It's not flat, there's an uphill section on castle st which isn't too steep, a sharp and short up hill at Claremont and another uphill section in kings land.
I have just emailed the organisers about the route through the Quarry Park. I worry that the eventual route will mean running up and down the same path the whole length of the park three times. Surely the route will have been accurately measured by now so they must be able to publicise it. I ran the rest of the route the other week and its quite tough for an urban half/full marathon, so I don't think there will be many pb's. Still its a beautiful town in a beautiful county, but there again i'm bias being a Shrewsbury boy!! Just hope the organisers get it right!!!
Last 9 mile run done this morning, significantly faster than my target marathon pace of 9:40-10 min miling so now all depends how things go next week. I may still try and get down after work for a little stroll around the route. How's the tapering going ?
I did 10 steady today. Felt tough but I feel pretty well prepared. I share concerns about the Quarry but I hope that the HM won`t be too much of a factor; if I`m looking for 3.50 - 4.00 then I shouldn`t be lapped by too many HMers should I?
1:40 on the bike Saturday, 40mins aerobic training in the gym. Some physio, achillies feeling as good as it has for several months, which is to say crap
Glad everyone seems to be going well.
Yeah the HM could be a bit of a pain, all those stragglers to pass for ages. Hopefully theres plenty of room, nothing worse than having to chop and change to get round people.
Forecast is 12-17C which isn't too bad at all, some rain and 12mph wind
And the seats / stools in Loggerheads are so comfortable, aren`t they!? Not! Love the place but I don`t think I`ll be fit to negotiate such an uncomfortable boozer. Hope to grab a pint at Salopian!
Ok folks so my pack has arrived, and as an out of towner driving down from Mold at silly o clock in the morning, I'm a bit nervous about that narrow window of shuttle buses. Staring at 730 from the New Meadow and then advising be one before 0800 to get to the start . Can any locals advise of better parking within a mile or so or up to 30 min wal from the start ?
I`m sure someone will help rob. We`re in a nearby hotel but I`d imagine parking near to the footbridge that goes into the Quarry from the Frankwell / Welsh Bridge area will be possible. You going down to try this week?
Yes I may go down Thursday evening after work, thanks Yer-maj I'll have a look at that area on google map, I don't know thetown that well. But just done some research the car oak at Frankwell main ? Sy3 8rd looks a good bet 700 spaces , and looks like £2 all day Sunday - what do local s think . Ta muchly. Tis getting close now. 2 more easy runs to go
Change of plan. Most likely drive down for a test run on Wednesday as I'm further away Thursday . Think I'll try and find Frankwell main Carpark , and have a little jog about 6 pm or so
Hi guys & girls. This is my home town so know it well.
Frankwell car park is best option if you are on that side of town or abbey Foregate car park if on other side of town, but please leave a space for me !
well i went and did one lap tonight. ANd i can confirm hills, in town and accross the river bit, but what goes up must come down , and theres some flat
A pleaseent evening's bimble - stroll-jog and being adopted by 4 lady runners near the bridge , when i'd stopped to look at my various maps, which then did in fact help us accross the far side of the rivver. Yes Frankwell Carpark looks the one for me - nicely big and prob a 15min -30 stroll to the quarry (park).- and i think its £2all day sunday.
as its taper week and time for worries - my hay fever which i thought id grown out of came back this eveing with runny nose and itchy eyes need a fast acting nasal spray i think . Happy tapering folks
see you sunday - im aiming for around 4hr30 depending on hills --- blue Buckley runners vest c ROB on front, probably my Welsh Dragon cap

Does anyone know if you can enter on the day? I am doing Trail Marathon Wales the day before and if that goes ok I might do Shrewsbury.

I most certainly did not
Pack arrived today, now looking forward to it.Strange place for an after party though! Great pub as it is though! Bit small I'd a thought
I hadn't read the bit about The Loggerheads - I've not been there since I was about 16
The Loggerheads was my teenage local!
Mine too...in the late 1980's!
You two can relive your youth!!
our paths might've crossed!
Heh - I was at the 6th form college from 1987-1989 so they may well have done
And the seats / stools in Loggerheads are so comfortable, aren`t they!? Not! Love the place but I don`t think I`ll be fit to negotiate such an uncomfortable boozer. Hope to grab a pint at Salopian!

Head for Copthorne - no residents parking and you can walk down Porthill Road to the Quarry in 20 minutes easily

Route map from a google search from Shrewsbury Council here:
http://shropshire.gov.uk/news/2013/06/residents-and-visitors-encouraged-to-support-shrewsbury%E2%80%99s-first-marathon/shrewsbury-marathon-route-and-parking/
and there is a link on the council site to this map: http://www.mapmyrun.com/gb/shrewsbury-eng/shrewsbury-marathon-1-route-200570074 which is different to the route previously listed and linked on the official site... unless i'm doing something wrong...?
Looks different to me, none of those nasty switch backs in the quarry which is a good thing.
Weather looking good for running, hopefully not too much rain (hurts my nips)
Wow that is a big difference! For those that know the city is it a good change? How much cobbles will there be?
Weather says 14 degrees and wet on BBC . .
And yes, it does look like a better course now!
Thanks Ross I'll try an go look/ jog the route tonight~ the benefit of a 4 lap course, I ll be able to see a lot in a mile jog
Much better route through the quarry there are no cobbles on route
