Excellent thread here! Just read the post race reports but it sounded brill/horrible. I originate from round there so maybe I should do it next year!!??
Hipps - you're an inspiration - you made me weeping with you reading your report. Very very well done, don't ever knock yourself - you're a star!!
Tim I dont think there was an 'easy' route, however it was made easier by our very own bog trotter who cleared a pathway through like a bulldozer with a twin exhaust!
TopSec, your picture suggests you'd be a natural for this event - four feet would definitely be better than two. Talking of pictures - Caspar what IS your picture? Am I being a bit slow? It looks to me to be either a mountain (one you're planning to run up?) or the face of a very wizened mummified man (how you'll be when you've run up it?)
when your rose tinted glasses kick in hippo you be back next year, and whilst you may feeling fatigued the fact is that you were still in front of many people
When we met up you had made considerable progress. I had passed a lot of people way behind who had started at the same time so there is a lot to be positive about.
You are right about Morder -who needs NewZealand when we have our very own middle earth!
Thanks for the enquiry about the legs Loz - just the right quad is really sore - probably a bit too over-enthusiastic scuttling down the hills! How are yours? Now know how my elderly parents feel getting up and down stairs etc...Still, it feels well worth a bit of limping now to have taken part on the day. Full of admiration for those who ran/biked today - all I managed was a slow stagger down to the swimming baths and back...
Casper, being in front for a while was rather fun as it was really only on the easily-navigable bits. I eventually got passed by three people before the Lion Inn but they were all quite fast and after a chat disappeared into the distance. So I was on my own again for most of the first stretch of bog but again it was easy to navigate. I had recced a bit of it at Easter so at least the squelchiness was not too much of a surprise (though I think it went on for many more miles than most of us expected!) After Hamer there were a handful of us going at similar speed so it got quite sociable and those who had done it before could give a pointer on where to go next
My legs aren't too bad thanks Sluggie, little jog later I think. It's the criss-cross grazes on the back that have got me puzzled. I can't remember my rucksack rubbing that much. I look like I've been fighting!
P.S. do you think that your aversion to rice pud (and seemingly any other food at all) might have contributed to your emotional and physical state. I understand how you feel but surely you needed to take on some energy on the way around?
Been through that before-kid in my class at school called Caspar. I almost thought of having an extra helping of rice pud cos I knew hippos were allergic to it and it would only have gone to waste...

A VERY provisional maybe!
I am doing this event in august which is why I am building up my endurance with 'shorter'(... er hum) events like the Lyke Wake
sorry

How are your legs Sluggie? You did extremely well.
The main reason why I also stopped at 30 whereas I may have continued on another day, all be it in agony.
my knee is completely fine today (well lets see after I've been to the gym)
Sluggie how did it feel being the front runner? Would have een quite intimidating accross the bogs
Led this race for 2 seconds at 4.40 am!

it would take a HELL of a lot to make me contemplate that ravine again
however,I did sort of work out that i should have riun a bit more, and where i would do it
Oh, and my parents would have not to be told about it
i have to do Sunday
I cant keep DNF ultras

Have you many of these types of events?
Bog Trotter already exists - any suggestions?
Scouring race lists for trail races now though maybe not as long as this!

You are amazing.
Nuff said......

iwas SO traumatised by the sight of the pouddin that it upset me, and i couldnt walk properly
(ok, i hardly ate a thing, i know, I know)
I wish I had bothered to have a forum nickname.
Loz- are you sure Tim wasnt grabbing a piggy back over the bogs when you weren't looking, would also explain his legs being cleaner than yours!

Hippo shudders at the memory of being covered in tapioca upon leaving her last but one job
