Thanks for the wise words Darren....fancy being my personal life/marathon coach?!?  Only joking.  I know that you're right & I am actually enjoying the training at the moment.  I need to keep focusing on the fact that to achieve my goal i'm going to have to make sacrifices for the next 4 months or so.  Not exactly that much of a hardship is it.

ok jade. hate to see people make the mistakes i did. You will soon start feeling guilty when you miss training

kg welcome your experience will be invaluable. Rest that knee you should know that!

Hi guys - can I join in?  My last LM was in 1993!!! Since then I have had a couple of kids, eaten too much chocolate and become a great procrastinator.  The most I have done in the last 15 years, prior to getting my FLM place was the race for life a couple of times.....

.....so the trainers have been dusted down, and 3 weeks into my training I am able to run 6 miles in 66mins.....so I still have some work to do, but I think (hope) that I have made a good start.

My last LM time was over 5 hours (but I did have a broken foot) and I would sooooo like to be able to get under the 4.30 time - I did briefly consider aiming for sub 4 but I think on 6 months training that would be asking for trouble!

It is my birthday on Sunday and I have got a Garmin 405 as my present - have read mixed reviews about it but hope that it will help me to do more than just "continue plodding"!

Hi all lots of posts since my last one. Can remember what everyone said but will reply to some questions.

Darren, I didn't do the 10K as I thought it was more important to get a LSR in. I'm only doing two runs a week at the moment but next week I'm going to put the third one in so that I can get to about 22/23 mpw.

Mouser - by the time you've done 18/20M LSR's a 10LSR a week before FLM will be a doddle. Its not too long and about what virtually every schedule will have. Dont worry you'll be ok.

Jade - Its all about how good a time you want to do.You dont have to stop drinking but just moderately. Just juggle your runs around the partying. One thing I will say though is a soon as the new year comes those weeks and months are going to fly by.

I'll be doing my LSR on Sunday as another wet day predicted for Sat.

Can I join in too?  I did London this year in 4.20 and so want to better that time.  I am just not very motivated at the moment. I have just organised to run tomorrow and my aim now is to run at least 25 miles per week leading up to Christmas to get myself to the level of fitness that I had earlier in the year.  I have to knock the partying on the head now! Hopefully posting on here will spur me on?!

Hi and welcome.  How long are peoples long runs so far.  I'm looking to do about 7 miles tomorrow, still building up slowly after a series of injuries.

    Hello all,

Currently doing 10-13 on a sunday, but I have been training since July. You are doing right taking it slowly, most plans only start late December.

Superchick- You have 5 months to prove to yourself how good you are. Crack the mental side of it and the fitness will come.

I did 4 steady miles yesterday and am hoping to do 7 3/4 tomorrow.........I am hoping to get round without stopping, but won't be pushing the time - it will all be about getting as far as I can without walking I think!

Ipod charged and ready to go..........good luck to everyone else doing their long run tomorrow!

Webpage looks very useful.  Did my 7 miles today (7.37 to be precise) and felt ok.  Need to lose weight though feel a bit sluggish.  Very wet and muddy.

I did 7.75 - my longest run so far.  I was very very happy although at 11 min miles I know I need to get quicker if I am to do 4:20 in the marathon.

There were so many leaves on the pavements that at times it felt more like cross country running!  Very blustery too, which made it harder, but at least it was dry so grateful for that.

Hope everyone else managed to get good long runs in today.

Hi I managed 8 miles today and feel a bit more motivated.  Have made myself a running log to start logging my miles - hopefully this will help.image
  • Options

Well done superchick image  I used to keep a running log which was really useful because you "forget" how much you have improved.  To be able to look back and see how much further you can run "now" compared with a couple of months ago is motivating in itself!

Hi all... have come back from my holidays injured and am on the 'bench' with a sore hamstring... image.  Had accupuncture and a massage yesterday so hope to be back on Saturday morning for 8 miles with superchick... image.  My hamstring/glute problem is apparently caused by a weak core so on saturday lunchtime I have a pilates teacher coming to my house...  Does anyone have any pilates experience?
  • Options
havent done pilates, but have done specific core stabilty training at physio and that helped no end. Was for a lower back issue with me, but I know that core stability is king. The same sports injury clinic now has pilates classes so i guess this is a pretty good indication of its suitability. Its a little less "zen" than yoga if you know what I mean image

    Hi,

Any tips for core excercises? I feel like I to try something apart from just banging out the miles?

  • Options

As Adrian says... core is king!!!  I don't have a clue about any specific exercises but will be able to let you know after saturdays training!   image

    Thanks,

The beer gut is going but has to disappear if I am to do myself justice.

  • Options

Ok, so managed to do 2.61 miles at 10.09 pace........only need to do 10 times that amount and I will be fine.......image

Something tells me that I have my work cut out........might go and look up some of those core exercises - see if I can find myself some strength, speed or stamina!  I am not being too hopeful of finding all three but at least one would be appreciated!

    DONT PANIC!!!!

5 Months to go, concentrate on building up the miles. The 16 week training schedules start January...Then you can Panic

p.s Thinking about doing Norwic half. What is the course like and does it get crowded?

  • Options

Darren I have not done the Norwich Half before but it seems to get some good reviews on there - the closing date is next week and I am leaving it until more or less the last minute to enter........

I have my range of 16 week training schedules at the ready - there are so many to choose from so I will have to make a decision in a few weeks based on where I am at the end of December.

But panic......hell no!  well, not this week, anyway!

Ahhh image I can't believe it.....out for my run last night, feeling really good & running an average of 9.12min miles for about 2.5 miles when fell really hard and landed straight on on left knee....knee and hands all cut up & bleeding and REALLY painful, had to hobble the last 1.5 miles home.  Got home, took one look at my disfigured knee & burst straight into tears (I know, I am a girl!!)...yes because it hurt but mostly because of the impact it might have on my training.

Anyway, boyfriend came home from football training at about 10.00 and saw the state of me & dragged me down to A&E as he thought I may have fractured my knee cap.  They saw me, thought it looked dodgy so took an x-ray.  Luckily nothing fractured although they said that there was something that could have been a tiny hairline fracture at the bottom of my thigh bone, but unlikely & they wouldn't be able to do anything about it anyway.  I breathed a big sigh of relief I can tell you.

They just told me to rest it but keep it moving(!) and start training again when it's no longer painful.  Still really painful today image but I suppose it's going to be for a few days really.

What does everything think - should I make an appointment with a physio next week to get it checked out from a training point of view?

It's so frustrating, why is that once you start to feel good, something goes wrong!!!  Although I can see that most people on here have got some sort of injury at the moment so that makes me feel a little bit better about it!

  • Options

Oh how horrid...  My advice would be to rest and do nothing for a week at least. even if you feel like it.. give it time to heal.  The marathon is not til the end of April so plenty of time...  When I fell it was more painful a couple of days afterwards so don't worry too much if that happens to you...  One more thing... don't take any anti-inflamatories if there is a chance of a hairline fracture as they impede bone healing...

Think lots of us are injured.. mainly through upping the mileage and speed to quickly probably... I know my injury was caused by thinking I could run with the fast boys (or speedy chicks)!!!  Just need to speed up slowely I suppose and go by the book...

Take care of yourself... I'm sure it will be ok! image

  • Options

I agree - don't rush things, frustrating though it is to have prolonged rest.  An appointment with a physio is a good idea, but if they are not a sportsperson themselves, they may be too cautious!  So be prepared for answers you don't want to hear (and then make your own mind up anyway!).  If you can get to see someone who specialises in sports injuries, that would be best because they understand the emotion etc behind not being able to run.

Good luck and take care x

Jade-Injuries are our bodies way of saying- go on treat yourself !

I am a bit puzzeled I am currently doing about 5miles at 8-10 to 8-40 pace which is about my limit for an even pace (heart rate about 80-85%) however when I finish after 2 min my breathing is back to normal no problem however my legs feel it. Does this mean my cardio vascular fitness is better than my leg strength or am I just a girls blouse and should push myself harder?

  • Options
Darren... I would say your cardio fitness is well above your leg fitness and it looks like if you build slowely and thus avoid injury you could achieve under 4 hours easily... image
