I'm a swimmer and butterfly is my stroke. I don't find it exhausting. To me a "swimmer" is someone who is able to swim all four strokes. I would however, never belittle a triathlete who cannot swim fly (and not just because they all overtake me on the bike part anyway!) It would be ludicrous for me to suggest that triathletes who can't swim fly are not "real" swimmers and therefore should not compete in tris. My point is that similarly, I think that fast marathoners should not belittle the slower ones. Truce?
Ah, so I'm not a swimmer because I can't swim breaststroke. Glad to know that. I thought I was a swimmer because I swim, like I'm a runner because I run and so on and so forth. But no, in order to be a swimmer I have to be able to swim all 'four' strokes. Funny cos I thought there were more than four strokes.
Dave, if you can give me a valid reason why someone's appeareance has anything to do with running then I''d say you have a valid point. Otherwise find something more useful to contribute.
Zaftig - it's very interesting to hear the view from the very back of the field. I imagined those were probably the very things that migt sap every last bit of enthusiasm you started out with.
Anyway excess body weight is never attractive. Why do you think we are programmed to seek out non fat people (unless we are fat ourselves, so therefore have to seek someone in the same league as us).
Blame nature if you want to blame anyone for humans seeing Fattie McVities as not as attractive as slim people.
Are you talking about societal programming or evolutionary programming here?
Evolutionarily speaking - its actually supposed to be the more rotund of people who would survive better as they hold on to fat more meaning theyre able to survive between meals longer. Of course in the western world most folk (given this is a running forum - it probably doesnt apply so much here) dont do enough exercise and thus can get pretty big. Which is sort of why in some places in the third world fat is seen as attractive - as a sign of wealth.

I can ONLY swim breaststroke. Lucky I'm just a runner...
Perhaps you have slipped into a parallel universe when 25 stone munters who take 8 hours for a marathon are declared the winners ?
"25 stone munters"

i did say it was a parallel universe...............
and a Munter is.......................
Oh right, funny though when she was fat she was quite pretty, so the assumption is that anyone at 25 stone is ugly?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder (and I didn't mention gender.)
Each to their own
Extremes of slim or fat are both as Ugly
I'm sure Cath Wiggins fancies Brad as much as Phil Vickery fancies Fern ?
Gender is hardly important when you've just used the term "munter".
see, she was much better looking as a Fatty
Fern Britton is 55 FFS - what do you expect her to look like?
I fact Toyah is on brekkie TV and she has just said she is 55, and she still does it for me
Yes but Toyah, by her own admission, has had "work" done.
