    Thanks Alex.

    Marathon conference?
  • Options
Nick - conference was for people with gold bond places. The morning sessions were about what to expect, what the start and finish are like etc. The afternoon had some stuff on fundraising, and some seminars on nutrition, training and avoiding injury. Really interesting stuff, and Adidas had their new marathon range there - 10% off apparel and 30% off shoes. Some charities were there too so it was nice to meet the people you end up emailing all the time. (And loads of free lucozade stuff too - powders, drinks, 'body fuel', no gels though. Will have to buy those to experiment.

Hi, was out at 9am doing my 8miler - strange looks off other people on the school run - confirming their assumptions that I am a total Loon in my very luminous jacket (1998 Boston Marathon - my sister was a helper at it and donated her jacket to me), wasn't breathable but was okay for an hour. Oh and had same colour hat on! They sure as heck didn't miss me today.

Felt okay, but I am getting worried that regardless of how I think I feel I am doing the exact same time - could that be called consistency!!! 1 14 27 for my c.8m, but then came home and did a solid two hours housework, I know which I would choose if push came to shove - the run is easier! Knees were achey.

I wouldn't have bothered with the housework only I have a friend housesitting whilst we are away.

Thanks for input on the jackets, will use the attractive Dollar/Sterling exchange rate to my advantage. Although my sister kindly pointed out that I owe her $400 in running shoes!!! Whoops!

Off to play with mapmyrun.com to find a route where my sister lives. I must run next week, I can't afford to lose a whole week, don't mind missing the LSR and maybe doing a 10, but still need to get other runs in.

Any input on the Fell/Trail shoes?

Snow is on the ground and it's still snowing!!! I am about to go and fetch my friend for a 5-6 mile run along the cycle track... let's see how it goes. All wrapped up and got my hat ready for this morning. Will report back later...

Hope you're still in one piece Bambina! I opted out of running/cycling to work - too slippery! Saw a couple of runners gingerly making their way to work - could hardly call what they were doing "running" so I think I made a good call. I'm thinking of it as tapering for my half on Sunday... :o)

Re the lucozade at the Golden Bond seminar - the guy from lucozade confirmed the flavour of choice at FLM this year is orange (due to popular demand...!?) so best we all get used to it. I tried it on my run yesterday and it wasn't that bad....

Had a lovely run in the snow. We ran on the cycle track and through fields and it was deep in some places. We were running into a blizzard on the way so a bit sore on the face/eyes but gorgeous on the way back. Lots of children waved to us in passing cars. Luckily it wasn't slippery as it was deep enough and no-one had walked on it before us. Took a camera and hopefully got some fab photos :-)

KayVee: I imagine the roads in towns/cities are a lot slippier underfoot. Good luck with the 1/2 this weekend and a perfect day for tapering. I prefer the lemon lucozade but will vary it with the orange during training as I find the orange more sickly. Thanks for the tip!

Happy running to those who are able to get out today and enjoy a recovery day for those who can't...

You're right Bambina - snow in the countryside is so much nicer than the slushy, slippery rubbish we get in the city. Saying that - there's a right blizzard going on outside my office window right now - lovely...!

Hi guys its still snowing at the moment here.I think there is a danger than running could be out this week.I've got a painful back because of those rubbish shoes which I'm going to take back.I need stability and cushioning and having researched the ones I've got they have the least cushioning in them.So much for specialist running shops. Also the weather is forecast for heavy rain and winds over the weekend.

KV where in which city are you?
  • Options
KayVee: Roads are clearing here, paths looking slushy and slippery underfoot but paths/fields still thick with snow and it's still snowing :-) It's so nice to see the right weather in the right season!

Stylish: be careful with that back, perhaps a few days of snow and therefore recovery days from running will do you good. I went out with different running shoes on each foot this morning, must have been the rush to get out into the snow that distracted me :o)

    Hi all

Another session with the physo this arvo , she wanted me to go out last night for my normal 5 miler to see how my legs reacted today ...... 2 miles in and i had to stop and walk back ....this time i was also feeling a niggle in the other knee, although the pain has gone this morning.

I think i can only really afford to lose another two weeks of training , although i'm upto 15 miles at the moment i just think anything longer than 2 weeks out could hinder my chances...any advice would be great.

I'm fine on x-trainer,bike swimming etc so i'll keep up the cardio with some speedy interval training.

Hi DJW has the physio actually told you what the problem is?

I don't think being out for two weeks will hinder your chances of getting around but obviously will impact on your time.

Bambina - Never run with different shoes b4 but I would find that off putting too. My problem isn't taking a few days of its finding the right shoes. Last night I spent hours on the net to see if I could find a pair of my old ones. I'll have better luck winning the lottery. No shoes no running!

Stylish - After further analysis today, she has come to the conclusion it is not runners knee as initally though (my movement today was not restricted enough to be RN!). Apparently due to tight hamstrings and calves, my muscle tissue is rubbing aginst my fibular on both knees !

Some more treatment and stretching today, no running and plenty of stretching until my next appointment (Tuesday) when i will be treated again and strapped up for a run on Tuesday night.

I have been advised to stick to treadmill for my weekly runs and outside for LSR's until i'm fully healed up.

Fingers crossed and we'll see how Tuesday night goes !! It seems such a long way off !

Thoughts on lsr by treadie? In a desperate attempt to avoid a broken neck on the slush outside (may well end up with a broken brain from staring into space for 2.5 hours though!)
I know it's not the same impact, workload etc, but for one week only?

Don't do it!!you'll go daft with boredom after 40 minutes...do something else and do it another time

Anyone done any yasso 800's lately?I feel up for a session tomorrow as I feel sufficiently over my man flu to have a bash, but can back off if I'm self deluding.or maybe a few days off will have refreshed the system...

I think red wine therapy works,I'm tempted to give it another go!
  • Options
what on earth are yasso 800s?!!
red wine is always the way forward!

Have concluded that there are enough weeks left to be able to do lsr on Monday outside rather than kill my brain tonight!

Just got in from a fantastic off-road 7m jog. The snow here is the deepest i've seen in years and it makes for an interesting change - plus it makes seeing in the dark with a low grade head-torch much better!!

Further to the earlier posts, i'm planning on doing my LSR tomorrow morning before we go away for the weekend. If it happens i'll post the distance and time and you can all see what you can do to better it!!

Well, the snow has well and truly gone in London - passed a few small patches in Mudchute farm and a couple of parks on my ride in to work this morning but that was it. No ice about either so I think we missed the worst of the black ice and freezing fog they were predicting... Stylish, I live on the Isle of Dogs and work in Euston. The snow out by home would have been OK for running yesterday - nice and grippy - but the slush in town would have been rubbish.

I'm out for the LSR this weekend - got the Wokingham half and it looks like it's going to be chucking it with rain... :o( My other half is supposed to be running it with me but he's not done any decent length runs (12km at the most) so he's building up a whole range of excuses. I won't be surprised if he just plays chauffeur... :o)

BR - the only time I spent ages on a treadie was when I timed it right with the start of Romeo and Juliet (old black and white version). I got so engrossed I did 1.5 hours without even noticing... Otherwise I think you/Alex are right - do it another time!!

As Allrover is down with illness and I have just finished my weekend LSR (hooray!!) here's the time to beat ..... 14 miles : 02:09:47. Still lots of snow and slush in Hertfordshire so was not the best conditions..... well thats my excuse!! Off for a relaxing weekend away now so no running until Monday. Enjoy you LSR's everyone and stay fit.

Thanks for the info. re. the conference BR. I'm not a good enough fund raiser to get a golden bond place, hence my trying in the ballot for the last few years.

I should have an lsr at the weekend but my cold has developed into a cough. May just have a week off (haven't run since last Sunday).

On another note, is it worth my taking my Garmin 201 to the FLM?
  • Options
probably good to monitor pace, there are a few mile markers to help judge distance...!
  • Options
Thanks. I'd heard that they lose signal quite readily.

Buff Daddy: good time considering the weather conditions. It's given us all something to aim for. I will try my best to keep up with you!

I went to the Osteo today and she thinks it's my ITB that's giving me the knee pain. Good news is I have it under control and it's not that bad but must be careful running on any cambered roads and do my exercises.

Didn't go out for run today as the roads were too slushy/slippery but have cleared now so will don my running shoes again tomorrow am.

    Have a good evening all...

I have the 301 Nick and used it last year with no problems really. It did get a bit dodgy in the docklands butnever lost signal long enough to make a difference. In fact it said I ran 26.8 miles (from running round people mostly)

Mistake to bother going to the gym-i had 6x800 as this weeks intervals, but managed 2 before backing off and just doing some gentle hills on the elliptical.
But I have been 80 per cent asleep all afternoon...
Still, hols now,hooray...good running all.I hope to be back on the road in a day or two but it will be tentative.

Well i'm on my third set of different trainiers now having returned the ever-so- expensive Asics Kayano 13 which were rock hard on the sole. Have now got the Asics 2120 but with heavy rain forecast for tomorrow and sunday when will I get to try them out.LSR could be in doubt this weekend too.

Re the Garmin 201 I have used at FLM and its ok too a point but it will lose the signal when you go under the subways. Mind you by the time that that happens one is just happy to be running lol. But yes take it to FLM.

Hi All, in Boston at my sister's house and guess what, she must live in one of the hilliest areas of the US!!!! Just mapped a c.6m route out near where she lives, so if I am up for it I'll do it twice to make a 12/13 miler, if I don't get an LSR in this week I'm not going to beat myself up over it. Going to go out now with her and drive the route to get my bearings!!

Have a good week all, may be on intermittently!

P.S. It's also quite snowy underfoot and blinkin' cold about -8c.

Alex: sounds like oyu need more rest to recover...

Stylish: hope you manage to get out for a run in your new shoes.

Sandra: gosh, that was a quick! Hope you enjoy the hills, that'll def be a good workout for you. Be careful in the snow though. -8C wow, and I am sitting here complaining about the rain. The snow has melted here :-(

Plan is for a 6-8 miler this morning. Just having a milky coffee then donning running shoes.

Stylish - how is your back today? I can certainly sympathise!!!

And to add to the dreadmill debate, my views on it can be found here -My FLM Training Blog

Hi Scoops -the weather forecst for today was totally wrong. We had sunshine for a good part of it. Hopefully they'll have it wrong for tomorrow too. The back is still a little stiff but getting better and I will run tomorrow and probably in my old shoes. I'll wear the new ones in gradually. But its normally the day after the run the stiffness comes on and I even felt it sitting in my chair the last two days.I'm not sure that the new shoes are going to resolve the problem. Nike have come up with a new shoe to replace the Kantara called the Equalon. Maybe thats my answer? Any way how is your back?

BF - hope you had a good run today.

    SB - -8C I don't think i'd venture out!
