My problem with Mother's Day is the fact that it seems (like so many things) to have gone into overkill. How people who have lost their mums or have really difficult relationships with them must feel I have no idea. All mothers are now perfect, apparently.

I would point out I do get on fine with mine but I'm not about to get her a card that says she's the best mum in the world or some other, gushy nonsense.
She would probably think I was taking the piss if I did!
Mine is dead, so I guess it saves me buying a card....
must admit I'd rather have mum around.
Mind you... i'm as cynical as she was, she used to say don't waste your money on a bloody card.
Same here, booktrunk. It's not a Clinton's Day. It's a remembering who brought you into the world, day. Most of them forfeit so much of their own existence for their offspring.
I might not always get on with my mum but we nearly lost her to salmonella, kidney failure and septicemia 4 weeks ago. I'm so grateful she pulled through.

I always do a card for Mother of Muttley on Mothers' Day. We're talking £2.50 plus the cost of a stamp, you bunch of tightwads! And a bunch of blooms. Why not? If it weren't for her I wouldn't be here so I'm grateful (even if you're not).
Agree that schmaltz is out though. My card this year thanked Mum for potty training me and explained how useful that has been over the years.
As a mum, I love Mother's Day. The hand-made cards and gifts are so sweet.
As a daughter, I fucking hate it. It's just another reminder that she's not here any more.

I had an Easter Egg hunt organised for me - last year's plastic eggs that the girls filled with Haribo and planted round the house for me to find (so they could share the sweets). Big A (age 7) made me 4 cards, including one with handmade flowers, little A (age 4) made me one and wrapped up her leftover Christmas sweets (slightly melted chocolate Freddo faces) all by herself.
I also got 3 bought cards, a bunch of flowers, a teddy, chocolates and a cushion with "I love my Mum" on it. Although they were all lovely, it's the made stuff that means the most.

Mother's Day was traditionally a religious festival which just goes to show how commerciality has taken over and the true meaning lost; much like Christmas!

Sort of. They were given the day off (typically the first Sunday in Lent) to worship at their local Parish Church which was better known as the Mother Church. This day was known as Mothering Sunday and has morphed into Mother's Day

If they make it an age limit instead is it any less arbitrary?
You could argue that age limits for child/adult etc are defined in law, but height isn't, and that accusing people of trying to cheat based on their physical appearance is potentially offensive...
I don't think they'll be giving children's menu to people up to 16/18 years old. More like 10 going by their height limit so not really legally defined.
