I've been out in Swinley Forest (Ascot) again today - it is melting fast out there, and even the ice on the pavements is starting to shift. I know it's a few miles away, but here's hoping it's not too different in Surrey!
I haven't been out for nearly 2 weeks now what with the snow and ice and then Christmas getting in the way !! Will be just happy to get round now. Hope your arm is ok now Lillias - do you know if training is on on Wednesday night ?
The thaw is definitely starting today, and I suspect all will be fine if we have the couple of days of 8-9 degrees that they are predicting for later in the week.
I was out today on Epsom Common and there was a lot less snow and ice than a few days ago, and most of the paths and tracks were very runnable. I know the Downs are a bit higher and a bit more exposed, but I'm starting to feel a lot more optimistic than I was this time yesterday after my run.
Maybe tomorrow afternoon I'll give the racecourse another recce and see how Ebbisham Lane is......
I was thinking that too until our Allsort run of yesterday - Ebbisham Lane was unpassable. But hopefully if the thaw does come it will be fine. My plan is to pop up Sat and have a little look.
Forgot about Allsort run yesterday as I lay in my pit I must get some practice in this week or else Sunday will be a disaster - twas a bit slippy last year if I remember rightly coming down that long road before getting back onto the Downs
Everything is looking a lot better after last night's rain. Looking forward to some reports back from the field. In particular the downhill road section and the left hand turn into Downsway Close (before you go into the alleyway and into the woods)
Popped up there today on my way home from parents. The Downsway bit is much better, as is Ebbisham. If this weather continues it should be safe and even good running weather for it by Sunday.
Could I say I am looking forward to this now? Is that wrong!?
From memory about 35% is actually off road (it might be a little bit less than that).
The hills are not steep. The only one worthy of any real note is Ebbisham Lane which is perfectly runnable but goes on for a bit. It does get a bit tough second time round (the run is two laps). There is a short patchs of about 300-400 metres which is likely to be fairly muddy. The rest will be fine.
I might have got a pass for this one as Toucs is still on enforced rest. could be fun after doing the Knacker Cracker the day before
I ran most of the course today in my trail shoes and didn't have any problems. There's a bit of ice around on the path by the pond area but the roads are all perfectly fine, including the Downsway. The ice is all melting fast, there's a lot of surface water about!
I'm doing Tanners as well - 'only' the 20 mile version
I have just got back from a run that covers about 3/4s of the course (including Ebbisham Lane and all round the racecourse), and I agree with Tiger - the course is runnable as it is, and with another day or two of temperatures above zero it will be even better.
Ebbisham Lane is fine (bit muddy and lots of water running down it), and most of the track around the back of the racecourse is either snow free, or barely covered with slushy stuff.
The only bit of the course that is a bit slippy still is the track between Downs Way Close and the back of the raceourse - this still has a reasonable covering of compressed snow and ice on it in bits, and is the only part of the run where I was glad I was wearing my Roclites.
Good news from all of you, thanks. I think we all agree if the current weather continues as forecast there'll be no problems. We try to dig out the very bottom of Ebbisham Lane a day or two before the race to make it more runnable. The officilal entry form describes the race as 25% off road
Had a little stroll from Downsway Close through the woods onto the uphill track (if you think it worse than Ebb La you are not alone). Also had look at the bottom of Ebb Lane which looks clear and runnable.
All looking good I'd say.
PS the Race Director rapped my knuckles. The fact the course is all on Public Rights of Way is definitely no coincidence, he planned it that way.

Thinking of an ED on this one.
Must be zero or close to zero slippery for me, would be my first race since I tore ligaments back in November, and ankles are now both delicate.
Hi Green Eyes - you helped me at the FLM 2009, even opened my gel!
It thawed a lot today, even the really stubborn stuff was turning to slush.
It should be fine for 2nd Jan (fingers crossed as I really want to do the Tanners the week after)

Happychap - Also doing Tanners 30
Snow & ice has mostly gone here & I`m about a hour away
Mr K
Love Tanners so much.
I'm doing Tanners as well - 'only' the 20 mile version
I'm not doing Tanners anything - in fact I don't know what it is
I find the uphill bit on the edge of the racecourse the worst bit - always struggle there.
Glad I could be of help at FLM last year Reikrabbit - maybe you could push me up the hill on Sunday
Lots do walk it. It's amazing for discovering new paths and suchlikes for alternative marathon training runs.
The Punchbowl is another nice one, just a bit further afield.
