MsE - What Poacher said. Have you posted a target time? Sorry I can't recall but judging by your training and posts I'm thinking you would like to run sub 3. I can't recall your marathon pb?? You've had a lot going on in the past year or so and I'm sure that takes it's toll but you're mentally and physically strong and I'm certain you will have a very good run.

Thanks, GM.  I am taking it easy.  PB is 2:58:55.  Looking to use this marathon as a way to boost fitness for a spring attempt at a new PB!

Thanks all, sorry I missed you OO and Poacher on course. Good running both of you. Likewise had a good experience of the event and nice for visiting marathoners to get a good experience. Think ill be ok, backed off when things started hurting and probably been relatively active at park with family this afternoon so hears hoping not too much stiffness. Will take some rest days and get ready for some easy paced trail runs to come. It's disappointing to underachieve, but there'll be other days.

mountain waffles = 2 waffles stacked with 3 scoops of ice cream (from a choice of flavours), two sauces and 3 toppings. most other days would considered glutinous ????

WDfDE - sounds like you took a very sensible approach under the circumstances. There will be plenty more opportunities in the future.

OO - great stuff given the last minute decision to take part.

Poacher - chapeau to you as well sir. Given the lack of training 3:15:xx is highly commendable.

Funny you should mention the Moldovan red as I bought a bottle of that as well as the white. Worth drinking for the experience, but I'm glad I only bought the one bottle.

The train set next to the Thames Trot course was my first thought reading PMJ's post. Amazing house if I remember correctly.

Have you got any Ultras planned over the winter? I'm tempted to have another crack at the Country to Capital - it was my first Ultra and a great lesson in how not to manage the pacing over 45 miles.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you MsE - sounds like you'd benefit from plenty of rest at this stage.

Impressive lumbar vertebrae count PMJ - amazed that no-one's spotted that before.

Very well done today Gehts. Good to hear positive feedback about the race as well.

Lorenzo - I did wonder how the wine would go down but the food sounded great. I'm more of a red man myself but I'm with you on NZ white.

MsE - Shame about the sniffles, hope that clears soon. Yes, I remember your sub 3 but couldn't quite recall the exact time. Berlin should be a great experience, I've heard nothing but positive things about it.

First double digit run for me today in a long while. 10 miles with a friend who did 23 in prep for Chicago. See marathon runners everywhere here getting ready for Jersey which is in 2 weeks and it's making me feel envious but I'll happily spectate and hope the conditions are good for both runners and spectators.

MsE - ignore the taper madness!
Poacher - nice scalp at parkrun. And an excellent time in Hull - what a result! Sounds like you had a cracking weekend.
Birch - pleased to hear you've ended your streak.
Lorenzo - nice run/bike combo. The rest of my Saturday was spent loading/driving/unloading a van, so not really free!
GM - no, I don't use an alarm clock. I don't think that would go down too well! It's amazing how your body gets into a routine and wakes up at the right time.
OO - well done yesterday - decent result given the far from ideal prep.
WD - sorry to hear you had a tough day in Hull. Hope the aches and pains don't last too long!
PMJ - belated birthday wishes. Hope you can get your back sorted OK.
    Jools - enjoy the taper!
GD - not long to go now!
5 recovery miles yesterday to bring up 58 for the week. 10 miles this morning with 2x3M tempo which turned out at 7:07, 6:48, 6:40, then 6:40, 6:40, 6:35.

PMJ - was the house with the train set near Henley? It sounds like a place one passes towards the end of the Thames Trot 50

Yes, that's the one. I run a lot on the Thames and really didn't notice until yesterday how different the bit upstream of Henley is. From London upstream it is all a clear river with a clear and well marked towpath on one or both sides. At Henley it is suddenly a really small track, well away from the river, that then disappears and is roads for a mile or so before rejoining and then is back to being a really nice path.

Poacher, why not come for the Derwentwater 10 in November, then we can have our 4th smack down.

  • Options

Never have I been so glad to say I will be abroad FOR THE WHOLE OF NOVEMBER. Losing gets to be a habit image

PMJ - you might enjoy the TT 50 - starts at Oxford, very rural, that bit by Henley is almost the only part of the route which isn't near water. Finish line is the bandstand by Henley station. There used to be a Thames Path Ultra from Reading to Shepperton, but the TT50 is nicer.

Lorenzo - no plans, but agree that the C2C is a good challenge. Last time I did it we started in what was almost a blizzard. Some counter-intuitive navigation in the first half, then the slog along the canal to Little Venice is a good place to make up time.

As for mountain waffles image sounds like death on a plate!

    well done the Hull trio

OO - fine result in view of less than optimum mara training

WD - well toughed out; wise move to ease back  . .

    Poacher - "Stopped to talk to a few people and came home in 3.15"    - that taking the p*ss . . . . .

A good session the treadie Abbers

Hope the MRI goes to plan GM - a good Parkrun thime nonetheless.

Looks like you're still squeezing in the training Lorenzo.  I like the sound of your end of run plan.

Must be a nightmare trying to avoid all those household colds MsE - nice 12 miler there and faster miles within. Still looking good.

Excellent Hull time 0053! And brilliant unexpected time too Poacher - maybe you could have got sub 3.15 without the chit chatimage!

A good looking 10 miler there Gul - all coming together nicely.

Went out for 15 miles on Saturday night taking in 11 miles of the Leicester Half marathon at a decent av pace of 7.23m/m. And 8 miles last night for a 50 mile week - my longest in 5 months. Even managed to haul my backside out this morning for a 5 miler to start the week off. Trying to fit them in while I can as Mrs KR is now doing a night school twice a week.

My above post seems to be a duplicate from a couple of days ago- not sure what happened there?

My legs are completely shot today- guess I'll have to take a day off. On my way to Greenwich though I'll be running round Greenwich part in the morning, at a snails pace.

Your back issue seems like a worry PMJ. Are they going to fuse 2 of the vertebrae?

The number of vertebrae is not an issue, the 6th is pretty much the same as numbers 1 to 5. Having 6 maybe not much of a help, the spine is supposed to curve a bit and mine curves more and common sense says the more bits you have, the more you can bend something, but it is really down to years of abuse and damage from life in general and running just means I have developed muscles and extra bits of bone to compensate so just need to undo that.

  • Options

OO - I am surprised you even contemplated running today and that you will be running tomorrow.  Be careful not to over do it. Remember the body needs recovery time.

KR - Good mileage and nice pacey 15 miler there.

Rest day in these parts today after my long run yesterday. image

Leslie - mara pace? I wish! All the best with your comeback.
Poacher - not tempted to nip back into the country for the Autumn Shakespeare? Not a great slogan for Stockport, how about: "Stockport is slightly less horrible than Hull"?
KR - some decent training going on there and morning runs too!
PMJ - what is the procedure they are proposing to do then?
GM - rest day - nice idea!
15 miles at a steady 7:58 m/m this morning starting at just the right side of 4am.

    .

It is called adjustment and is basically manipulation of the spine. In the past, I have seen an osteopath and he has "clicked my back out" and that was a big, one time thing and seemed to last me for the best part of a year. This seems to be less drastic but I am having it twice a week for 6 weeks. It is a quite fancy set-up with a bench that I lie on and the bench falls away from under me to stretch parts of the spine.

Sounds painful PMJ but best to get it sorted I'm sure.

You are probably right Gerard. Left leg is still a bit sore so may give it a miss.

Congrats on the 50 mile week KR, seems like you are ticking over nicely.

    Morning all,

Great performances at Hull from OO, Poacher & Woldsman - recover well, gents. A casual 3:15 is very impressive!

PMJ - belated happy birthday, and hope the planned work on the back sorts you out.

MsE - keep up the veggie intake and I'm sure you'll recover in time. The potential new family pet sounds very cute, but they take away even more of your time! We got a kitten in July, and while adorable, he seems to keep us occupied more than we had planned!

KR - good miles. Is there a race plan/target?

Gul - impressive run in the middle of the night. Can't comprehend how you get out at that time of day - I think my 6am runs at the weekends are early!

GM - nice parkrunning. Heading to your neck of the woods for a family holiday, but not until next May half term, although we'll be on Guernsey rather than Jersey. Might hop over on a boat one day though, to revisit some favourite places!

Just under 40 miles last week, including a "long run" of 13.5 which was very comfortable at just under 8mm pace. 6 easy yesterday, some kind of interval session on the cards for today.

  • Options

PMJ - sounds like torture or maybe an illusionist's stage show!
Abbers - sounds like training is going well.
Up early tomorrow, but no run planned. Catching a train at 5:19 and heading off to Leeds for a 2 day training course. Hope to check out the canal in the evening and again on Thursday morning.

Gul - Yes, I can imagine why the alarm clock wouldn't work but I can't comprehend how your body clock works. I've never been an early riser. Think the earliest I ever went out for a run was for a 6am half marathon start in South Africa in 2012. Felt like an outer body experience but when the sun rose above the mountains it was magic.Enjoy your work trip to Leeds, I've never been in Yorkshire.

Abbers - Have you been to Guernsey before? I've only been a few times and that was for work. I did manage to get out for a run when I was there a few weeks ago and was given and Island tour by a work colleague who is based there. Where are you staying, I'm presuming you have booked the trip already?? Please do drop me a line closer to the time if you do decide to pop over to Jersey. image

  • Options

Are you up yet Gul? Can't believe you've passed up the opportunity for a pre-train run.

Equally unbelievable is GM's admission that he's never been to God's own country. What's stopping you?!!

Hope OO recovers OK and that PMJ's back treatment works out OK.

Good to hear from you Abbers.

7 miles first thing today on one of my favourite midweek circuits through the woods. Almost headtorch conditions already.

  • Options

Gul - that 05:19 train shouldn't present a problem for someone like you! Hope the course is productive and you manage to get some running miles in.

GM - most of my CI trips have been to Jersey (both work and pleasure), but have been to Guernsey a couple of times, and even had a family holiday on Alderney when I was little. It's a bit of a family celebration as it's my F-I-L's 80th, so there's an extended group of 8 of us going out and already booked as a consequence to make sure we got what we wanted. Seems like a long way off to be making plans! I'll PM you nearer the time if we decide to have a day on the big island!

Lorenzo - as you say, won't be long until the headtorch needs to make an appearance. Anything earlier than about 6:30 and it's needed for a short while now. Juts don't like then carrying it for the rest of the run!

6 yesterday including 2x1 mile (6:28, 6:20) and 2x0.5 mile (3:00, 3:07). Thinking if I had 5 or 6 weeks until Salisbury rather than 2.5, I might get into reasonable shape!

  • Options

    Quiet on here today!

Lorenzo - Tbh I haven't been to many places in England. The list is short, Manchester, Blackpool, Birmingham, Rugby, Broadway in the Cotswolds, London, Oxford and that's probably about it, other than airport stops for connecting flights. Hopefully I can make a few trips across the water next year for some races.

OO - How's the leg today? I normally take at least 3 days if not a week after a marathon but know folk that hardly ever let up.

Abbers - Sounds like a fun trip planned. Nice mile reps. Any target in mind for the Salisbury race? I seem to recall that's one you have done before?

4 mile lunch run for me today. One mile w/up 7:30mm and 3 at 6:44mm. Felt a bit easier today, aerobically it felt comfortable and the legs didn't seem to mind the pace after a mile or so. Still lacking sharpness though and parkrun this Saturday should be fun trying to run 14 seconds or so quicker than last week.

    Morning All,

Usually taper nonsense going on. Did a 4 miler on Tuesday, supposed to be nice and easy with 2 miles at MP in the middle. Executed it OK but didn't feel good.

Was a bit stressed after walking home for 2 miles from the station after discovering my mountain bike had been nicked. Ruined the run and killed my confidence. Real shame, it was a 6 year old Specialised Hardrock Sport with disc brakes. Started to look a bit tired but it was a nice machine. Thief got lucky with the combi-lock, or just cut through it. Will get a D-lock for the next one.

Anyway, at least I get to go bike shopping!

Final session is tonight, I'll do that at the track. Just an easy paced 3 miler with some strides in the middle mile for sharpness.

Question: What's the form at airports with regards to energy gels and Vaseline? (now there's a movie!!) Ideally I also want to take some Blokk carb sweets and some biscuits for the morning of the race.
Will they let me have them in my hand luggage? I wasn't going to put any baggage in the hold.  Berlin is my first run travelling by aircraft, Paris was on Eurostar.

    Cheers

    GD

  • Options

I don't think gels can go in hand luggage but haven't checked the regs recently - I tend to put them in my hold baggage.  Not that that is very helpful to you!

G-dawg I suspect if they find gels in hand luggage in these uncertain times you will get the rubber glove treatment so I wouldn't image

5 easy the last 3 days all seems ok just a case of going too far too soon last week even if it was all easy image The doms was a warning to me and I didn't take it seriously enough !

Looks like a good block of training & reps Abbers.Only got an Autumn half mara planned.

I bet you could have squeezed in a run before that 5.19am train Gulimage Hope the canal was suitable in Leeds fro your running, a good way in an unfamiliar place as you can;t get lost.

A good lunchtime run / splits GM, good luck with your Parkrun.

Bad news on the bike G-Dawg, have you put a picture out on social media? Good question about the gels etc in hand luggage, I would check with your airline.

Just had a 6 day consecutive running streak, which feels weird. Just trying to get them in while I can. Might have to do my long run late on Friday night as I'm out all day at Old Trafford on Saturday.

  • Options

G-Dawg - That is a real shame re your bike. Not long now until Berlin! As far as I am aware, gels are liquids and subject to the 100ml rule but gels are less than 100ml so ok as long as all liquids fit in one of those clear bags.  Any running product that is anyway liquid, gel or cream like that is over 100ml will be confiscated. Alternative is to buy gels at Expo and Berlin expo is meant to be great but brand/flavour may not be your usual.  Other alternative is to check what Berlin is providing this year in addition to water on the course.

Leslie - Build it back up, patience is the name of the game however frustrating that may be.

KR - Enjoy the game! Should be a cracker. I'm a red and not an ideal starts for both our respective teams but lets hope it's entertaining if anything.

5k easy pace lunch run today. It's hotting up again and it's meant to be 24c on Saturday. Wohoo, might just squeeze another beach bbq in this year after all.image

  • Options

GM - the Salisbury Half took a sabbatical last year and is back with a new, flatter 2 lap route. Now starts in the city centre, heads west towards Wilton and then back into the city through the cathedral close. Rinse & repeat. Should be quick, although there's a stretch of a couple of miles on each lap that could be quite exposed if it's wet/windy. The target is the same as always, still after the yet-to-be-broken sub-90. Not sure I'm in that kind of shape though, so expect another in the 1.31.xx to 1.34.xx collection is more likely. This time though, I'd be relatively happy with that rather than disappointed! Enjoy the autumnal sunshine!

GD - sorry to hear about your bike. There are some to55ers about. Sounds like others have sage advice on your flying issues.

Leslie - I know it can be frustrating, but as GM says, building back up slowly is the way forward. Patience...

KR - enjoy the footy! The round ball game's not really my bag, but love the opportunity to go to live sport of pretty much any description. Good week's training by the sounds of it.

7 miles at lunch including a 5 mile tempo section at something around HMP. Came out at 34:37, so that's about 6:55/6mm which is about where I want to be.
