LMH - you're spot on about Mr B needing % of a subject for his degree. Will go and look it up and report back.
Shades - very wise decision re Faversham. A hill with an injury is a tall order.
SiJ - smiled when I saw your note about the naughty step - brings back memories of 10 years ago.
HY4 - you feeling a bit better today? Missed that TV programme - double drat!
Thanks very much for best wishes for Flossette. Have just phoned in to see how she is going and with a bit of TLC, she should make the day's rehearsals and tonight's concert in Sturminster Newton. Have never gone into Sturminster Newton before, so this is a first. In September, she has been asked to audition for both main Youth Orchestras plus she starts her GCSE courses - can see it's going to be amazing fun in our household for next two years. Will make enquiries tonight of the actual audition date because it's got to be any date in September but 27th.
Yours truly has woken up with a slightly raised RHR, prickly throat, nose and a little sniffle (nothing serious) - looks like more strengthening and stretching today. Will check RHR again tomorrow and this is probably due to getting a bit chilled on the bike on Monday afternoon.
So much to say I don't know where to begin, so I'll cut most of it out! Running going reasonably well. Went on a 6 mile run yesterday but getting home realised I was extremely wheezy and in need of an inhaler. Never happens on the treadmill and always happens outside! I'm trying not to let it put me off, but breathing difficulties can be very scary! Mr LB put on our travel insurance that I don't take steroid inhalers (and I do) so I hope nothing goes wrong abroad because he was too lazy to check with me. I held up my purple one and said "what the hell do you think THIS is"???
Big ballet show was last night. It was WAY too long (over 3.5 HOURS!) but very enjoyable. My girls were stars but it was a VERY stressful couple of days. DG (and all other ballet mums) will know EXACTLY what I've been doing for the past few days...
Last day of school today. Just packing and faffing really. Houseguests still with us.
Mr Bump - great news that you're thinking about your career options. If history is what you're interested in then it will come across in teaching. You can only really get the most from a subject if you really like it, I think.
Shades - another DNS. I think I might just be coming out in sympathy with YOU with my achilles! Mine are certainly not getting any worse though and I'm doing loads of stretching.
BBS - I read a book once that said "nobody ever said on their deathbed I wish I spent more time in the office".... I hope you get some relief from all the pressure soon and my thoughts are with you over your friend. Totally awful thing to happen.
Flossie - Glad to hear Flossette is coping better today. Hope the painkillers mean she can do the concert tonight, but she sounds like a determined young lady, so I'm sure she will! Hope your symptoms go away again quickly.
Mr B - The % thing for PGCEs does depend on which subject you want to teach. Mr DG is a lecturer on PGCE RE course. He says History PGCE fills up fast and places usually go to people with good History degrees. RE however will take people with a wide range of backgrounds and degrees as long as they show committment to teaching RE - which these days is more about social cohesion - getting people to understand why people believe/act in certain ways rather than instructing people in any one religion. The other key thing they want for PGCEs is experience in school. Many schools though have 'humanities' departments so you end up teaching History, geography and RE whichever one you train in! The sad fact also is with the push these days for diplomas and vocational training pupils have very little real choice at GCSE (often comes down to only 1 or 2 free choices) and history and geography are becoming more and more sidelined as GCSE subjects.
Sorry if that sounds pessimistic, but better to be prepared. Shortage subjects like Maths and English you can do 2 year 'conversion' PGCEs too. By the time you would be qualified as a teacher though, the whole situation could have changed again completely as we'll probably have a new government by then!
SiJ - I'm glad mine aren't toddlers anymore!!
LB - Glad the show was good. I'm sure your girls were both stars I've got 4 nights of it to look forward to in November (plus all the rehearsals!!).
Shades - sorry your achilles is playing up again. Probably wise to DNS.
Just to let you know i'm alive. Down in Sunny devon at the parents. Dad's new homehub is refusing to connect wirelessly so i'm running a LAN connection instead so there will be farless internet access than usual, well unless i get a bloody great big LAN cable that stretches to my bedroom.
LB - lovely to hear your little girls were absolute stars at the show. School finishes today for you, so you can start to relax and only one more night's sleep with houseguests. Flossette has just rung me to say that she's going to dig her heels in and cope - bless her.
DG - Flossette seems to be coping quite well, thanks.
LMH and Mr Bump - students considering becoming teachers are currently advised that their degree must be in a relevant subject at no less than 50% of entire points, so effectively doing half English and half History would be absolutely brilliant on the points side. This advice was given by OU, Southampton University and www.tda.gov.uk. However, on a cautionary note, the OU also offered that it is probably safer to have 2/3rds of the points in your specialist subject because they recently had a student whose university insisted that she didn't have enough level 3 points in that subject in her degree and found herself doing another year's courses. Specialist subjects of Maths, Science, ICT, Design & Technology, Modern Languages, Music and RE are showing up as favoured at this present moment in time. Hope this helps.
Keith - well done for getting in on the LAN.
Chiropractor appointment for Flossette on Saturday - she's got to be better by next Thursday, she's flying to see family in Gibraltar. Everything crossed, please.
SiJ - it will get easier as they get older I promise
LB - our annual travel insurance didn't cost any extra because of OH using inhalers. Their criteria for charging more seemed to be hospital admission due to asthma in the last 3 years or need for nebuliser in the last 3 years.
LMH - well done on another cracking swim this morning - that's 2 miles!!! Oooerrr...Prague tickets arrived....that is SO exciting. Am feeling nervous for you already. Can we watch you compete on TV? Feel much better than earlier thanks, but then have told myself 'I feel much better' a lot this morning. Re: the teaching thing - you are most welcome, thankyou. Really looking forward to starting studying again with excited anticipation this time - a really good feeling.
I don't think it will be televised Flossie - unless I feature on one of those comedy out-take programmes - but I shall let you know if I find out differently. Can't believe how nervous I am - I really need to take myself in hand and sort my head out! Glad you're feeling better - you could always swim again? It's one I do with a raised RHR, just a gentle 'distance' swim though - no sprints or drills.
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.
Hello Madame Shades if you're there, or anyone else in the know .
I'm using a Shades schedule and my 20-miler falls on the day I've got a half marathon. Should I switch my 20 to a more convenient time or top-up the half a day or so after it?
LB - our annual travel insurance didn't cost any extra because of OH using inhalers. Their criteria for charging more seemed to be hospital admission due to asthma in the last 3 years or need for nebuliser in the last 3 years.
I haven't been nebulised or had a hospital admission due to asthma in the last three years but I have claimed on travel insurance as I had a seizure following an anaphylactic shock in Spain (got pissed and ate nuts)
so they load our travel insurance because they've forked out €3000 for me already. It's not a big increase (about six quid)
Just been to school. Miss LB's white Calvin Klein jacket has been attacked by an overenthusiastic year 6 with a pen, who spent his last day in primary school getting a bollocking in the head's office. School are offering to pay for it if it's ruined!
I'll give it a go with the Oxy, but I'm not sure they'll believe how much it was... *must look for receipt*
3 limos turned up and took all the year 6's to Pizza Hut. Next year that'll be me forking out for long cars nobody can park...
SiJ - I'm full of admiration for your multi tasking skills with the children
Flossie - Sturminster Newton is a lovely little town
LB - my achilles is much better but I think a 6 hour will set me back or turn it into a full blown injury. I want to be niggle free by my next marathon on 9th August at the IOM as I'm there for a whole week and planning a 100 mile week too which will be great preparation for my autumn marathon schedule starting on 28th Aug (10 marathons in 9 weeks). Hope you can get the stains out of the jacket
Keith - happy birthday in deepest Devon with intermittant internet access
Mr Bump - that's a great video of Lance, I watched it today at lunchtime, he is so inspirational to watch. I thought yesterday's TdeF was great too.
LMH - how exciting that the tickets have arrived, how much time before the event do you travel to Prague?
Parklife - to give you the best shot at the half marathon, can you switch the 20 miler to the weekend after the half marathon race? A half marathon race is roughly equivalent to a 16 mile long run so you could go out later in the day and do a gentle 4 mile recovery run that would be OK too but I would advise switching the schedule around if possible.
PSC - I finally got around to reading your Ironman race repot today, fabulous. And I saw the photo of you finishing with a huge smile on your face, you've lost even more weight since the last time I saw you.
thanks Shades.... was down to 65kgs for race day. I suspect a few have already gone back on since! I also suspect I was grinning like that for the best part of the day. I absolutely loved it.
Shades- 8 marathons in 9 weeks!!!! You are superhuman. I really hope the achilles holds out for you.
LMH- I can't begin to imagine how nervous you must be feeling at the moment. I think i would go to pieces. I hope you are manging to sleep. I am so excited for you.
LB- What day do you go to portugal?
HY4- how is your throat? I feel a bit better today, but i went for a 4 mile run this morning and i was rubbish- had no energy and got very sweaty. I feel really tired now but my swollen glands have gone down.
Keith- Happy birthday 21?
I reckon that the official estimates of the numbers of cases af swine flu are over-estimated because everyone with any kind of viral symptoms will be phoning in and being told they have it. My eldest daughter has had a sore throat and cough all week but i know it isn't flu. I had flu once about 10 years ago and it was the most awful illness i have ever had. The real test is - if there was 500 pounds in an envelope outside your house would you be able to get up and take it. If you had flu then you wouldn't be able to. I know that when i had flu i could only just about crawl to the toilet and i certainly wasn't interested in money as i felt like i was dying.
James- just read back and seen your funny monkey feet shoes- does anyone comment on them when you are out? i am tempted to get a pair as they look really liberating.
I go on Tuesday Si J! I feel exactly the same way as you about the piggy flu and over diagnosis. I think it is very naive of the government to think the new hotline WON'T be abused....
"Hello? I've got a sore throat and I'm tired. Can I have Tamiflu please?"
Those who REALLY have it I feel very sorry for, but it's apparently not as severe as "proper flu" so they may be able to pick your dosh up after all!
I've got a stronger squeak! My chest is still a bit painful. I went out to get the weekly shop before dinner and was worn out by that. Chris did take the shopping in, however there's no way I'd send him to do the shopping by himself because he would spend more money than me.
((((LB))))
Have you gone thru the website thingy they've put up to see if you do need Tamiflu?
LB - I have to say 'why was she wearing an outrageously expensive Calvin Klein jacket to school anyway'? Have to agree totally at about all the idiots who would rather risk the somewhat scary side effects of Tamiflu than getting a mild dose of swine flu.
I leave for Prague on the 5th (cos there were no flights on the 6th) and race on the 8th. Not sure what Czech customs will make of my tub of white powder but as I've never heard of thestuff they're providing for race day I have little choice but to take my own. New bike ordered today - LBS did me a great deal though the manager has more or less dared me to use the new bike for the race and I was always rubbish at chickening out.................if we can get it set up with new aero bars etc I shall give it a go!
If you think you can or you think you can't you're probably right.

A bit better. My chest & throat are still hurting but not as much as yesterday. Glad Flossette's back is easier.

Ouch. It's never good when you can't get the internet access you're usually use to.

PSC - just read your report re IMCH. You're famous!!!
Glad to hear that Flossette is able to soldier on, now take care of yourself too Flossie!
Thanks for clarifying the teaching thing - didn't want to give duff advice to Mr B!
Keith - happy birthday!
Shades - sorry to hear that you're having to DNS again but as you say - not worth the long term loss.
HY4 - speedy recovery.
3.2k swum this morning.
Tickets for Prague have arrived - now I'm getting even more nervous!

Nomnomnomnomnomnom...
