Darrell.a turbo is a training thing that lets you ride your bike indoors,a bit like a treadmill for your bike.........they sell them on wiggle if you want to take a look.................
I have managed without one because I know I would get bored and I also use my hybrid to ride out of doors in the crap weather..carefully
Hey all Another lurking newbie here - also signed up for Regensburg - very much with the aim for getting to the end in less than the magic 16 hours! Not that fit and def not fast in any discipline so will be following either the Fink get-round or possibly intermediate programme starting in January For now just enjoying getting into training with some Christmas food thrown in as I think it will be a long haul 7 months... Looking forward to hearing how everyone else is getting on!
How is everyone approaching their bike training this winter? I don't fancy taking the road bike out on the icy road and then regretting it later! Any tips on tyres for the winter would be good.
Hi Kizzi and well done Aaran I tend to leave my race bikes in the dry and warm and get out on my fixed Wheel fitted with Continental Gatorskins theses r seem to handle all the cr@p on the road if its icy I get off road on my MTB imho its not worth the risk riding a road bike if its icy one fall and that could be your collarbone gone and your ironman out the window before you even got started
Just cracking some unstructured stuff up to the new year lots of walking on the moors, trail runs, and MTBing, not starting structured IM Training for Wales until 28th March going for 6 weeks base /9 weeks build and 9 weeks peak as I have a prety good endurance base and found myself peaking for Outlaw about a month to early this year also got to get training and running the Grizzly out of the way.
got our local training group Xmas Tri this saturday that sea is going to be well chilled
some really good reading but if you cant be bothered it contains probably the best tip about training for iron man ever
"endurance training is exactly like turning a Styrofoam cup inside out. So long as you take it slowly you'll be able to do it. Try to rush things and - rip - you'll tear the cup. You are the cup"
Take it slow and steady we have a long way till race day
Hi all. another 1 for IM Wales. This year was my first for tri's. Was entered for IM UK but had to pull out in April with a knee problem, had 3 month complete rest then did the cowman middle instead. since spent another few months getting the knee fixed. I can vouch for what RBM says, I was training too much, too hard, too soon and realised it too late. Got BeIron fit and looking forward to getting on with it.
Another pre dawn bike ride d & d, last ride for two weeks as off to the UK tomorrow. Was cold by Dubai standards about 12C, tights, two layers weather!
Should be swim at lunchtime but still have slight head cold but getting better, so probably a trot. Will try and swim at least once a week while in UK but might not happen. Last nights intervals were all sub 4 min K's so speed is still OK, I have a lot of races in January / February.
Gotta love IMTALK Admirral Rose gets a mention this week, and the peeing on the bike episode was a scream I always have some of these on my MP3 for long runs also
Going across to frankfurt at the end of july,Done a few marathons and also got a place in next years london marathon. Did my 1st triathlon in september.Just planning on building a good base over the next couple of months before stepping my training up at the beginning of march.
Hi silverback, I'll be doing very similar to yourself then - July IM and London marathon! How're you planning your IM prep with regards ensuring your running for April, yet still survive the bike??
Just read through Coach Gordo's Frour Pillars, and I found it quite heartening. I love the long slow training, but don't really enjoy the speed work - even though I am better at the fast stuff (my 10k pb is much better than my marathon pb, relatively as well as literally.)
I really liked the bit about IronSpeed. Thanks for the link RBM.
This week hasn't gone according to plan, was hoping to get on the bike more and get a swim in but work and whatever got in the way, oh well, loads of time yet! Have run 30 odd miles though.
had 3 pints of bitter last night and woke up at 6am with the hangover from hell I could have understood it if i was piling em down my neck, woke up to lots of snow and ice the Xmas tri was cancelled so I took the dogs on a hike over the bridal ways to the moor for a couple of hours to try and clear my head then spent the afternoon servicing my MTB as we have got a group MTB ride tomorrow morning.
Had a lovely 5 mile run this morning in the snow and then went to a swim clinic. I have always thought of myself as a decent swimmer. I'm not, I'm crap!!! Long run tomorrow, looking forward to it, I like running in the snow.

Have fun with the road bike, I bought mine in the summer and LOVE it

Or alternatively emigrate and avoid UK winters, perversely I use a turbo in the summer to avoid the heat.
Intervals with running club tonight, swim session binned as have slight head cold. Flying to UK on Friday just in time for the next bout of snow.
Warm Dave you are having a larf!

I ripped on Monday ......
I agree about peaking too early....
Last year I started running out of mojo about May / June time, just when I needed to be going for it.....
I am trying to go easy at the moment, but its hard as I just wanna get going!!!

has some good IM Athelete/age grouper interviews
Day off training today as feel a bit under the weather Cant put my finger on it exactly but my body is definitely trying to tell me something!
Planning on a long slow build up to next summer- anything else and I'll definitely rip
Another IM virgin here.

In what way are you running them odd, madalot?
In my very limited triathlon experience, my run in races is very odd.
I have just uploaded my 10wk base training plan to my blog for those that are interested
http://wildwill-xhog.blogspot.com/2010/12/base-training-training-programme.html
Signed up for outlaw as my first IM and cant wait
50 mins on turbo followed by a quick trot round the blocks just to see how my legs were feeling.
Tiago, if you'd seen me run you would understand
I use my program as a wish list, as I get motivated / pissed off when I miss things so I make an effort for the next day...
its apparently not the best way but hey ho.....
I'm not, I'm crap!!!
Long run tomorrow, looking forward to it, I like running in the snow.
