Quimby Thanks for that link it's the best independant review I have seen so far. However I shall live with a 301 for some what longer. The big boxy thing has a big screen for those visually challenged and Im usually drinking tea while it acquires a signal.
I've been playing with the idea of getting a Forerunner 301 for a while, but was just wondering whether I should go for the 305 instead. What do people think - is the GPS coverage that much better?
I've found the 301 for about £160 (or possibly less on eBay), so would like some thoughts and opinions before deciding if the extra £90 would be worthwhile.
Hi Rhys, the 305 has the 'SIRF' GPS receiver fitted which is much better than that in the 301. The 301 can be affected relatively easily by tall buildings, tree cover etc etc and can take a while to get a signal initially. The SIRF system is a vast improvement and can even get a signal when indoors.
If you suspect you may have reception problems with the GPS I would get a 305, if this shouldn't be a problem (i.e. you live and train out in the open) then get a 301...........although if you can afford the extra £90 I would still get a 305 as they are nice and small and look 'normal' compared to the half housebrick 301
Thanks for the advice and the links to the reviews. It would appear that the 305 is quite an improvement, so if I go for either it'll be the 305 as my usual training run does go through some quite wooded areas at the bottom of some hills.
I've looked around at prices and it seems that Red Lion Sports and Sport Tek are the best prices (£249.99 and £251.96). Does anybody have any experience of dealing with these two - from this thread it seems that Sport Tek have a decent reputation but what about Red Lion Sports?
Bad news! Anyone planning to use the Forerunner 205/305 or Edge 205/305 with MemoryMap 2004 will have to upgrade to the 2005 version, as Garmin have added an addition to the Track Protocol data that MM (and possibly other programs)is not compatible with.
Fellrunner maybe you need a wearable solar powered battery charger so that you can keep it topped up whie you run. The cycling guys might like such a device too. Suggest it to Garmin.

They also do free delivery over £50.

Thanks for all the help.
I remember last year when the 301 came out, a company in Europe had them weeks before the UK. Can anyone remember the name?
too poor for the 305 but will wait a couple of years til the price comes down!

I've had 2 happy years with the timex GPS and HRM package, but times move on, and toys get more sexy
Strangely I'm located within a mile of the Romsey HQ for Garmin. Wonder if I pop down would they have any retail facility. Hmmm!

You could try running faster: 60 miles in 10 hours in 6:00 minute/miles ;-)
you need 2 garmins
(goes off to look for an ultra to justify it)
