Actually Max, due to a clerical error (and nothing to do with Pingu gossiping and not paying attention) there's only 143 in your age group, so you only have to beat 138 of them. Simples

For those not aware, main accomodation is at the Ibis, there is a thread with instructions somewhere, with details to contact ISB by email (assuming there wasnt a cut-off for group booking rooms).
For some reason I can no longer do quotes so here's the deal on the hotels! I'll give ISB a nudge next time I talk to hime for an update on the hotel situation!

MC, I was wondering about that, I asked a guy at work who's done a lot of mountain rides and he said maybe do that or at least go from a 10 speed to 11 at the back, but I don't know if this is possible with the set up I have.
mine is a compact though rather than a proper double so that should help a bit.
i've done zero riding beyond the south downs and Bala once, so can't really visualise what this will be like at all!
If you've already got a compact chainset, then you might be better just putting a 'longer' cassette on....
The triple conversion is adding up.... new chainrings and cranks, new BB (longer), also its Octalink (rather than tapered square), so need new tools, not 100% sure yet if existing 105 shifters will support a triple, so may need a new shifter along the way... and may need new derailleur on front, and poss even a long cage rear!!!!!
Not experienced enough to know what the score is in converting to an 11 speed, but would guess a new chain, and poss new shifter.... those who know what they are talking about will offer advice worth while listening too!
lets be honest.... its all prep for an Ironman on my 100th birthday
Sounds about right, remember last time on the longer climb reaching the sign that said 5k to the top, thought, excellent, nearly over, then checked my current speed, 6mph, so that'll be 30 minutes more climbing then
You should easily get away with a compact, I've got round Lanza and Wales with mine. A lot simpler than a triple and you've pretty much the same gear range.
I am sticking with my standard set up will just stick a slighty easier cassete on the back its got me round Wales and tough sportives like the Dragon and the Cornish Tor with no problems there is a bike course vid on you tube it mainly looks like looooong steady climbs so stacks of hilly bike routes in training for me anyway isnt the run flat as a witches it so it should be a doddle
Yes I have ridden climbs in the alps alpe Duez and Mount Ventoux I have a Compact and a 11-27 on the back. I have never struggled as someone mentioned most French climbs are very very long not steep compact defo gets my vote over triple.

Nothing ... but its a way of funding my habit, plonker
272 in my age group wish all these old wankers would piss off with their mid life crisis so i can nab a Kona slot
You've only got to beat 267 of them, possibly less, how hard can it be?

You dont even have to beat 138, just those that turn up at the rolldown.
I think the best plan is to get your rolldown Euro's out the ATM then superglue the other ATM card slots
It's alright Max, you can discount another off that age group list! I don't remember ticking the qualifing box!
and if that fails, at least you've got beer money for the awards do
Oh bugger.
i seem seem to have an email from IM France saying something about an entry to something next year?
Entered, I look forward to seeing you all in Nice if not before.
Good news Dermot! I'll keep an eye out for you on the plane this time!!

have just spent an hour studying the bike profile.....
....and have ordered the bits to convert my standard double set up to a triple....

Should say north downs / Surrey hills not South Downs.

Cheers. that does sounds a bit costly! Not prepared to throw that much of my new bike away; I've only had it about a month!
I would have thought a compact with an 11-27 on the rear would be fine? The hills aren't that steep -just long.

RBM - are you riding the stealth?
I did a week in the alps earlier this year and survived on a 53/39 with a 28 large on the back. Gave me more than enough gears.
if you have a compact then stick a 28 on the back and you'll be fine. Will cost you about £30.
Clearly some climbers here.... .... i'm reporting from the Fens and get altitude sickness if I ride over a speed bump....
My bike came with a compact and a 12-25. Having neither money nor skill to change the set up that's what's taken me around Lanzarote and Wales.
GB - i will be, primarily because its significantly lighter than my road bike
