Helegant, always a pleasure to hear from you, good luck at Brighton.

Redhead, i'll respond to your e-mail after this post.

My apologies to everyone, with my  work commitments and trying to get my London training in , i don't seem to have time to take a closer look at whats going on the thread.

However things should start to get better, my tapering has started with 16.4 miles today and i've knocked off 6 minutes to record a Pb for this one with 3-15-30. No sign of my friend Molly the sheepdog today though.

I've not run for days but just off out now for about an hour. Nothing I do or don't do now will make the slightest bit of difference to Brighton mara. The die is cast - it is what it is.

    Take it easy IW.

Oh I will, don't want any injuries now on top of everything else. My eye problems have been linked to rosacea. I've been assured that it's only in the very initial stages and can be contained fairly successfully if properly handled, although there's no guarantee. The special face cream I have to use is expensive at 21 Euros a tube, and the ointment from the skin specialist is specially made up, expires in two months, so that means a quarterly visit to her  for more. Aging is the pits!  She did a skin cancer scan also and cleared me for that. Couldn't schedule a blood test until next Thursday, so unlikely I will know the result until after Brighton, but my GP has told the lab tech to do a full work-up so that should show up any problems. Not whinging, honest, I'm basically lucky to be very fit and healthy for my age.

IW, you do seem to be "in the wars" at the moment. I do hope that you get back to full fitness in due course. It is great that you are not whinging, as so many youngsters today are whingers, with no reason to whinge.

JJ, thanks for your comments, which are always taken on board. I have just started reading Trail Running, and one of their training tips is to run up and down steps. I have often considered this, and there is an ideal set of steps off of one of my runs. I was wondering what your thoughts on the benefits of this would be.

OT, well done with your 16.4 mile run, and PB to boot.

IW and JJ, i hope you will both be back to the very best of health soon.

I've had a lazy day today, complete rest after yesterdays efforts.

    Morning all,

I'm not going to run today as I have an ouchy bit underneath my left knee just to the right side . I can pinpoint it so I've iced it, ibuprofen gelled it and it's getting 2 days off. It may not even have been caused by running as I've been doing some heavy gardening and scrabbling around on the ground so could have twisted it then. Hopefully Mary Massage Lady will sort it out next week.

Healing vibes to ill and injured peeps.

JJ, I used to do a similar session with work colleagues, running up the inclines of a footbridge over a gyratory system, along the bridge and down the other side. We repeated this for a certain amount of time, and tried to get the most repeats. I don't  have easy access to a multi story car park, but do know of a flight of steps leading off one of my trail routes. I haven't counted the steps, but there are a lot, and I think I will give them a try tomorrow, going up fast and then slowly down, repeating 6 to 8 times.

This afternoon, I ran 8 miles in the forest. The wind was in the opposite direction to usual, meaning that the outward leg was into the wind. I discovered another new trail from the 3 mile turn off, which was fairly even underfoot, but led over a single track road to a very steep downhill, which was deeply rutted and waterlogged. I went as far as possible and then turned back as the going was too boggy. This sort of run is so different from an 8 mile road run and  much more satisfying.,

Red, hope your knee soon gets better. You are very wise to take a couple of rest days.

Dear All - Isn't tapering just awful?   You don't know what to do!!!!!!!!!!   I got up early before work today (5am) and ran a good 9 miler (my last 'long' run before the Brighton Marathon).   In the office today the young German chap who sits opposite me says he has a stinking cold on the way so I've told him not to show up on Monday if he's not a well teddy bear!!!!!!!!!!   Won't be happy if I pick up the 'lurgy' from him!   I'll be getting paranoid in the last week!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let's all try and keep positive!   Easier said than done though!

Very sad to see there was a major fire in my home city (Salisbury) yesterday with serious damage to 2 landmark pubs/restaurants in the Market Square!   I'll view the damage when I'm visiting home in next month!

Rehead, which one are you tapering for. Likewise Im sort of all over the place. V. happy wth Kingston last Sun but dithering about stuff now. Planning the spectator schedule this afternoon, OH is going to film son and I. Trying also to work out how to be spottable among the other thousands. Noticed the Mall on way back from run yesterday so ran up it pretending it was the real thing. Nearly in tears on the pretend one!

    glad JJ youre improving.

Chris, it's Brighton first then London the week after. I always cry in the London marathon as it's just such an emotional charity event.

Tony, last year I ran the Brighton marathon with a sore throat developing. By Tuesday the next week I was in full-blown cold mode but by Saturday it had all but gone. Then I ran the London marathon the next day. How's that for timing! image

Redhead, you are amazing, as always.

JJ and IW - healing vibes.

    Well run all you tapirs!

IW, I too have rosacea (not acne rosacea) and was on antibiotics for a couple of years. Made not a blind bit of difference. If you find any sensible answers, do let me know.

IW - very best wishes for a rapid return to health.

JJ - likewise. And BTW, I did Google "sappho" (remembering to include "rhododendron") and Yes indeed, it has a very pretty flower.

Red - best wishes to your left knee.

Noting that you always cry in the London Marathon, I wonder is that why you took up knitting while running it, -  to have something to dry your eyes on?

Ran to the lake this morning, then ran a pyramid (in minutes, not distances) of 2 fast 2slow, 3 fast 3 slow... etc. up to 5 minutes, then back down again through the numbers, then ran back home. JJ - your advice to Chris, a page or so back, that "short very fast intervals each week until further notice" will improve speed, - would that apply to a pyramid session such as I've just described?

Im going to have a go at proper speedy stuff but not til after now. Its all in the lap of the gods now. Feeling ok. I think Im good for 12  min miles for a while then walk more, then just crawl really. As i said to horrified OH we'll go for a time next time!

Red you are fantastic. Will put you in head with Paula, Eddie Izzard and JJ for when I need incentive to keep going.

Today was dull and windy until I got home after my afternoon session, and then the sun came outimage. I did a running up steps session, as per article in "Trail Running." There were 34 steps and I did 6 runs up and walked down. The steps were not ideal as they were concrete, high and sloped upwards from the back to the front. This meant placing the feet facing downwards whilst going up and upwards whilst going down. Going up was ok, but I had to walk down as it was impossible to run safely.

Is anyone else having problems logging out? I haven't been able to for two days now. I posted on the "Website Bugs" thread, but haven't had any sensible responses.

Hi guys - didn't run tonight (rest day) and am about to tuck into a Pizza Hawaii made by our Sri Lankan neighbour across the street, he makes it with curry and it's delicious. They run a takeaway pizza-curry-schnitzel place and make the best pizza and curry for miles around.

Did a 10 mile run in the forest this afternoon. It was quite warm, but  no sunshine.

I am still unable to log out, don't know why. The web bug thread has been no help.

Sometimes you can solve this problem by clearing the browsing history on your PC.

Thanks Helegant, I will try that.

I'm afraid it didn't work. I hope that the Admin will eventually respond to my post on the web bug thread.

    Evening all,

Still not running as pesky knee is sore as can be. I hate tapering! At least I can have a glass or 2 of wine this evening without worrying about the consequences tomorrow image

Hi Helegant. Are you ready for Brighton?

TE, we've had glorious weather here today and very warm again. I'm jealous of your run.
