Have until Saturday to decide over pulling out or not and claiming £145 back image

Swimming - fastest I have ever been, though haven't done any endurance stuff so may ache after the first half an hour. Been swimming with a pull bouy for every single swim though for 8 weeks now so have arms like Andy Potts* Realised this morning that kicking isn't too painful though

    *probably more like Pol Pot

Biking - fastest I have ever been, but haven't done any proper bike training for 2 weeks other than a very painful 2.5 hours 9 days ago. Have only been over 80 miles once and nowhere near race pace. Will try a turbo tonight but currently have a lot of ITB related knee pain after this morning's 12 mile commute so will have to see what it's like at harder effort

Running - Not ran properly for 8 weeks now, have pulled out of races left, right and centre due to a badly sprained ankle. Ankle is painful even when sitting at the desk. Have ran 4 times on the anti-gravity treadmill at 80-85% body weight, which has been ok on the ankle but painful on the knee. Tried 'jogging' 50 metres across a football pitch and was reduced to a limp after 5 metres though because of ankle pain

F**K IT... IM DOING IT!!! image

GB dont want to put a downer on your admirable fighting spirit but cycling 112 and running 26.2 on a dodgy ankle which is hurting sitting at a desk is asking for long term trouble unless you are prepared to pull the race at the first sign of serious trouble

I am the last person to spout about training whilst carrying injuries but mate i would take the ??145 get sorted and come and kick everyones arse at the next pirate championships

Sorry Just my opinion see you on July 1st

The ankle isn't a pain when cycling at all... though it did lead to getting ITB problems on the bike. If I can get off the bike after 112 miles with no serious knee issues then I will be happy to walk the marathon if necessary image

  • Options

GB: Only you know how bad your knee is so only you can decide.

I cycled at dawn for 75mins over the sand dunes and ran for a hour at lunch, please let the taper start soon I'm getting tired.

If I had 30 years of experience as an Orthopaedic Consultant, I might have more appropriate language to describe your situation, GB. But since I haven't, I'll just say it sounds like you're broken, mate. There are probably 50+ iron-distance events in Europe every year, and you have a lot of years ahead of you. Might be something you could put off until later this summer... spring 13????

How do people usually approach a course recce? Was thinking of going to have a look at the outlaw bike course this weekend but being completely unfamiliar with the roads and not haveing a garmin i was wondering how people usually went about it?

Got a long ride planned for the weekend and was either hoping for a recce or a sportive. Anyone doing any sportives next weekend that arent toooo far from the midlands?

  • Options

I guess a long ride on Saturday is the only way I will really know. 80 miles or so hopefully and then make my decision on Saturday afternoon

  • Options

Doing the same Saturday clincher ride. Difference is, I doubt if I will come back again for another go another year.

I hope it goes really well for you lads. I took a chance and booked my ferry yesterday as it was going to be more expensive the longer I left it.

However, £270 poorer, I awoke this morning to backache as well as not knowing how my achilles will stand the test.

I went to a chiropractor who relieved me of a further £30. He played about with my neck behind my ear and told me that a lot of achilles injury patients have the same neck problem. 'Oh the neck bone is connected to...........(the achilles?)'

Don't know the outcome as I'm still holding back from running on it, but he told me to get out and test it. So I'm going running with the club on Thursday (first time in weeks), and if that goes well I'm going with them to the Stranraer HM on Saturday.

Make or break, but I'll still be at Outlaw in some capacity regardless.

100m for me on the bike this morning, as I had to pull out of a sportive on Sunday to look after the kids. Took about 6 hrs 45 mins, but didn't really push the pace much. Drank less than 1ltr, which I was really surprised at considering the sun was out for much of it (although it was alot cooler than the weekend).

Did plan on running a few miles after to test the legs, but the sofa beckoned. image

Good luck to those 'testing' their legs on Sat. Hope all goes well.

A summary of how things have been going for me:

Swim - Been going well in the pool, but limited to approx 2.7k a session. But did do an easy 4.4k in the pool on Thursday (went thru 3.8k in 1:09).
Only did first OW swim last week so I'm a month behind schedule there, but felt ok in the wetsuit and the swim has always the least of my worries.

Bike - Managed four 100+ mile rides and three 90+ rides none of which have been fast or particularly enjoyable. I set pb's at 10 mile TT tho. Probably averaged about 130 mpw, (longest week 260 miles). Not confident I can hit target tho, hoping for that race day extra something.

Run - Quietly confident with my run, My endurance is good, five 20+ mile runs and four 19+ mile runs all of which have been comfortable. Longest runs; "distance" 23.09 miles or a 4 hour "time on feet" 21 mile mountain run. I've also got some speed, fastest 5k in 4 years.

Bricks - Done some really nice runs off the bike, no real problems there. I did The Silent Assassins DIY Half IM and had a good day there. A couple of minutes over 5 hours with no real problems and a very solid run.

I have lost a bit of focus in the last week or so, I just really want to get it over and done with now. I slight case of CBA brought on by being constantly tired, I've had some proper rest days and have come back fresh but then it catches up with me again quite quickly, Am I possibly on the brink of overtraining?

    Overall -
    Swim . image

    Bike .? imageimageimageimage?

not really got started but nor did i for IM Wales and i got a PB if i can get 2 hour long sea swims in over the next few weeks i will be happy

    Bike

Longest distance 116 miles lots of 3-4 hour quality rides and felt strong on the Slateman so not to worried got to get out on my TT bike from now on though as it hasnt turned a wheel since Wales the spoilt lazy cosseted bugger image

    Run

Not done half as much as usual but all my long runs i have been quality stuff

So far happy with where i am especially after the time out for injuries from crashes early on

All in all probably done 60% of what i would normally do but still happy as it looks like i will get to the start line in one piece which i am sure GB VTd et all sould give their hind teeth for

    Me!

Sorry Orca hope i havent upped the demorslising
  • Options

    Yes. Totally. Thank you, Orca

Longest swim I've done 3.8K. Twice. Done a couple of 3Ks but the rest of my swimming has been 45 min sessions and I'm a slow swimmer.

Longest bike I've done is 95. And I've done that once. I've done 3 bikes over 75 miles. That's it.

Longest run I've done is 15. Again. Once. I'm regularly doing 12 / 13 milers, but nothing really more than that.

I actually proper laughed out loud reading Marshallini's post.

Edited because I'm sure I've done the swim distance twice this year, not once. Phew.

  • Options

Thanks Holly & SlowEngineer, that makes me feel a little better.

RBM, you didn't help a bit!!!

Swim: Longest continuous swim is a 3km one but my swim sessions are regular as I swim with a masters club three times a week so I'm not worried about the swim.

Bike: Not going particularly well. Time trials are more or less on par with last year but last year I had 6 weeks more to go to improve. Longest bike has been under 5.5 hours and I covered less than 120km because the wind was very strong, I was in Fuertaventura. Hopeing to fit 3 rides of about 100miles between now and taper time and if they go OK I'll be all right.

Run: Similar to Holly, nothing longer than 15miles. Done that about twice. Again, if I can get 3 more runs between 16 and 18miles, I'll get through.

Have to say I'm worried though!

My training is nowhere near Marshallinis ..

but its not supposed to be so I refuse to be worried image

  • Options

If I'd done as much training as Marshallini I'd probably be broken!

Swim shouldn't be a problem; bike will hurt a lot and will be what it will be; run will most likely be a slow run/walk - as long as I get off the bike within the cutoff.

I will at various stages on race day, particularly on the bike, curse myself for not doing more.

I'll have only myself to blame for being a lazy, fair-weather triathlete image

What's your target time marshallini? Sounds like some really good training to say the least, good work!!
  • Options

I reckon he'll finish 3 hours before he starts image

I've done less training this year than any other - especially the swimming where I have hardly done anythingimage

I'm hoping to survive the swim and then be ok on the bike and a run /walk to finish...hoping being the main word!

It'll be a great day image

Meldy i refuse to be worried by you refusing to be worriedimage

Seriously folks Meldy is right ignore what everybody else has done accept what you have done to date unless you have done nowt you have probably done enough to get round how messy it gets getting to the finish line depends on how much of your training plan you could or couldnt be arsed to do but with a bit of spirit and positive mental attitude we will all cross that line in July image

    Overall target is Sub 11.

    intermediate targets are;

    Swim - 1:06:30 (1:45/100m)
    Bike - 5:59:59 (18.67 mph ave)
    Run - 3:29:36 (8:00 m/m ave)

Add them together plus transitions that would be round about 10:45:00, so a little room for manoever, but like I say I'm not confident I can bring the bike in at 6 hrs.

We'll just have to see on July 1st.

First run in weeks, a 4.5 mile trail run following my 2.5 k swim.

Physio straight after and an ice bath, just. No pain, no bad reaction, just complete bliss to be running again. I love running!!!!

Marshallini nice one i managed 11:12 at my last Outlaw in 2010 and initially was training for sub 11 pre crashes and injuries image its a really fast course but now this yesr a sub 12 is probably more realistic for me
