Barley - can confirm when Slacker and I drove the year after you guys raced it was 14 ish hrs non stop. It's also not cheap as there are lots of toll roads.
We're mulling over the options at present and hoping for an 11th hour reprieve.
I think id enjoy the drive if I had a nice car and could spread it over a few days but the costs and practicality are a bit prohibitive. Worst case scenario option really.
Nice was easy to get to, the airports only a 10 min taxi ride from Ibis and transition.
Pretty sure we'll get there with the airline, just whether we end up sitting in the airport half the day.
We did look at deferral options but that closed on 29 April. Will see what travel insurance might cover costs wise but, as Barley/Little Sis say, there's not much that can be done. Certainly not without throwing time and money at it. I also have commitments at home on Weds. Oh well. They might call it off yet. We might be the lucky 50%. Will have to wait and see.
This might sound, and may well be a silly suggestion but surely some flights will go via Chermany and land in Northern Italy, which is a stones throw from Nice? Or doesn't it work like that.
More beer is always a good solution but I quite like the sound of the thermonuclear bang at Scouse international. Take me to Nice or I blow!
Driving does look like it could be a chore, probably 14 hours+ (without breaks) for me?
Not train looks so favourable either?
I think ill wait and see what the effects of the strike are Tuesday/Wednesday, should be able to see it/what time the scheduled BA flight leaves Gatwick both days.
The article says there is a commitment to 50% service, im kind of hoping with it being mid week and not 'holidays' that the flights will just be delayed a few hours.
Will be watching closely.
I think this is quite likely .... What will be , will be ..
Barley.french trains workers are entering their second week of strikes..not the best option either
I'm rather more than a tad undertrained for a Park run at the mo!
With regard to the trains it's just the 'conductors' who are on strike and not the train drivers this time. Which, in reality, means you can board the train without a ticket and get there without having to pay anything! Friends have just travelled from Paris to the Ardeche for £12.00 because of the 'strike'!
Me and the missus are now thinking of a hire car from Calais and driving down. Sometimes it's not a bad thing having no driving license - means I can sleep the whole way
With regards to travel i will turn up at Bristol airport hopefully at some point they will put me on a plane i will count lying on an airport floor waiting as taper rest if there are no flights i will go home and sulk its totally out of my hands so no use fretting over it
BA say will update on next days flights at 13:00 GMT. Will look on Wednesday and if flight is cancelled will probably drive on Thursday back on Tuesday.
Would have room for one more in this event, but will not know until know flight position. I live near Woking if that would be of any use.
probably sod all I can do about it either Dave.... about to jump on a flight to Asia*, so out of the country and timezone until a few hours before I jump on a plane to Nice... so not going to have much chance to organise anything anyway!
* Yes, I know its piss poor scheduling.... so I'm just treating it as temperature acclimatisation!
lets be honest.... its all prep for an Ironman on my 100th birthday

Feck.
I've just done an Oly and held back quite a lot.
Do you mean I could have really gone for it?
Seriously, what a PITA....

Im going with the Little Sister approach, what will be will be.
yep... will take a crafty look at ferry options for the car as well... if we end up doing that, anyone fancy sharing costs? (fuel, ferry and tolls)
I think Barley is right.........you will all gte your flights but you might have to spend a few hours sitting around bored at teh airport first
Well i can't find my passport either, think there is a message trying to get through?
No passport
No bike
ATC strike
Rail Strike

Oh and I'll be leaving the Ardeche on Friday morning for the three hour drive to Nice!
Weather here remains in the high 30 degrees C!
Big respect if you pull this off Siggy!
Just looked at Eurotunnel, and its about £170 return... so add about £100 for fuel and £100 for tolls... its not a cheap option!
quite... although i'd only look at this option if my flight was getting cancelled, and I therefore was due a full refund.
Last decent bike sesh and i was flying

So travel position less than perfect.
