Talking of TVXC anyone planning to do Metros one on Sunday in Hillingdon; pretty tough course with a fair size stream to cross and then the bank to clamber up (on both laps) but I suppose that's XC for you (proper or not!). At least it might not be as muddy as previous years given the earlier time of year so I might give it a go.

Hope the dog didn't get too much of your knee Bus; not sure I could have been as forgiving to the owner as you were, however polite she was!

Oddly I was very polite to the owner - even though it was a bloke! Normally I shout and swear at them, but probably because he was obviously very sorry and concerned. I even asked him if his dog was OK, because it took quite a blow to its jaw from my knee. Still no idea why they like my hairy legs so much!

Yes SG, quite correct - only a "discomfort" in the knee ;-). The left leg is, however, pain, but I've been cleared by a medical professional to carry on with that one anyway so that's OK.....

Talking of which - I now have an appointment with a proper sports injury Dr in a couple of weeks time. It's the same guy who sorted out my back problem 9 years ago, so I have some faith in him.

Looks like the first head-torcher of the season tonight. It has a certain novelty value now, which will have lost its appeal by December!

Pain in the knees tell me about it.

Not much more to add on Bus and dogs, maybe shave your legs?

I may race Metros, only done it once before and the course seems to change every year. I like TVXC.

That would make them even more sausage like Reg :-)

No progress Ric? Funnily enough, it was knee pain from cycling that first got me into a bit of running, after being told by a hospital specialist that I needed a fairly drastic knee op. That was 28 years ago and despite ignoring him and not having the op, I'm still running and cycling!

Hey Matt - just noticed I'm 90 places above you on the FRA forum mileage chart for the week so far :-). That's got to be a first!!!

Bloody 60 miles last week and it felt like I'd had the week off Bus. ;-)

     FRA Forum mileage? whats that?

Pete - Please try not to mention 'Hillingdon' and 'Cross country' in the same sentence..i'm still trying to get over the Southerns there 10 years ago or so ;)   Unfit and nearly bonked at the end as I had been out with tendonitis of the ankle. Then tweaked my knee during the race and was out for another 6 weeks. Bastard of a race that was. Hideous.

    Yes Bus, progress.

The re-hab exercises have almost sorted things. I had a bit of a walk/jog this morning which went ok.

Finally manged a bike ride at 20 mph average. Quite windy as well.

With cycling I tend to push the pace more or less the whole time, regardless of distance. That I find, works.
Running is the opposite. Going easy most of the time works best.

    🙂

FRA- Fun Run Aficionados, come on Simon, thought everyone knew that

Broke the Mon-Wed 6&4 recovery zone, with a standalone 10 today. Felt long work! Windy, wet etc. 7.01 average and only a watch based HR of 135 but felt harder than for a while.

If i could get the hill reps sesh in tomorrow i'm effect on plan still, just having put 2 sessions across 2 weeks while seeing the cold off.

if I kept getting knocked over crossing the roads (and others weren't)...I think it would be fair to stop blaming the motorists and start blaming myself.

So I now blame dog bait, Bus....he is clearly antagonising the 4 legged friends somehow. :)

need to read back properly but hope all is well with Scott and family

great work on the iron man Reg.

300 Park runs pete is some going...think im nearly at 10 now

Alehouse, hope that achilies keeps heeling

Im pulling out of the national relays this weekend.  not in any form (as last weeks xc race proved) so I just need to train. Plus we have a youngster super eager to race, who is a reserve. So will do him the world of good and it allows me to go off and train harder.

I do actually wave freshly cooked sausages at every dog I see, then poke them with a sharp stick when they approach  as I eat the sausage in front of them, shouting "loser!", but not sure why that annoys them?

Matt - only a few more days of the torture of low mileage, easy paced runs now ;-)

Nice 10 SG - must have been hard work in the wind this morning!

    That's good news Ric.

Simon - it's a Strava group of people on the Fell Runners Association Forum. Meaningless stats of course, but I'm not gonna get in front of Matt any other way now am I :-)

Have to admit, waiting for the injury to repair itself is wearing a bit thin. Over twelve weeks now.
The thing which is odd is how long it took before I realised I was actually injured. Maybe a couple of weeks.

You get used to just going out, run, come home again. Now and again there's the odd ache or pain but those usually disappear soon enough, until one day there's an ache or pain which doesn't.

It's when 'running it off' makes things worse. That's when it's crap. That's an over use injury and more of the same is no use at all.

I've worked out the where's and why's of my own set back. The original damage was an impact job. The subsequent running, turned it into an over use job.

    🙂

A few bits to catch up on!
Great work on the IM, Reg! How you can put out a sub-3h30 mara after that bike and swim, jeez! Not to mention after the drama in the lead up! That would literally be my race nightmare.
Bus, an isolated incident or two and I'd blame the dogs, like the others have said, it's clearly you and your antagonistic exploits ;)
Scott, hope all is okay with the Mrs and the little one! Good to see you getting in some regular miles, even if it's only small now, it's great that you're back at it.
Ric, great cycling! I'm still awaiting a 20mph ride! Really hope you get back to the running soon.

I'm a bit like SG atm, suffering with the lurgy - but I opted to stop running in the hope it would help it disappear!
Not run since last Sunday, as was away a few days, and then started feeling rather wretched. Headache/fatigue pretty much gone today, so decided to get out - 7mi at 7:48s, +20s/mi and couple bpm higher compared to when I ran the route a fortnight ago.
Maybe running through would have been better, but couldn't bring myself to do it!

Now wondering how to tackle the race on Sunday, given the less-than-ideal run up. Maybe a tempo effort rather than race.

Thanks MH, hope you get better soon. i did Reading HM with a virus and just did it at MP.

    Nice cycling Ric.

Did my first ever double today, ran to work and back 8.5 miles e/w. 7:0x on the way and 6:2x on the return with 5 miles at MP/LT. Was a bit faster than MP. Felt reasonably good, I think I need to drop a bit of weight to really do well at Abingdon but I'm not going to lose much in 2 weeks.

Cheers guys, 3 weeks back 'running' 8 / 10 / 8 miles per week and two x 2 mile runs this week I am starting to feel better but I'm still classing myself as injured, it's still all restricted and stiff but pain free for now really. I think if I went faster I'd be screwed though. My HR is around 180 for 7:30 m/m so safe to say fitness is lost a touch and it's a hard blowing effort even at that pace

Mrs is ok and we find out tomorrow more, she will go back twice a week each week, looks like she will be home and date for delivery end of October in 2/3 weeks or so, so a month early for baby. Im not getting paternity leave as I don't qualify where I changed jobs so it will be short notice holiday and switching days around .

I could run more but I am lazy, I don't cycle much at all now either maybe once or twice a week, but really I have been just so busy working every day or away at events it activation nights  I think my last day off was mid August and I've worked just over 300 hours this pay period which ends Sunday and is only a 28 day cycle. Not super long days but adds up when you do 7 days etc. Love it though but I have missed my little weekends with Mia so need to sort that out , the ex has been great and understanding and I've had her mid week and dropped her to school a few times but hopefully things will settle now with work and get get straight with everything !!!

Just need a dose of dissentry Reg - you'll be fine ;-). Seriously though, you cycle about a zillion miles a month, plus the swimming and running - I don't believe you can have any spare flesh. If you did, you'd have dogs after you as well.... (nice double paces by the way for a fat bastard!).

Race it Matthew. No point otherwise...

Ric - at least you can blame the tow bar, but it's still frustrating to be suffering for that length of time.

I eat a lot of sweet stuff Bus, I mean a lot. I'm 74kg/6ft 1 which is heavy for a runner. Chatting to a few people who are much faster, they are all less than 65 Kgs. I reckon if I could drop to circa 68kg I could get into the sort of sub 34/75/2:40 region. So that's the plan. Today I had a ham and cheese croissant, packet of jaffa cakes, slice of cake & a doughnut and I feel like i've done well  :D

Cheers Bus, didn't think it was the Fun Run Aficionados! Reg you fat bastard ;) you need to embrace the cardboard at work, I have packets of Ryvita and corn cakes and munch them when I get 'mouth bored'.

    Shame about relays Dean...ML84 relaying?

100% reg I'm around 80kg and 5/11 right now and not shifted weight much all year, maybe at best 75/76.. when I ran my PBs I was 70ish and I've been under 70..

Our training group compared, the quick ones all under 70 kg and none that tall either

    I'm 5' 4" and 62 kg, whereas my lad is 5' 10" and a mere 58kg !!

A couple of years back I got down to 53 kg but that wasn't really sustainable - obviously.

What's with this mix of metric and imperial??? I'm 5'8" and 10st4 (ish). I eat like a horse!

(I have a bag strapped round my face filled with oats.....). My big weaknesses are Danish pastries and fried food...

Not a good time of year to lose any serious weight though Reg, as it messes up your immune system.

Talking of which, cycled in this morning and half-way through, once I'd woken up, I realised how little energy I had because of a head cold - my nose is a veritable snot factory!  Still - lovely morning for it!

I don't plan on dieting as such. For instance normally I have lunch at 10am and immediately have two doughnuts and half a packet of jaffa cakes/biscuits. However this week I am just having one doughnut. I'm also not going to keep any cake/biscuits in the house as I normally have tea and cake after dinner.

That should account for between 500-1000 calories a day  :D We'll see what difference that makes.

I like the mix of imperial and metric. I am slowly moving towards metric as I get older. I'll always stick with miles for running though.

I have a sore spot in my hamstring from yesterday so I think just a recovery run today and I'll start on some hamstring strengthening in a couple of days to try and make them a bit more resistant.

Not just about weight Reggie, you'd have to train like a standalone hard core runner i reckon. You have the shorter distance stuff, your XC shows that, and 5ks.
If you ditched the bike stuff, i'm sure you could get all your pbs down fairly easily (well, i say easily, by putting the big mileage in - if we can flippantly call that easy :) )

I'm a bit of a streak of piss at around 6ft 1 at 11 stone (70kg?) , couldn't really see any sort of drop beyond that without entering dodgy terrain!

Anyway, still have a little tickly throat, the last part of this cold, but thought i'd get the hill sesh i should have done last week in.

Previous version was 8x0.25m hills, this time 10x0.25m

Form, not pace.  Range wsa 1.35 to 1.41, not the steepest hill in history of course, but felt a decent tempo.

Must admit i did think after rep 1 i'd just do 8, but upon number 8 i thought i might as well do 10.
The original session was 7 years ago as part of this thread...slightly different reps and distance, but near enough the equivalent.

Comes out a long session, even with a cutdown 2.5mile warm up, as you have the 5miles of the reps and recoveries, and then the 2.5m run back.

Feels easier beforehand than say a 6.5m at 6 pace, or the faster tempos, but by  the time you've finished, you've had enough!

I think i saw 7m MP and 16x400 off 1min at 10k pace for next week. Clearly the latter was built towards a 10k prace that was coming up, but i'll probably do it.
I remember it sounding easy, but after so many reps it builds up and didn't feel it!

Reg - trying to stick to the regular 3 meals a day makes all the difference and cutting out most of the booze (although there won't be many big drinkers on here). Really hard though I agree..

Good hill session, hoping my hills will help on Saturday at the national 6 stage. Got first leg again so hopefully that will pull me around a bit quicker

Reg - even by my standards of cake and pastry eating, two doughnuts and half a packet of jaffa cakes is nver gonna be good! As for lunch at 10 - wtf???! :-)  I always feel like having my lunch early, but make do with a mid-morning snack and have lunch around 1, another snack at 4 then main meal around 8. I'm always hungry, but spacing it out helps!

Nice reps SG. My cold seems nearly gone too (fingers crossed) Long run this morning.

Lunch at 10 actually makes sense. I have breakfast about 6:30 and by 10 I've cycled to work and I'm hungry again. Also if I exercise at lunch then lunch has gone down in time. I can then eat a second lunch mid afternoon. Three meals a day doesn't work for me.

I reckon the second lunch will help reduce the snacking on crap. Yesterday I had just one doughnut and no other treats.

Nice repping SG, I think the weight will make that much difference. Partly because it's not going to fall off without an increase in mileage so it's not all just the weight, it's also the increase in running causing the weight loss.

What's lunch? Isn't that what posh ladies do?

I usually have my breakfast around 6/6.30am. Brew time is usually about 9.30 which is a bacon and sausage butty/bin lid/tea cake.
DINNER is usually about 12-12.30 which is a flapjack/cake. (training at dinner time? There's some cushy jobs out there)
    TEA TIME is around 7.30-8pm.
Only snack I usually have is a bowl of cereal 10 mins after my tea.

    Im about 11 stone and 5ft 10.
