very frustrating, looking to get my 3rd rejection this year so i can get in for 2012 automatically
The server is overloaded for everyone. Very few people, if any, will be signing up at the moment. It is simply being hammered by the sudden rush of people and the constant refreshing.
It's probably best to leave your PCs and come back this afternoon and try then. I would be very surprised if they fill up the allocation of places today or in a few days.
This is exactly what happened last year, and the only way it will start to work again is if the amount of people trying to use the site reduces. Please do not panic about the application number system. A number above 100,000 does not mean 100,000 people have signed up!
I know it's easy for me to say the above but don't panic. No one can sign up right now, you're not missing out, you've not missed out.. there is still plenty of time. I'm confident everyone here will get to sign up eventually.
Absolute disgrace this is
I can confirm that we have not had anywhere near 100,000 registrations before the site and that our hosting service, Rackspace, is working very hard to resolve the issue. Rackspace is one of Europe's largest hosting companies. The site was stress tested to very high levels but the demand at 9am was so high that it caused the difficulties now being experienced.
The site has been unavailable whilst the new firewall is being installed (that was at capacity as well).

Royal Parks put up a 'sorry, we're trying to fix it' message when this happened with its entry.
Suggestions for making it a better system: could keep the online entry system but do it later in the year so that people don't enter on a whim. A mix of the old paper system and new online system.

Hey guys I am back did a quick run round the house to do a quick tidy. Can not believe the site is still down, but I am not going to try now till later, can not be bothered to let this completly stress me out. Think it is a complete shambles and will be very upset if miss out since it will be my sixth application. Will defo complain if it comes to it.
FP - about half a dozen if the tech problems aren't sorted!
