a couple of runs at the weekend and that's 16 hours done.
Walking is pesh. Next up you'll be wearing a pedometer all day and saying I'm fit enough for anything 'cos I did 10,000 steps. O.K. for mortals but not for men/women of iron.
Training this week: Run: 52M Bike: dunno but about 80M including to and from work Swim: 2.5M Guinness: about 14 pints Wine: 2-3 bottles. Including Salford Oly today and a 1am session in manchester on friday night.
Just planning my long run training up till Kenilworth Half and Abingdon Marathon.
Looking at the plan the thought just crossed my mind, How the fick did I get to the stage of having an 8 week period including half Marathon & Marathon a half Ironman and Ironman.
long run overdue for this week owing to (?due to) hangover. but to be knocked on the head today (work haven't given me the next lot of data, so nothing better to do..)

Avalaf had done one 20k run at Bala but nothing longer.
You don't need to do long runs for the marathon in IM to just get round cause unlike a straight marathon you don't run the whole thing.
Having said that the one thing I'll change in my trianing this year is to add in more running and I plan to run a lot more of the marathon next time.
(not that I come anywhere near sub3 on it's own, let alone off the back of the swim/bike. but i was a little peturbed by CO's projected 80M run pw!)
